The Year of the Blue Squirrel: AT 200
The Leskean Alliance, find that the only other inhabitants of their island are the small tribe living by the Bay of Karhui. Their expeditions found not only a pink berry which was harvested in small quantities, but also some small rodent-like creatures, these have reddish colored fur and long tails, the length of their own bodies who could climb trees with greater ease than they could run along the ground and who were observed to eat not only these new pink berries but both nuts and bird eggs as well as chasing off rats which infested the camp, these creatures indeed looked useful. Having assumed that since these berries were eaten by the creatures that they were edible, many warriors ate them and fell ill, those who recovered, sadly less than 30%, didn't regaiin their full fitness for a further period of 10 days. However, when news reached the doctors of the city, several came to see what effects the berries had, one such woman believed that were the berry to be brewed its effects may be better controlled and, upon doing this, she found that, in a small dose it would dull a patients awareness, in stronger doeses it could send them to sleep, and in the strongest dose - equivalent to eating several berries raw - it would cause severe vomiting and cause muscles to relax, meaning it could be a powerful antidote - or poison. Back in the city of Terykghua, the greatest architects gathered to design a grand temple, built from the finest stone from the area where the Iris River rose.
The Alesians began to use stone to build their buildings, however, there was little stone of good quality which to use and in some cases it had to be transported several leagues from a quarry, thus the process was expensive and generally only the public buildings were rebuilt. Most settlements had fewer than 5,000 permanent residents and so there was generally but one temple and an inn. The search for copper was fruitful when a group of adventurers stumbled across a long disused quarry to the south, however there was no tin found. Parties who ventured into the hills rarely returned, and a few survivors who emerged raved about red eyes in the darkness and people ten foot tall who rode giant chickens into battle - but they generally weren't believed.
Of the six expeditions sent out to establish colonies, four were not heard from again - all in the region of the hills into which many of the seekers of tin were beginning to avoid, whether impetuous youths or seasoned men. Altogether, these expeditions contained almost 10,000 people, a quater of the Alesian population at the time. The town set up on the lakeshore began building and imroving upon the design of rafts with which to cross the great expanse, these used for the moment to catch fish while training men for the long voyage. The group of horses found settled in well to new paddocks enclosed by wooden fences, although these were unlikely to hold a desperate horse. The horses were given extra feed to the grasses but were also made to pull loads attached by ropes in order to strengthen them, and, after several generations it appeared that they were in fact strong enough to carry a light man, yet few were brave enough to attempt it, and none were succesful in their attempts. Attempts to create bows were however successful and 200 of the recruits whose eyesight was sharpest and whose aim was best were trained to become archers.
With their rapidly expanding population, the Avernite people sent out several expeditions to found settlements, however, especially further from Avernum proper, a few of these settlements elected their own leaders and formed armed forces, rebelling against Avernite rule. Diplomats sent to nearby tribes still failed to convince the people to join Avernum, as did those people who attempted to spread the word in secret, for these were closely kint communities, unwilling to betray their families and friends - especially after Avernum had used its muscle to claim lands formerly held by free tribes. Using tin found in the regions around the new settlement of Tinraya, bronze was forged after many attempts to find the best mixture, and the metalsmiths of Tinraya kept the secret closely guarded to ensure the continued need for their trade. Searches for other metals around Tinraya found lead, although in small quantities and it was unsure what this new metal would be used for. Also in the hills, a long haired and shaggy creature was found, and was, according to those rich enough to purchase it, or adventurous enough to hunt it, delicious:
Attempts to build galleys failed as these attempts generally sailed too low or were liable to capsize with little effort on the part of the weather, thus when the attacks came, the planned assault by troops from the sea was unable to be brought to fruition. A force sent with settlers to Fort Duvno had rebelled and these soldiers too were unavailable, thus when the attack came, there was the initial assault which drove into the centre and quickly took the small village whose residents had mostly fled, and, with no forces from the North or South to distract them, the Avernite army faced the entire might of the combined armies, who through weight of numbers defeated the Avernites and chased them back across the river, though their casualties were high. They sent a message with one of the captives telling the Avernite people that they wished to live in peace, but if that were not possible, they were perfectly willing to fight to defend their lands and their families.
Avernite Losses: 100 men
Losses to the Combined Armies: 250 men
The Khaumasu managed to convince the surrounding tribes to join their growing empire, and planted several fruit farms for them to harvest, as had been agreed. Their new Emperor, Kuataim IV issued a decree to the extent that stone deposits were off-limits so as to reduce counterfeiting the stone currency in use, however, this did little to prevent the hardcore crooks who had no respect for rules in any case. Construction was begun on four new cities, and people were encouraged to move their and breed to take advantage of this new space, however, the jungles did not produce an abundance of food, and the tropical diseases took their toll on the small population, which meant that little growth was experienced.
