Succession Game for Newbies

Ummm Othniel this is off topic but I hate your "Free Religion" avatar could you change it?

Umm, ok. :confused:

Not sure why you don't like it nor was I making a statement when I picked it--it just looked a little more unique then the other generic choices.

Anyhow, I was intending to change it. I don't think you can get a custom avatar until you have a post count of 75 or more, which I just hit.

ok, back on topic. :)

I'm glad we got the Iron and Horses. :thumbsup: I like the idea of not connecting up the Iron yet, mass producing some warriors, and then doing a mass upgrade to swordsmen. :mischief: Anyone with me on that?

Also, since the Vikings now have writing, I'm even more for us researching Philo next and taking Republic as the free tech. It just minimizes any risk of us losing the slingshot.

There. Avatar has been changed at Kumquat's request. :) Not sure if it's permanent, but it'll do.

:lol: Sorry about being rude like that...I just hate that horrible avatar :lol: We should not risk losing phil so go with Republic.

No HyCrest, I see. Good job on your turns Tad, looks like we are going in a good direction. Othniel, do we want Paris to oscillate from size 5 to 7, with the seven coming the same turn as the settler or 4 to 6? I don't think I have ever really seen a true 4 turner in action, so I'm not sure. I guess HyCrest is on the clock now:( , I believe the SG etiquette is he has 24 hours to respond, otherwise we skip back to me.

lurker's comment: If Paris hits seven, the granary will be emptied.

yeah I think we should start building horses 2 cause then we will mass upgrade 2 knight after we take aztec & vikings.. I think the viks are on a penensula cause they have only been settleing forward :D thats a good thing, more cities for us 2 capture :D

Actually, this is not the case if you produce a settler (or worker) the same turn that you grow to size 7. I think the game checks the builds before it switches over the food box level, at least that has been my experience. My own recent solo game verifies this for me as I'm running the factory from size 5-7.

So yes, to answer your question, Overseer, we do want to oscillate from pop
5-7. Were you able to open up the spreadsheet that I posted and if so, did it make sense? I know Tad said he had trouble with it. :hmm:

I tend to agree with the horse builds. Swordsman are a higher value, but because we are playing a 60% continents map, there is a lot of land to cover. I like the idea of building horseman, stockpiling gold, and then have mass knights. :hammer:

In fact, we might even toy with the idea of stopping research once we get chivalry, or at most research to cavalry and then stop research.

EDIT:
Yeah, if HyCrest doesn't check-in by tomorrow evening, I say go ahead and play, Overseer. Go rock 'em. ;)

One more thing: I haven't looked at the save yet, but I don't think that the last needed plains tile was irrigated around Paris. We need that irrigated if the settler factory is going to work. Please let me know if you have more questions on the factory. :)

No worries, man. :) It kinda WAS a horrible avatar. :lol: :p

Agreed on the philo thing.

Looks like you guys are moving along.

Prior comment was not intended for this post as I'm wrapped up in several games at the same time and I got my wires crossed.

lurker's comment: I stand corrected, then. I know that the game checks for growth before shields and I just assumed that it would go ahead and empty the granary at the growth phase.

Again, this is just a reminder that we're a team and need to make decisions as a whole. I think we should discuss with the team before making decisions on these things, (if not other things also):

1. Government change
2. Researching a new tech (this is important)
3. Trading away a tech monopoly
4. Declaring a premeditated war (As opposed to being DOW'ed by the AI)
5. Use of MGL or science leader, if we're so lucky to get one
6. Wonder builds
7. Any major overall strategy shift

Am I missing other big ones???

lurker's comment:

You could add:

Issuing 'boot' orders;

Planting spies;

Espionage activities;

Making alliances;

Giving ROP's;

Signing MPP's;

Making peace deal (when at war);

You guys are very prolific when it comes to posting. And the posts are not quick hits. I'll try and make my way through all that has hit the wall since we finally decided on a start and give the save a play today.

With an upgrade cost of 120g each, that's going to require a huge stockpile of gold.
I guess we will just have to build/capture leo's Workshop then :D :evil:

Since we are playing contenents I think we should atleast go 2 industrial cause we will have to transport our armys 2 conquor the other contenents :( so we will have 2 atleast get galeons and get 3 (I think) filled armys not 4 :( thats gana be a problem

I was thinking about this later, and I think you were partially correct. :)

When the city builds a settler on the same turn that it grows to size 7, it keeps the food box half filled. I tested this again last night to make sure.

However, I'm pretty sure (although not tested) that if you are building a worker that the city goes back to size 6 with an empty food box. I think that was a game feature that changed either in C3C or in a patch. It was changed to prevent the old size 6-size 7 worker factory where your food box never emptied, letting you build a permanent string of workers.

Yeah eather way the world is going 2 be pink :) :evil:

---Off topic--- Like my new avatar? :D

Is your economy up to the task?

I do think so. I don't even think that Leo's will be necessary and in fact would probably be a huge waste. If we capture Leo's. that's another story. ;)

But, we'll be going to Republic, which should be good for our economy, although we'll have to manage our unit support cost by building large numbers of corrupt cities (that we can then use to make wealth and taxmen).

Also, I intend for us to turn off research at a number of places, and certainly to turn off research sometime in the Middle Ages because that is all we'll need to do. Yes, that might delay the upgrades a few turns, but that might be the breaks. I'm also suspecting that we won't have that many horses to upgrade (unfortunately).

Sorry to disagree with you Tad, honestly :), but I think that going to the IA will be completely unnecessary. I say that because we will at most need to use cavalry to defeat the AI. We may get armies on our home continents to use, but we can do one of two things: either fill the army with only one unit ( I don't anticipate us getting caravels, either, but maybe...) OR just have elites hopefully make armies on the other continents OR just don't use armies away from the home continent. They're not essential on Regent, just nice to have.

Good to still have you with us. :) Yep, we've been spamming this thread a lot, me especially. :mischief:

---Off topic--- Like my new avatar? :D

Yes, but since our team is into changing each other's personalized settings :), maybe you want to change the vomit smilies in your sig? The vomit smilie is rather grotesque. :faint: ;)
