Team CFC: Folding@Home project

:hatsoff: to you million points guys.

Well, it's been 4 months since I stopped folding but I just downloaded and installed the new client (6.2).
I hope to see results soon.

I have a quick question:

The folding@home viewer does not work on my computer (the one that pops up when you right-click and go to "display")
-How do I solve this problem?
-Is the viewer necessary for the program to function correctly?
-What does the viewer do?

This is a known bug, that they are working on.
The viewer is unnecessary for the program to function properly.
If you want to know your progress just browse over the icon in the traybar or open the log file.

And it's looking good for me, already at 8% after 1,5 hour.

Stop thinking of it as a "Problem". In modern management-consultancy-speak, it's an "Insoluble Opportunity" :)

Well done, Sahkuhnder :goodjob: 3 million points and counting :D

@IglooDude: Have you got that quad core system folding yet? I expected to be eating your dust by now. They've just started delivering units for project 2662 - 1920 points in 14 hours on the SMP client, so that's boosting my points rate a bit.

On the bad news front, it appears TeamCFC is losing active folders. We're down to 24 :( Let's hope it's a temporary dip for the vacation season.

Yeah, I've seen you ramping up some. :goodjob:

It's been a massively frustrating experience for me. I spent damn near a full day on it, to no avail. A couple weeks later (one of the weeks at a class away from the quadder), I wiped it down and reinstalled the OS. Before I reinstalled the client I tried installing it on a different non-production Vista box. No joy. Sometime this week I'll try getting the client running on the quadder again, but if it doesn't fire up at that point, it'll become just another single-core-folder box in my stable. :(

Thanks :goodjob:

And 8% per 1.5 hours? I only get 2% per hour :(.

Percent per hour means very little unless you say what it's a percentage of.

2%/hour of a 500-point work unit is 10 points per hour. That's worth more than than 8% per 1.5 hours of a 100-point unit, which is about 5 points per hour.

Measure your points per hour, or points per day. However, the bad news is that your scores don't seem to be contributing to TeamCFC! You are at the bottom of this list, with zero points, so it looks as though there's something wrong with your setup.

Wait, work units are not all the same .

I am getting about 100 points per hour. I am currently at 300/5000. Is that good?

As for why my work units are not contributing...I think it may be because I closed the program before I got any points into my first work unit.

You should be able to see the project number for your current unit somewhere in the user interface. Look that number up in this list. The Credit column tells you what each work unit for that project is worth when you submit it.

I'm running the SMP (symmetrical multi-processor) client on a fast four-core system. I currently seem to get a mixture of #2605 and #2662 units. These fold at about 5% per hour and 7.5% per hour respectively, and deliver about 90 points per hour and 130 points per hour. So your 100 points per hour is excellent. What hardware and client are you running?

I have the regular client and I am using a laptop with a Pentium dual-core processor.

EDIT: How do you tell which work unit is currently being worked on?

If it's doing 100 points per hour you are doing very well!

Sorry, I don't know where to look for the project number in your UI, as I don't run that client ... or Windows! There should be a project number somewhere.

If all else fails, you should be able to find a log file. Use file search to look for FAHlog.txt and open it in Notepad or Wordpad. It should list the recent activity, and if you scroll back to the start of the current work unit entries you should find the project number. It'll say something like: Project: xxxx (Run xx, Clone xx, Gen xx). The xxxx is your project number.

Yeah, you're right... The days of 1760 points units are gone, looks like I'm stuck with a 300 points one :(
Still, I'm at 22% now.

Right click on the icon in the traybar, open 'status - my folding' and you'll have your stats and the unit you're currently working on.
But to check your progress once you have a few units in, I recommend this site.

I found the project number in the queue info; Its currently working on project 895. The link you gave me says that that project is worth 165 credits per work unit but F@H says its at 500/5000 (which led me to believe it was worth 5000 points). So its only completing about 3 points per hour.

Oh well, at least its working correctly. :)

I have another question:
I have two computers so am I allowed to have F@H on both computers under the same username?

To be on the safe side, be sure to assign different machine IDs to both.
It's an option at the bottom of the advanced tab in the configuration panel.

That's another confusing measure of progress. We've discussed percentage and points, but if you look again at the log file you'll see that it also lists the number of steps completed. The folding calculation simulates a sequence of steps in the changes to the molecule, and your unit consists of 5000 calculation steps. The statistic you quoted meant 500 out of 5000 steps had been calculated.

Yes, I have two computers folding. I haven't done anything special to give them different machine IDs. My old single CPU system does about 2 points per hour. It's not a lot, but every little helps :)

Insane I have power saving software (ASUS AI) which switchs my PC powerconsumption down while i use the PC at less then full capacity. Having CPUs at 100% usage kinda defeats saving power for me

Hi everyone! :wavey:

I'm no longer on the night shift at work so sadly I don't have the time anymore to participate in the forum discussions as I used to enjoy doing.

Our computer systems are finishing an upgrade so I hope to be adding some major power to the team's efforts very soon.

Nice to see the old familiar names and hello to everyone I haven't had the privilege of meeting yet.

Keep up the good work!

I believe that you only have to have different machine IDs if you run 2 (or more) clients on the same PC. You do not have to worry about machine IDs if they are running on different PCs.

You can have the same username on all the PCs you have running, that way all their points goes to your username.

On the powersaving side, I switch my monitor off whenever I'm not actually in front of the PC. The bit that it uses to fold I feel is worth the cost.
