There are a couple of threads already posted here for rpg games being played via IRC/Forums (play-by-post/pbp).

I thought it would be alright to start a generalized thread regarding this hobby, including: game design, gameplay, starting PbP games and other ways to let the inner geek show.

That being said, I'll start off the thread by expressing my interest in starting/playing a pbp game. I'm thinking that the system used should be free/OGL, so we all have access to the rules at all times. I also think the system should be relatively rules lite, something simple enough to not drive away potential players (I myself being new to the hobby).

Some system suggestions:

Risus
Mini_Six (D6 "Lite")
Open D6
Microlite20
FUDGE
GURPS Lite

Some settings I'm willing to play:

- Post-Apocalypse (Fallout maybe)
- Skynet post-apocalypse (Terminator)
- Fantasy (Elder Scrolls maybe)
- Pulp adventure (Indiana Jones, The Mummy, etc)
- Spy/Espionage
- Zombies!! (L4D rpg?)
- Police/Detective (including organized crime, mafia, FBI, military, etc)
- Wild West (or Weird West...)
- Stitchpunk (think the movie "9," we'd be playing as those dolls)
- Borderlands
- Others (open to any suggestions :) )

I'm a fan of GURPS, but never got into a group.

I believe they have a 2-pager version of GURPS lite as well.

I think if you could edit out all of the fluff and explanations for novices, you could condense the rules to a couple pages. Like most manuals, a lot of it is spell lists and advantages/perk stuff (bells and whistles).

I've never been in a group for anything, but the D6 system is "open" now so you can legally download alot of the "core" books for free, and IMO is much simpler to get into.

I'm in FC's Risus game and in NK's DnD game. They're pretty fun. I think I've about hit my limit though, but I do welcome people playing more games! :)

I would too. I wanted to join in on fc's Risus game, but I'm not a fan of steampunk or avatar... I have no way to relate to the setting (as it was in the beginning, dunno if it has evolved at all since...)

I'm just biding my time, customizing the D6 system for use in a Fallout/Post-Apoc setting(s).

I'm almost done making a streamlined version of D6 for use in a modern/post-apoc setting if anyone wants to get something going.

I'm also working on making a version of D6 for use in a South Park RPG, anyone interested in that?

I'm prepping the start of a 4E D&D game on IRC for anyone that could show up twice a week, maybe less maybe more, based around the standard 9pm EST. Already have 2-3 confirmed players, would be willing to accept new guys. Come on #nes if you want to ask me about it.

Twice a week is a bit too much. When I started playing a few months ago in real life I was really eager and annoyed that my group wanted to play once every two weeks only, but after a few months I know we would burn out if we played more than that. Maybe that's just what happens once you're out of college? hehe.

What day of the week would you play and for how long?

Well it's doesn't tire you out when you don't actually have to meet the people. :p Probably Wednesday and Saturdays after 9PM EST, dependent mostly on what time zone the majority of players are in, for atleast 2.5-3 hours. You can't get much done in less time.