The Sage of Mitsara, Drehagan, had died, and was suceeded by Merages, who assumed the title First Successor of the Sage. The grey creatures - eliphants - were captured and tamed by a group of the elite Guards of the Sage led by a commander named Metricocles, nephew to Merages, First Successor to the Sage. These men were rightfully rewarded. Copper deposits were mined and forged into weapons, and the army was grown further, taking control of the lands abandoned by the fearful tribes, and further Blood Temples and Altars were built throughout the Empire.
The Kiatian army recruited 500 new warriors, Hattakans who were painted in black and white powder, and 250 new scouts were sent in all directions bringing back reports of largely uninhabited lands, but to the south, there were reports of a few settlements of a large size. Lots of work was put into agriculture, with large irrigation systems built into the fields, but also into the city to provide fresh water. The domesticated cattle were selectively bred for strength which enabled them to pull a stone 'plow', and they also provided a tasty snack for the Kiatians. Temples were built in the city, which also doubled as centres of learning where people could be taught the knowledge accumulated, and a second city was built upriver, the two small tribes having fled north and west respectfully after threats from the Kiatian army.
The Tourijan scoured the surrounding mountains for metals, but the climate and terrain is harsh and the search was hard going, however deposits of copper were found and worked to produce weaponry. Stonemasons were encourgaed to be inventive and manipulate stone in various ways, and arches became popular in Tourijan architecture. Attempts were made to develop better boats, but when using overlapping planks in order to increase the size of a boat, the planks could not be joined together firmly enough and so they fell apart soon into the voyage. Searches for large domesticable animals revealed wild pig-like animals dwelling in the lower valleys amongst the small trees, and these were captured and brought back to the capital, but the need for fodder and the lack of numbers of these animals drove the price of this meat high. Following the style of road-building developed last century, roads were built through the mountains to connect the cities of Aluji and Kaffa to Tourijan. An offensive against the tribe called Kerch, who had declined the invitation to join the Tourijan Empire, was recalled by a soldier of the campaign:
Jiano said:
We arrived after weeks hard march through the mountainous passes of our homelands to reach an outcrop overlooking the river, here we could see the villages of Kerch and we built fortifications. They did not attack, for they knew that while we were safe behind our defences we would remain unbeaten, yet several of our groups who went foraging never returned, and it was the common belief that they had been ambushed. As we found out later though, there was worse to fear than the tribes of Kerch...
In the marshlands to the East of Kerch, a force of Varjiliti disappeared, never reaching their intended target. The Varjiliti were reformed with the next generation of recruits, but the mystery remained unsolved until a second expedition proceeded more cautiously, and three survivors came raving about men sinking into solid ground in the middle of the night and fires all around. The fort on the Sacred River was built by settlers who travelled south of these treacherous marshes.
In Daruk, the streets were pebbled and large temples and markets were built. With the development of the wheel, chariots were introduced into the army, and the expanded military went North to conquer some of the tribes, while barracks and fortifications were built at the border with Ferusia.
The Sabhanese simply went about their business as normal, but an embassy from the Kiate'yans were annoyed when they realised the leaders would not see them and left this message before returning North.
Kiate'yan ambassador to the Sabhanese said:
We would very much like to set up trade with you, our people have access to many goods from the mainland of which we doubt you have knowledge. We greet our southern neighbours like long lost brothers.
OOC:
GN, the creatures are squirrel like, but omniverous (i think im right saying squirrels are herbivorous) and bigger than our squirrels so that they can indeed take on rats

Give them a nice name for me, I quite like them.
Xen - Tinraya can't be shown by a cross since its population is simply too small, as time goes on or as you build things there or due to strategic location, population will exand a city but if you dont have enough people you cant get a city

Tbh, capitals are simply shown as crosses because they are capitals, they generally dont have ennough population yet to be that big. Oh, and what is your government? I don't think you included it on the template.
Das - awww, wheres your nice stories of fire and blood, I felt sure you would have some great ones with your dark nation.
JTK: Sorry your update is so short. More depth stories/orders give me more to work with, plus I wanted to get the update done and up asap.
All: Random events will begin now you have got your tribes settled down, and the further you expand, the more NPCs will be met, I more or less know where they all are, and I cant wait till you find my favourites. Nice stories all who've written

Next update will be as soon as I get all orders, but since it's christmas on Saturday I'm more than willing to wait a fortnight if I dont have them all. If anyone is going away, please say

And remember, better to do your orders immediately after an update than to miss the next one.
