The Year of the Jolly Fat Man: AT 300

The Alesians, feeling a little down due to the fear of the chicken riders all became happy when they woke up one morning to find presents of beautiful jewellery left by a mysterious stranger, and were even happier when news of the victory to the south was retold around fires on the cold winter night, for, Ortorix had equipped his warriors with copper weapons and suits of armour, creating many Chosen Swordsmen, and too, with the horses bred for generations now strong enough to carry warriors, many of these horsemen were formed and practiced anti-infantry tactics. Festivals had been thrown, and the king with his armies had marched south towards where the sightings of chicken riders were, and when in the hills, having been ambushed he fought a battle, surrounded by hundreds of chicken warriors and many infantry, the colonists took up weapons unused for ages and fought side by side with the regulars, but it was impossible to see the evasive enemy and slowly they were pushed back, Ortorix, leaping upon the back of a riderless horse, having never ridden before, rallied the Alesian forces and they pressed forwards into the dark, and through strength of will fought on till dawn broke and the enemy fled back into the deepest hills where none would venture, and there was a great celebration and a city founded with walls built high, and although many brave men had died, the King rode forth in triumph and upon returning to the capital the largest festival ever was thrown and the people welcomed back their King, their saviour.

Compared to this, the rest of what happened in Alesia was boring, for basic roads were built using stone from quarries scattered lightly over the Empire, and deposits of tin were found near to the newly founded city, and, towards the end of the era, an emissary was sent from the Chicken Riders, and, within sight of the Alerian border, he strung his bow and fired an arrow with their messge wrapped around into the large gates to be taken down and delivered to the capital.

Condis Inius said:
Alesian King,

You have proven yourself a worthy foe, and have defeaed a tribe who have never previously been defeated in even a minor skirmish. We are rational people, we wish to know why you invade our lands and found your cities in the hills which we have roamed since before time, these hills are not fertile, nor are they easy to travel, there is much land which is more easily habitable, but this land is in our blood, why do you come and defile the hills upon which the glory of our fathers was enacted?

The Mitsarans began training their eliphants for war, and it was decided that they made a formidable force. Their troops were equipped with copper weapons, and they began using bows and arrows in fighting, expanding their army enormously. Sacrificing continued in large numbers, the blood flowing in many directions. Cities were founded in conquered lands to control the surrounding people, many of whom were no longer of pure Mitsaran blood, but as they expanded, they came across another nation who used eliphants in war, and whose army was too large for the scattered parties who encountered them to attack, but their cities appeared advanced to those who saw them and their warriors were well trained. To the south another great nation was met, although these had no eliphants, they too looked well trained but their armies looked as though they had not seen battle, even though they were well trained and the people looked soft and easily plunderable.

The Leskean Alliance began trading with the Liuk Tribes, in an attempt to force the tribe into dependency upon the Leskeans, they also sent in Preists of Pul to teach the Truth of Pul, and these were accepted as honored guests by the tribes. A small outpost, Telruaghua was built on the border between the lands, orignally its intent was to guard the border, but it also became a focus for trade which flowed freely. The upper classes were forced to become educated and to take responsibilities, which led to a class of philosophers who, although having differing ideals, agreed that they must make life better for all Leskeans. The Oiresh berries became used widely in medecin, saving many from previously deadly diseases, but no military use - save as a poison - was found. Some Kuirahks were captivated, and, although the first generation remained untame, their offspring, when separated from their parents were easily tamed, and used to kill rats which pillaged food and spread disease.

The Kiatians bred cattle for strength - in order to pull plows better, but this meant that there was less meat, and thus reduced their utility, massive wooden structures were built to hold the cattle in the countryside, creating a system of ranches spreading out, but there was the problem of bringing in enough water through the farmland which dominated both sides of the river. However, they didnt simply forget that the Earth provided for them, and began a system of re-seeding forest which were cut down. Then too, they sent their militaries to attack the two small tribes which had been fleeing along the river, and, having easily defeated the primative tribesmen, plundered the villages and raped the women, however, as the turn of the century drew closer, the people were filled with goodwill by a jolly fat man who went around the country singing songs of love and peace. Exploring parties also brought back a metal they called 'copper', found to the south.

Kuataim's spectacle was recieved well, and, after several executions, people came forward telling that they knew of someone who was counterfeiting money, and although these were not always true - but luckily the guard were honest and only executed those who they could prove to have counterfeited - many counterfeiters confessed and swore the oath so that they were not accused. Kuataim did many other things to increase his own glory, for he set up infirmaries in each city, and the money invested in medecines meant that many were saved who may have died from the diseases which infested the jungles. On the coast, experiments were begun into creating a vessel with which to sail across the seas, and though simple rafts were good enough on the sluggish river, they were ill-suited to the ocean and so many attempts were made using different designs and trees, and eventually, a large canoe was developped which could carry many people or lots of cargoe and was safe to sail in.

Daruk fortified the border with Ferusia, who, the scouts reported had, upon seeing that Daruk was no longer concerned with them, turned their attentions North and conquered most of the land North of the new forts. Half of the army had been sent into the highlands, and mines were established to mine the copper, tin and silver found in the hills, not too far from Daruk itself. These metals were brought back, and used, with weapons of copper being made, jewellery from the silver, and the tin was used to create crude mirrors.

Avernum, after lengthy negotiations brought the rebel cities back into their nation. The new 'yaks' found were easily domesticated and yaksmilk quickly became recognised thoughout the Empire as delicious and yak bollocks were considered a delicacy. Avernum - the city - was also given a make over - the streets were paved with beautiful stone, large walls were built, trees and parks planted, and all this inspired a new generation of artists who painted the views from the walls, the sweeping walkways. Hawkers crying their wares, the ring of a smiths hammer and the playing of street musicians all added colour to Avernum which became a thriving city with people flocking from the provinces back to Avernum. Boats to sail the river were created, long barges to carry cargo, and narrow canoes to swiftly carry men, and small galleys were built, able to sail the seas. Truly, this was a great time Avernum. The founding of some of the cities planned was unable to be completed, for these places were already settled, to the south, cities with towering spires were sighted - obviously the work of sophisticated people. However, not all was cultured, the Avernum people increased the size of their army, and a new, elite division - Dervishes - were created. With these troops, they invaded the neighbouring tribes, and with two forces, managed to rout the forces sent against them in the open, however, the tribes withdrew behind their walled cities, which were more easily defended.

The Tourijan began building stone academies for the purpose of research, and due to the need for written communication, a basic writing system formed, with a rune like structure, carved in bark or stone, or clay tablets. From these centres, came the idea to create terraces on the mountainside to more easily grow crops, and so this was begun on a small scale around the cities. Selective breeding was carried out on pigs to create better yields. However, an expedition to found a fort further along the river made contat=ct with the Ytrescun peoples, who inhabited the lands and appeared moderately advanced. This also meant that the intended client state could not be founded and Tourijan was stuck still in the mountainous homelands. An expedition was sent....cautiously....into the swamp, however, all they found was that when burnt the materials gave off a most awful smell, and that there were no creatures taller than a mans knee, since a light creature was more likely to survive in the swamps, but in particular, they were enthralled by a small bird which hopped over the surface eating worms, but was not scared of the men, follwoing them by day and hopping around the camp at night. In the south, a few men were sent to bring back the furs of various animals found down there, and several animals were found - although some reports were vague, and some not to be trusted, - it appeared that many animals nhabited the tundra, mostly with either white pelts, or those who lived in the temperate forests, with brown pelts, one brought back stretched 7 feet and had very sharp claws, its reputation made firmly when it was revealed it had killed 4 men before being brought down.

OOC:

NK - how do you want to 'domesticate tubers and nuts' ? Surely you can only domesticate animals.

Das - will put up government bonuses tomorrow, forgot i hadnt doen them.

WarlordMatt - I liked the story tbh, orders were brief but very much liked the story.

All - It costs a lot to recruit troops, some people would have been spending more money than they had, I have been kind this time, from now on, Economy will suffer. Prices aren't always constant, and this reflects real life, there is shortages of labor, food, materials, so prices fluctuate so I can't give exact price, you just have to guess really, or Ask an Advisor how many he estimates you can recruit for example and I can tell you numbers.

The map....note, I havent finalised the colors for NPCs and I will put their stats on the front when I sort out oclors tomorrow.

