Stop the Presses!

You're deaf, colour-blind and partially-sighted? That has really got to suck.

When people are yelling at you it can be nice for it to fall on deaf ears ;)

Wow, I am saddened to see that Civ5 is going to be exclusively a steam game. There are so many other better distribution channels, why limit your game to one with such ugly DRM as steam?

Walmart is popular, and physical copies in general are quite popular. Paradox is popular, and Impulse is a bit less so. Amazon.com is very popular.

So again, why would they limit to just one outlet? I've nothing against those who are happy with the DRM attached to steam, but I am not okay with it personally, and much prefer to buy from a more honest and compliant vendor.

Steam servers are molasses slow, their support department sucks, they usually mangle software that is distributed through them so that it doesn't work with mods and patches released for that software natively, they're slow to post patches for software that they distribute, just to name a few of the more egregious short comings that steam foists upon its customers.

It looked like from the Firaxis page that steam was going to be their exclusive distro channel. The only one who benefits from that decision is steam.

I know that this is a modmod forum, but I was sad, and having played a bit of this wonderful creation, was hoping someone knew something that might give hope that civ5 isn't exclusively shackled to steam.

It's not exculsive to Steam, just you have to use Steam to activate it. You will be able to buy it in shops.

1. You can buy physical copies.

2. It only requires Steam to start up. You could easily set it to offline mod.

3. Compared to Steam, every other digital distributor of just games is small.

*sigh*

You can buy it at more than one outlet but no matter what, the game has Steamworks built into it like many games for PC do now and days.

(I like numbering).

1. Their servers are more than decent.

2. I've bought a dozen games over Steam with many such as Hearts of Iron and Crysis working with mods. I simply have to put them in a different place.

3. Slow to post patches? Again, I've patched games the very day or at worst, the day after a patch comes out. Given that when a patch does come out, most mods don't work for the game, I honestly wouldn't mind if there was a wait.

It looked like from the Firaxis page that steam was going to be their exclusive distro channel. The only one who benefits from that decision is steam.

Except for those who don't want to waste time getting hard copies from a store when I could simply spend a half-hour downloading the game from home. Then again, since the Steam isn't the only distro channel, I think you just fail at reading comprehension.

Many games come with Steam as a compulsory part of it (or "integral to the gameplay" as 2K would have us believe)? Really? How many can you name?

Modern Warfare 2 requires Steam, likely due to the popularity of its multiplayer and need to stop cheaters (which is really a joke since there are way too many hackers for the trouble of having to activate it though Steam).

As for Civ5, it is too early for me to form an opinion about it.

I concur. 1 or 2 online games. I don't play online games.

If I have to d/l Steam then CIV 5 will NOT be on my computer, Period!

There are several new 4X Space games coming out around the time of CIV 5. Guess I'll be playing them instead. :nuke:

Given that 25 million gamers are using Steamworks, I would say quite a few games use it.

Then again, I like the idea that I can play any of my games from any computer in the house simply because the game is tied to the account, not the computer.

Some notable games using Steamworks:

Napoleon: Total War
Just Cause 2
Supreme Commander 2
Empire: Total War
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II
Braid
Zeno Clash
America's Army 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Team Fortress
Half Life 2
Portal

Some upcoming games using Steamworks

Fallout: Las Vegas
Kane and Lynch 2
Civilization V
Ruse

Plus, since Civilization V is using achievements, it kinda needs Steamworks anyway.

Civilization V though is competing with a lot of games I want this Fall such as Elemental: War of Magic (also aimed to be highly moddable), Mafia 2, Postal 3, Patrician IV, and maybe even Starcraft 2. Vicky 2 is coming out also.

Dude its new vegas not las vegas

Sonereal, no one is disputing that there are plenty of games on Steam, and please stop quoting those 25 million people. Hundreds of millions of people smoke multiple times each day, but that is not a recommendation!

You said this: the game has Steamworks built into it like many games for PC do now and days.
I replied with: Many games come with Steam as a compulsory part of it (or "integral to the gameplay" as 2K would have us believe)? Really? How many can you name?

You haven't named a single name where Steam is compulsory to play the game, as you suggested, not just as a distribution option.

Every one of those steamworks games, it's not just a distribution option, it's exactly as integral as XBox Live or Playstation Network: online matchmaking, cross game friends, achievements, etc. Maybe you don't think those features are important, but what makes steam compulsory for these games, including civ V.

https://partner.steamgames.com/documentation/api
has some info on the boring bits of code they could use from steam and actually write more game code we care about playing.

I will not let Steam on any of my computers. I personally seen what Steam can do to a PC and it's internet connection. I work for an ISP provider and have seen 1st hand how a product like Steam can take over a persons PC and trash it. The customer who uses Steam and has a lower level PC will notice that it doesn't take long before their internet connection becomes agonizingly slow. Why? Because Steam is as intrusive as Microsoft. But doesn't yet have a watchdog looking over it's corporate shoulders.

So the discussion about AND and CIV 5 has now become an unviable option for me. I won't be playing CIV 5 unless they Drop the "mandatory" use of Steam. So I won't be playing RoM and AND with CIV 5 either.

I guess I need to learn how to Mod CIV IV and the current RoM & AND.

Really sad and mad about Firaxis' and 2K's bad decision.

whether Steam is mandatory or not is a matter of perspective. the companies say it is but some people think otherwise. i've noticed that there are quite many people who play Left 4 Dead 2 without the "mandatory" steam, you know...

Is Left 4 Dead 2 a FPS or Online game? I don't know because that type of game Does Not interest me at all. Nor is that game associated with CIV.

I've played CIV for close to 15 years. I bought every version that has come out. I've supported Sid Meier's efforts till now. I feel betrayed. Just like I would if they changed CIV IV into a RTS instead of the TBS it is.

@sonereal,
Damn!, you are certainly repetitive! You've posted the same post in multiple threads all over this forum. And it Still doesn't make it anymore True or Convincing. ;P

It's funny how no one mentions the hundreds of millions of gamers who don't use Steam or the long, long list of games that don't include Steamworks. Then again, just like there's no persuading you, JosEPh, there's no persuading Steam fanboys otherwise :)

Bah... DLCs destroyed Fallout 3 modding - they got running only after Bethseda stopped with DLC madness (and their DLC were mostly very stupid) - I know because Fallout series, including Fallout3, is one of my favourite games. DLC are nothing but money-making machine... and that never can be good for game.
But I am more worried with constant pushing of steam, on-line playing and on-line accounts. When I pay for my game, I DON'T WANT TO BE FORCED TO GO ONLINE, I don't want to be bothered with steam or anything similar... Damn it, if I want steam, I will install it, but I don't like to be forced... More and more games new games are forcing us to have internet connection, to use online services. Yes, it does have it advantages, but it has many disadvantages, and I don't like they simply choose to force people to use steam. They are literally punishing people who legally buy game and play - and those with not-so-legal copies will always find workaround.

if you don't like steam or other nasty & intrusive game components just remove them. the internet offers enough options to do so of which most are legal as long as you posses a original copy of the game.

the same will be true for Civ5: i estimate 1-2 weeks after release there will be some kind of no-steam crack as it happened for every other steam game so far.

So I should discard my morales to play CIV V cracked? Where's that NoNo smilie hiding? Ah here it is! :nono:
