Strategy Discussion and Guides

I'm sort of dead set on starting on the 1700 scenario because Britain starts off with so much power its just too tempting not to try some great military misadventure :P . thing is, its a challenge, because your economy is bleeding and if you don't conquer the two Indian religious cities you don't get a gold income enough to give you a tech lead, then other European nations can outpace you. Especially Netherlands. On the other hand, in the 1700 AD scenario, this Britain somehow hasn't even discovered Australia yet O.o . So you'll have to try everything to take it all before the Dutch get their hands on it. What I usually try to do is, first go all out and conquer India, no vassalization. Then once India is taken, Persia usually caves right after and Thailand too. After that conquest is done, I move on to mop up the Portuguese and Dutch colonies in India and Africa. In addition to warring against the French with my troops in the Americas at the same time I'm conquering india. The French are pathetic defenders of their colonies and I take it all before they can do anything. But the flip side of this rush conquest is instability. In one marathon game I was collapsing by the time I had taken all of India and the French holdings in America.

Anyone have a good 1700 AD Version 1.11 America Strategy?

I assume UHV? I recently won on on Epic, though w/a slightly modified version 1.11, but perhaps what worked for me will work for you.

Can definitely be done:
- Spend (almost) all starting gold to rush workers and spam cottages everywhere (I even put them on hills), except for Denver/New Orleans/Washington, my production cities. Later use gold liberally to build levees and other necessary infrastructure.
- Switch to Free Market, and Occupation if on Normal (later Universal Suffrage once cottages start maturing).
- Conquer Toronto w/grenadiers
- Found the Denver on oil, Chicago between corns, any reasonable city in central Canada, and Spokane on western Silver (later add Los Angeles and Seattle). The important thing is to grab as much of that sweet land as possible with minimal overlap.
- Techs: Assembly Line/Industrialism (for conquests), and also Combustion/Mass Media (for wonder/oil goal). Anything else is nice but probably not needed (well, Artillery might be useful).

Should be possible but may involve luck:
- Obtain New Orleans via Congress
- Conquer London and Edinburgh with force of grenadiers/cannons -- scout with your frigate to check first. In my game there was only 2 redcoats (maybe I was lucky?)... conquering these two will collapse the UK, making the Monroe Doctrine goal and tech race much easier. If not, things will be more difficult but should still be possible; just make sure to crush all of their N. American cities.

UHV goals:
I didn't seem to have problems with wonders in my game. No one built the Statue of Liberty for a long time for some reason, but you should probably aim for it ASAP (trade for copper if needed). For the rest, you should be close to being tech leader and have super production so shouldn't have a problem.

For the Monroe Doctrine goal, wait until around at least Assembly Line or Industrialism/Artillery before making your move on Mexico -- lopsided victories will make them easier to capitulate. The islands are annoying but should be lightly defended and also easy to take. You have until 1930; just tech and prepare troops until you're ready.

For oil, there are 5 easy ones inside your empire (Canada, Denver, Texas, Alaska, Mexico). Outside, there are 3 easy independents that have oil: Bergen (Norway), Sukadana (Indonesia), Masqat (Arabia). If you conquered Britain, their oil will also be yours. The rest of the oils you can get in a variety of ways: attack Columbia/Brazil, attack Lagos (esp. if Portugal has collapsed), anything really... hell, storm North Africa or invade the Middle East if you want; your tech and army should be ahead enough to do so. I actually got my 10th oil by voluntarily vassalizing Poland, who had conquered the Balkans oil city.

What's the best way to deal with the Mughal spawn as India ? I'm playing a Non-UHV game with India. Should I accept to flip for 10 turns and then take back the cities ? Or should I just challenge them and refuse to flip.

Depends on the size of your millitary

Either way, a large enough army with bombards and muskets would be able to deal with the mughal spawn. the question is which way is *better*. Which gives me fewer losses and the cities aren't as badly damaged so I can expand and improve later on.

I think the ten turns later is better so you can develop more armies

How to play Azteks? F*!ng spain attak me at 1280-1300. How defense? Or prevent they landing.1

Send a lot of boats because if they see them and meet you BEFORE They see your land, they won't get any military

You are also very unlucky. Normally, the conquerors appear much later, so you have more time to prepare.

If you start another game, you are very likely to face them later.

Phoenecians:

1. Found Sur/Gebal(1N) and Kition(Cyprus copper), capital build axemen (hurry by gold every 2 turns), Kition build settler.

2. Starting army go conquer Egypt. Build horse pasture.

3. Load an axemen to conquer Greek city with only 1 warrior defender.

4. Build chariots to finish Greeks hoplites and defend against barb vulture.

5. buy an army of axemen and conquer Jerusalem ASAP, before Persia spawn.

6. 3rd settler and several workers go found Carthage.

7. Oracle for currency, research horseback ridings.

8. Buy an army to kill Romans.

9. Play at will!

Any strategy suggestion on British second UHV goal? I got the first with no problem, even captured the Hindu shrine while my trading company event triggered so i got + gold per sec on 90% science (australia cities did bleeded me out..) and around 300g, but i noticed that in 1700 when i got the first i had 6-7 frigates out of 25 and i sank 17/50 ships mainly becouse i DoW Vikings in the begining when i had carvels and they had trierimes/galleys, just to get it going. I think its nearly impossible to get 25 frigates in time becouse London and Edinburgh get ones in 2 turns with Navial dominance, and even if i get it i cant amass 25 while sinking ships, becouse usually i m unlucky even against galleons...I have a decent tech lead, france is the only one who follows me, but they dont have much colonies and frigates even tho they are second in score idk how:lol:

Any suggestions how i can get the other 33 ships and the frigates?

difficulity is Viceroy/Normal/3000bc start

Build caravels and upgrade them to frigates. About sinking ships, I usually build several privateers and send them around the world, mostly to South-Asia and Africa to sink those poor malinese, indonesian, japanese, and mughal triremes and galleys. They themselves will bring you 15-20 sunk ships.

Early Privateers do a great job indeed. Hunting Barbarian Privateers could work too. In the southwestern tip of England I created a fortress, so you have a place to attack unit and hide from heavier ships again in the same turn. Destroying improvements and hunting for work boats increases your kill count too.

I usually dont have the gold to upg the carvels and yea when i started that was the first thing that came to my mind but as the game proceeded i saw that i cant upg like 15 carvels.Even tho i found protestantism and gained like 1700-1800gold or more..

Also the privateers, i m gonna try that but i have to get them very early becouse now in the 1700s its hard to get one to mali or indochina, where there are many ships and usually they get sunk after they go in the atlantic. And the production in my african cities is rly slow to get ones there, the asian one can get 2 or 3 maybe but only 2 are coastal, still gonna try it again with a mix of everything - privateers carvels and frigates, and maybe try to get a 3rd shrine the catolic one from AP or the mekka one (arabs still havent collapsed in my game and were very strong) and try to buy ships to speed up things.

England is hard  atleast this goal and mantaining good techlead without going broke

Seriously, England is one of the most powerful civs out there. The more you play, the more you feel it.

I'm thinking of a 'peaceful' England game. Where we don't conquer overseas colonies and colonial is limited to Just Australia and Canada. The objective being a space race or a diplo victory. Or anything. I just want to see the power that England's land and Canada + Australia provide.

Tacky strat I read here: Gift weak boats and then dow. But it works! :-)