Yays! :D

To Chicken Riders

We were seeking the metals in the hills and in the mountains beyond. We had no idea you were nothing more than brigands (attacking lightly-armed colonists and terrorizing them didn't help your situation). HAd we known you were a nation, we would have sent diplomacy, asking for peace! We are sorry!

I love it! :D

And for the record, Chosen Swordsmen are equipped with the latest, i.e. copper (hopefully soon-to-be bronze. )

OOC: What the...?

Where was all the expansion that was planned? All the attempts at making a coherent Empire, instead of a wide collection of citystates? Seriously, I've seen no real expansion for the past few turns, and PLUS, WHERE ARE ALL MY CITIES!? I ordered at least four city forts to be built in the southwest, and not a one was built, not a single explanation for that?

Whaddya mean I can't domesticate tubers and nuts? Plants are like the essential thing to domesticate. Basically, all domestication requires is humans taking home the seeds of the plants they like better, then planting them, taking the seeds from the best plants, planting them, so they get only the best plants in the end...

In short, I'm rather disappointed in having so many orders not carried out. I see other nations constantly expanding, should I just put in my orders, found cities left and right, I don't care where?

To Barbarain Tribes (Not teh Chicken Riders)

We have defeated this mighty band of Chicken Warriors! Surely O Nobles of the Wood, this proves to you that your lands shall flourish as part of our grand nation?

OCC: Only one gripe, which is the fact it said in the update that my forces found the fishing villages and burned them to the ground, but does not show any actual expansion of my territory. Otherwise, :goodjob:

EDIT: NVM on the piggies

Try increasing hygiene to make our empire the healthiest on the planet, try doing everything we can to make our people’s lives longer and better quality, increasing the overall population and workforce.

As per map, expand in the pure orange areas as much as possible. These are reasonable goals, I think. Integrate the new city of Kerch into the empire fully. Found a new fort farther down the river, the orange spot.

Found a new supply depot (a “port”) in the south and then make a road from it to three new forts. The northernmost is to be near the swamp, the southernmost is to be on the coast, the middle will be... well, in the middle. This will secure our border and make it much easier to annex the tundra-land.

^These are orders that I never saw done, for reference.

Avernum

The realm was boomin- expansion, trade, exploration, technology, and military victories- and to top it all of, notonly was Avernum very close to untiteing the two Avernite nation- Avernum proper, and the allied Avernite tribes across the river, but to the south, a new nation was discovered! And rumors persisted that thier were yet more- some across a the Eastern desert and foot hills, the other down river, along the the River Tinraya- north of Fort Formello- but both of these were just rumors- at least until explorers could verify thier existence...

For Now, Avernum was content on maing contact with the people to the south, and to finally unite the twin avernite nations, an dall the remainign avernite hill tribes, who cliamed no real territory for themselves; as well as exploring, and making new settlements- yes, that was an important one- Avernum was a growing nation, and a fiarlly large one- its territory however, was a hodge podge of setteled territory, and unsettled territory- thier had to be a stop to that, some order put onto the confusion, and a well standing set of borders; besides, while Avernum had all the resources it needed, for the moment, it wouldnt hurt to get more supplies of them, along with any other materials worht finding- Averum looked to lake Priapus, the many hill chians, e great mountians to the south- and to the Sea of Thralni for these new resources... and ofcourse, that new nation to the south- who knows what wonders it might hold!

It was such that the mapping came quicklly from the senate- expiditions would be launched, conquests planned and executed, the people rallied, and the celibrations made- Avernum would begin a new set of settlments- not unusual at all, but with a gran dpurpose in mind- to fill in the stratetgics gaps between settlements, explore new lands- and establish firm border forts- that were to function as trade settlements as well- along the nation to the south, at a natural junction where the River Elysi fed into the mighty River Avernos.

Av_expansion4.png

- the most major fo the new settlements would be Delis, a city proposed during the last chain of expansion forts, and a second fort, Zyphir- to be founded on a site sacred to the Avernite religion, it was to be a good city when completed- a fortress, market, temple, and public forum were to mark that town as a special one
-these two fortress' were made to both protect from, and impress the people to the south- not to mention, act as a primary link, and check point for any merchants who would travel along the river.

-Ovidipur was ot be founded on the far shor of lake Priapus- a fine lack, with many fish, and much abundant wildlife around it, it was mainly to act as a fort to secure the lake, and thus the river Villia, which fed into the river Avernos, near the very capital, but also as a fort to base further exploration- as avernites had a might hunger for the tales of dareing adventurers, fighting brigands and barbarians, slatying strange beasts and monsters, and generally having a jolly time of it.

-Toria was to be a new port on the Sea of Thralni- the sea was a misterious thing, but Avernites were workign up thier confidence, and thier sea farign skills were now quite well- the Senate and Primarch both agreed that founding more ports at relitivlly average distances would pay off in the long run- Toria- as well as ovidipur for that matter were both on the very cusp of explored lands- but thier founding would be sure to help pave the way for more exploration.

-by contrast ot he above, the forts of Euamon, Iona, and Lennus were all fairlly boring- founded in well explored and traversed lands, they were vey exiting to soldires or adventurers, but the areas were attractive places to live, in quite safe, being traversed so frequentlly anyway, these cictes woudl help to bind the empire together, in a good solid whole, and offer more central places for resources to be farmed or mined, gathered stored, traded, or worked into finished goods.

while those were the only major settlments beign founded, the senate was still to persure a vigours policy of lands claiming to further aide the binding of the empire- Avernum was on a good track, and th epeople were happy- but everyone agreed, that what was good today, could be even better tomorrow.

NK -

tubers and nuts can easily be carried home and planeted, taking the best specimens is selective breeding not domestication which is making wild animals tame, thats why i got confused, i let them take nuts and tubers home because people can do that.

OK, Im sorry to have missed those forts on the tundra, I saw them on the mpa but not in your orders so was unsure what you meant, I will add them in now for you.

increasing hygiene - you need to sya how or I cant really do it, do u build sewers, do u introduce laws to stop people throwing garbage into the street / rivers, do you bring fresh running water into the city to allow people to wash, what? thats why that wasn't done.

the forst further down the river:

Espirito said:

And as for your actual 'land' the 'orange area' that only expands as population grows, or, if you build an outpost or something which can keep control of an area, the orange area is the area where people farm or live in small villages and recognise your authority, outside this it is basically just a wilderness - no one lives, it doesnt mean that your cities are nto connected.

Sorry if you feel I let you down, but those are the reasons, and I admit that I didnt k=notice the forts, but everythign else would have been the same for anyone else who gave those orders.

Oh, Contempt: You did found a new city, the fishing village, can't remember what you called it, on the coast, it is hard to see because of the color.

Thanks to those who liked the update.

The Year of the Jolly Fat Man: AT 300

Uh... rrrright...

I name that river controlled by the purple people "Daga Mahavan", or simply Mahavan River.

IC:

- Conquest!
- Conquest!
- Conquest!

- Conquest we:
- Seek.
- Achieve.
- Admire.

- With strength:
- We fight.
- We rule.
- We conquer.

- For Aramon:
- We live.
- We fight.
- We conquer.

- HOLY WAR!
- HOLY WAR!
- HOLY WAR!

---

The huge army marched. It moved as a single body, and was shouting various religious Aramonist maxims and hymns. It was a gigantic army of more then a thousand men, followed by the gigantic gray beasts with trunks.

It marched, and it seemed as if there was no end of it. Through the quiet hills, the army marched, and the sound of that march and of many hundreds of voices disrupted the silence.

The army was marching north. This was to be the test of Mitsaran strength.

---

"And Merages, the First Successor to the Sage, did order that, in the Glory of Aramon, another thousand of troops be trained in the Way of the Warriors and that twenty kers, with three men riding each, be added to the Gdasava. And the army did become huge, so huge that not even Merages could easily command it.

And so Merages, the First Successor to the Sage, did order that, in the Glory of Aramon, the army be divided into the ten ctasavad, and the ctasavad be divided into a hundred ptisavad. And the commanders of ptisavad were to follow orders of the commanders of their ctasava, and the commanders of ctasavad were to follow orders of Merages, the commander of the gdasava, and Merages was to only follow the orders of Aramon.

And then was the Gdasava ready to march against the Northern Heathens."
- The Black Book.

---

"O, Successor to the Sage! O, Lord Merages!" - exclaimed the humble messanger.

"What is it?" - asked Merages, clad in his golden armor and calm and wise and... terrifying.

"The scouts have found the great river to the north."

"The Tall River?"

"Indeed, o Lord Merages!"

"Good. Tell my generals to prepare the army for a forced march. We must take the war to the Heathens."

Orders:
- Continue building Blood Temples and Blood Altars, in futile hopes that the Great Mod will notice that and increase our religion's culture.
- Use slave workforce to build many impressive buildings, temples, palaces, etc. Also try and build some sort of roads between our cities. Before the Northern Expedition (see below) begins, connect our primary land with the enclaves via our military brutally stamping out all those who resist for the sake of getting into shape.
- Continue converting and assimilating all those who are not Mitsarians. Those who do not convert/assimilate will be enslaved. Those who resist will be captured and sacrificed in a particularily gruesome maner.
- Conscript, via our religious fervor (ever-growing), another 1,000 men. 500 of them are archers, 450 are warriors, 50 are Guards.
- Create a small force of twenty war elephants. Essentially, nothing fancy here - no armor, but a howdah (the thing on an elephant's back) and a crew of three men - one rider and two archers.
- Reequip our warriors with assorted copper weapons.
- Once all of the above three actions are finished, begin throughly preparing for the campaign. Make sure that we always have enough supplies, that our troops are well-trained (and, importantly, fanatical). Reorganize most of our army (not counting 100 warriors, 100 archers left to guard our territory, backed by militias if needed). Our "Huge Army" ("gdasava") will be divided into the Guards of the Sage (obvious enough. Under Merages' immediate command), the "kersava" (the elephants...) and the rest of the army which will be, in turn, divided into ten organizational subunits equal to each other. Call those the "ctasava". Each of those will, in turn, be divided into ten organizational subsubunits equal to each other - the "ptisava". This will create a clear military hierarchy, allowing for more efficient control over the army. Oh, and note - each ptisava and ctasava will have both archers and warriors in it.
- Finally, once we are ready, the entire gdasava, led by Merages himself, will march out north, to the Daga Mahavan and the "purpleland". Have our scouts find a fairly safe crossing (as far as crossings go. Ofcourse, its of utmost importance to make sure that the enemy does not have large enough an army to prevent us crossing the river. Better yet if no enemy is encountered during the crossing at all. If we do encounter the enemy, cross with a relatively small force at first (but not smaller then the enemy patrol encountered), and try to kill the enemies with use of insane, berserk, zealotic charges. If the enemy manages to escape, he still is supposed to think that this is our entire army).
- After we have crossed the river, we are to advance carefully into the enemy land. Send out scouts to explore the terrain around us, and to prevent the enemy from outmaneuvering us - without us finding it out, anyway. Once we do find out that the enemy is prepared to strike us in the rear/flank, play along, expose ourselves to the enemy attack, and when the enemy attacks, the central part of our warriors and archers that they will crush into will fall back... alowing the left and right flanks to trap the enemy attackers. Then reorganize our forces and slaughter the foe. Against enemy elephants, have our troops throw torches at them to drive them crazy or at least to keep them in bay. As we march on, allow villagers to convert. You should know the routine by now. If we find an enemy city/town/fortress, leave a small amount of troops (one or two ptisavad) to besiege it, but pretend to leave a large part of our army there (via building a huge camp). If the enemy tries to lift the siege, defend the positions there fanatically, forcing the enemy to either fall back, either suffer unexpectedly high casualties. Advance thusly until we encounter a major enemy force.
- Once we do encounter it, force it to give battle. A force of three entire ctasavad will tie down the enemy forces, charging into the enemy infantry and trying to hold position there fanatically, without retreating. Use torches against enemy elephants. Two other ctasavad will tie down potential enemy flank attacks. The remaining ctasavad will be used as a general reserve. At some point, Merages and the Guard of the Sage will move in to reinforce the central ctasavad, preventing it from faltering, raising morale and concentrating the enemy attention there. Meanwhile, our kersava (the elephants), divided into two equal groups, will outmaneuver the enemy flanking forces and attack the rears of those enemy forces on the two flanks. This will allow the kersavad and our flank ctasavad to attack the flanks of the enemy force in the center. If the battle begins to go wrong... Fight on. Fanatically fight on, slaughter as many enemies as we could and do not retreat. Persist the enemy, break his spirit and make him fall back, and make it so that even if the enemy wins... it will be a pyrrhic victory.

And btw, if I liked that update, do I get a bonus? ;)
