Summer Jobs

My last summer job was in 1964

-Job: Bricklayer's Assistant
-Pay: $1.75 per hour
-Hours: 8 hours a day/6 days a week/starts 6:30 a.m.
-What you do: Mix mortar, saw bricks, move brick and block, drive truck
-Requirements: Upper body strength a plus
-Best Part: Outdoors; could be an entry to a trade
-Worst Part: Can be very, very hard physically

-Job: Bagger at Whole Foods Market
-Pay: $8/hr
-Hours: 20-25/week. On a particular day, anywhere in the range of 7:30 to 10:30 (usually later in the day, though) for up to 8 hours of paid time
-What you do: Bag groceries, retrieve carts from parking lot, return shopping baskets, a few other odd jobs
-Requirements: A certain amount of sociability/courteousness and obedience, ability to lift/move somewhat heavy things
-Best Part: Mostly very laid-back, casual atmosphere. And obviously, the money.
-Worst Part: It is often quite tedious, tiring, and boring.

Once I become a cashier on Monday, my pay will be $8.50/hr, my hours will be 30-35 a week, and my responsibilities will be scanning items, calling people over the intercom, knowing how to use those register computers, cleaning the conveyor belts, and occasionally bagging when needed.

I would like to get a job at Publix as a bag-boy. They do hire from age 14 right? :D
Wow, finally someone knows what Publix is ;)

Georgia doesent have Publix, they have "Kroger", which is basically their Publix.

Naples, home of the old, retired, rich people.

Cool, Melbourne here. So...Florida's the only place that has Publix?

Turns out its not.

Back on-topic: Is $5.00 ~ $6.00/hour working good?

Depends on the cost of living. You'll starve in the city, but if you live out in the middle of nowhere you'll do alright as a student.

No-minimum wage in FL is $6.15/hour ... I'm not sure if Publix hires 14 year olds or not, you'd have to consult the manager ... but you'd probably end up getting paid minimum wage, possibly $0.15 more at best.

My last one was for 6.75/hour at Mervyn's. The bad thing was my mom just took all my paychecks from me and deposited it into a joint account where she could monitor it.

That's 3rd world country wage, I wouldn't work for twice that. It would have to be 3 times as much.

    You're too used to Scandinavian socialism I think. This is America and he's 14 going into unskilled labor.

Then my advice to you Ansar, is not to work at all until you're older and can get a better job, because is 5-6 $/h really worth your time? Work for an hour and you can afford a big mac meal and some candy?

And yes, I am aware of American prices, they're slightly lower than in Scandinavian countries, but only slightly. I do live in America for 2/3 of the year so I know.

remember, most of that time would be spent around the house saying "I'm bored"

half the reason I took my summer job is to have something to do. Even [civ4] can only last so long. Get a paycheck along the way? Great!

It also looks good as a sign of responsibility for colleges and future employers.

Also just stash that cash away into a savings account. When it comes time to get a vehicle, you'll be ahead of everyone else, maybe not have to take out that big of a loan. Or think of college, books for one semester can easily reach $300. You're helping yourself, and your local economy by getting a job.

Eh, maybe next year. Im too addicted to civ this year. :p

Thanks for all the advice, everyone.:)

Spent about half a week at my job for the summer. I am a Field Organizer for the Tom Suozzi for Governor campaign in New York. Until I get some volunteers to help out, I also do phone banking (can't do canvassing due to physical limitations, but volunteers are for that as well) in addition to data entry duties to record the results of the phone bankings and canvassings, circulating the petitions to get Suozzi on the ballot for the primary in September, as well as organizing events (such as when Suozzi comes to the office for the Grand Opening).

Going to spend over 70 hours a week at this job, mostly 7 days a week. The pay is $500 per week (underpaid for the time spent, but this is a good opportunity for myself). Also, have been given a laptop for my use and a desk is on its way in the office.
