Strategy Discussion and Guides

My starting strategy with Spain on monarch
Settle Lisboa first(i know it will flip, but it's still good for science and a few units and only want coastal cities in Iberia and without Madrid I won't get horses) and Santander.
Raze Marseille and Bordeaux and conquer all Italy with the starting units and mercenaries
Get a great spy and steal guilds and engineering from Portugal(very cheap!)
Conquer Cordoba and spread islam to build cool wonders(you can also steal tech from moors with just courthouse and 10%)

I don't know why but i started with 4 free crossbowman, which made the conquer very easy.
And by the tech steal you will be the tech leader and could build MANY wonders, and then all is easy

Why'd you settle Lisbon? Other cities can provide science and units too and will last a little bit longer. I agree, it's a great city, but I'd just take it from Portugal after the tech stealing.

I like your tech stealing strategy. Reminds me I should experiment with that more often.

If I only settle Santander i won't have horses for knights, I dont like Madrid because its better to have coastal cities, so i use the other settler for Lisbon and then horses. you can get units for your army or whatever in Lisbon fast by whipping.
The first time i tried the tech steal i got philosophy, guilds, engineering, compass, optics, gunpowder and drama from moors and portugal with just 1 great spy and espionage at 20%
and it was a bad gameplay

You sure that comes from the python file. I searched and I didn't find and that looks like the one I saw in the uncompiled DLL.
Stability is done completely in Python (except some display stuff). Forget the stuff in the DLL.

I know the DLL was an abandoned project because it didn't work properly. What I meant is the two functions you gave me as inklings seem to pertain to the DLL. I didn't find them in the python file for stability. Or perhaps you changed the naming and organization in the latest SVN. I have the last one. I shall update soon but I have a game to finish before updating. :)

If you can't find them, you're probably not on a revision where the stability changes apply.

How do we ensure the third UHV goal for Spain ? What exactly counts as Europe for this goal ? In my last game both Sweden and Prussia were protestant at 1700. Prussia is unavoidable as they spawn at that date. But would I have won if I could convert Sweden ? I got the 40% Catholicism spread goal.

No civ with Protestant state religion may control a city in Europe.

It does.

The funny thing is, till 1700 AD I saw the marker ticked green to show no protestant civilization in Europe, even though Sweden was protestant. That was the reason I did not launch a religious war against them. I guess that may be a fluke. I'll upload the save from that game. And an earlier game of Japan that I was supposed to upload but couldn't find my pendrive :( .

While I managed to get the Chinese territory goal through vassalization, there are again super cities in this game. This time aliens landed on Tiwanaku :crazyeye:

Ibid for Spain. Note the green tick for for the Europe goal. Not sure if that is deliberate or if Sweden does not count.

Well right now I'm playing carthage. The conquest of Iberia and Italy felt like the easy part ( note since this is my first time with Carthage, I am playing with Viceroy ) but the gold goal is what's difficult. I could barely get up to 240 gold in turn 368 . How do I get 15000 gold by turn 468 ? ( playing in Marathon. I wanted to check how it works ) .

great merchants. you need to send them to large distant cities and do a trade mission. just 3 or 4 will get you enough.

About that, is it different to vanilla BTS? Because in BTS, the real factors in getting large heaps of trade mission gold are:

1) You capital capacity to generate strong trade routes
2) Target city capacity to get strong trade routes.

Basically densely populated cities with a lot of multipliers like intercontinental factor, ToA, lighthouse (for RFC for some reason instead of harbor), etc.

In the regular BTS, distance is irrelevant. But I suspect that was changed because that's a historical mod.

So do I beeline for currency ? I'm currently building the Great lighthouse in Sur. I've already got the Great Cothon. I'm planning to send the first GM to India or Persia. Targetting the holy cities. Does the Great Cothon give a GM ?

No, distance still doesn't matter. But maybe it should.
