You're deaf, colour-blind and partially-sighted? That has really got to suck.
When people are yelling at you it can be nice for it to fall on deaf ears

Walmart is popular, and physical copies in general are quite popular. Paradox is popular, and Impulse is a bit less so. Amazon.com is very popular.
So again, why would they limit to just one outlet? I've nothing against those who are happy with the DRM attached to steam, but I am not okay with it personally, and much prefer to buy from a more honest and compliant vendor.
Steam servers are molasses slow, their support department sucks, they usually mangle software that is distributed through them so that it doesn't work with mods and patches released for that software natively, they're slow to post patches for software that they distribute, just to name a few of the more egregious short comings that steam foists upon its customers.
It looked like from the Firaxis page that steam was going to be their exclusive distro channel. The only one who benefits from that decision is steam.
I know that this is a modmod forum, but I was sad, and having played a bit of this wonderful creation, was hoping someone knew something that might give hope that civ5 isn't exclusively shackled to steam.

Many games come with Steam as a compulsory part of it (or "integral to the gameplay" as 2K would have us believe)? Really? How many can you name?

Given that 25 million gamers are using Steamworks, I would say quite a few games use it.
Then again, I like the idea that I can play any of my games from any computer in the house simply because the game is tied to the account, not the computer.
Some notable games using Steamworks:
Napoleon: Total War
Just Cause 2
Supreme Commander 2
Empire: Total War
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II
Braid
Zeno Clash
America's Army 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Team Fortress
Half Life 2
Portal
Some upcoming games using Steamworks
Fallout: Las Vegas
Kane and Lynch 2
Civilization V
Ruse
Plus, since Civilization V is using achievements, it kinda needs Steamworks anyway.
Civilization V though is competing with a lot of games I want this Fall such as Elemental: War of Magic (also aimed to be highly moddable), Mafia 2, Postal 3, Patrician IV, and maybe even Starcraft 2. Vicky 2 is coming out also.
You haven't named a single name where Steam is compulsory to play the game, as you suggested, not just as a distribution option.
whether Steam is mandatory or not is a matter of perspective. the companies say it is but some people think otherwise. i've noticed that there are quite many people who play Left 4 Dead 2 without the "mandatory" steam, you know...So the discussion about AND and CIV 5 has now become an unviable option for me. I won't be playing CIV 5 unless they Drop the "mandatory" use of Steam. So I won't be playing RoM and AND with CIV 5 either.
if you don't like steam or other nasty & intrusive game components just remove them. the internet offers enough options to do so of which most are legal as long as you posses a original copy of the game.
the same will be true for Civ5: i estimate 1-2 weeks after release there will be some kind of no-steam crack as it happened for every other steam game so far.
