My "folding garden" is up, an Athlon 2.7GHz dual-core and two nVidia 9600GSO video cards. Once it proves itself stable I'll overclock the video cards a little bit and see about maxing out their production.

Oh thats not fair, I want a dedicated machine too.

EDIT -- How much power would 4 9600GSO's need?I doubt it would be over 750W

I'm sure if your willing to fork over the cash for another phone line coming in they will slap DSL on it for you. Now what gets more challanging is finding the right router to aggregate both connections for you.

Okay, while I just realized that I posted that question in the wrong thread, ill answer this here. I wouldnt want to aggregate the connections. So thats not the problem. And ATT offers phone-lineless DSL for 10$ more than the regular one.

Aww in that case it should be no problem at all. They most likely already have the second line dropped from the pole to your house. Just have to call emm up and have emm turn it on. Then you would need to connect line 2 to the new modem. This could be done easly with a line splitter. Can find those at any local store.

Well im still exploring the options. Not quite ready to dump 45$/mo into an internet connection when i already have one (parents are somewhat restrictive though, and it is Sloooooooow)

I'm hoping it isn't, that's the size PSU I have. I read somewhere that they draw about 65-75W full load and OC'ed, so unless the rest of your PC is draws unusually high wattage it should all run somewhat comfortably under 700W.

Originally the two 9600GSOs were reporting 70degC core temps, apparently even under full load their fans were fixed at 30% speed. :cringe: I forced them to 90% speed and the temps came down to the low 40s. They were each producing about 2900PPD at factory clock speeds, I've just overclocked them around 25% (680/1700/1000 to be specific) and they're reporting up to about 3700PPD each with core temps in the low 50s.

well, sadly I spent 100$ yesterday on some stuff, so that puts off my plans of a 4x GPU system for a while more. But I basically plan to throw in 50$ from each paycheck into the budget for that. Then 3 months down the line, upgrade through EVGA's step up program. And possibly continue to do so.

EDIT -- well, another hamper. The electric bill arrived today and holy hell. Running this pc alone is 55$/month. Now mind you, thats 24/7, but that is still a lot of money...

I can't believe how stupid I am...

Well, I just got back from a nice holiday in the French riviera and was surprised to hear my computer running when I opened the door, as I thought it had shut down. It was indeed in idle mode and there was a lot of alert messages all over the desktop.
I checked the log file and realized to my utter horror that the client had faithfully tried to send the results 183 times over the past week.

Yep, you guessed it, last thing I did before I left was to turn off my big surge protector next to the TV. Yes, the one which my router is connected to :wallbash::suicide:

A week of power for nothing... I really feel stupid now. (and yet, I'm not afraid to share it with internet strangers ;)).

We dont hold grudges.....dolt. :p

Oh, that sucketh mightily. With the last bill in for my foldgarden (it'll be four 9600GSOs by Friday afternoon), it comes to almost $600. 'Tween you, me, and teh intarweb, I wouldn't have built it in the first place if I had to pay the electric bill for it, and/or didn't have a server room with a couple extra thousand BTU of cooling to put it in.

I was wondering what the heck happened to you, you were showing several thousand PPD there for a little while then nada. No worries, happens to all of us, but more importantly welcome back! :)

Well, fotting the bill for the hardware isnt too bad. Cooling it shouldnt be too big of a problem either, although by that point Id want an AC. But a yearly running cost of 900$ is kinda putting me off. Well, one can dream...and watch you rocket to first place.

If you close it before its done do you lose all the work?

You can shut it down and restart as many times as you want and it will carry on.

You will only lose all the work if it is not shut down properly such as a power failure or machine crash so the data files get corrupted, even then it will often be able to pick up from a checkpoint so all will not be lost.

Some of the cores have problems if you pause them for too long though. They become unsynced and the whole WU becomes corrupted. Happens a lot with VM implementations I hear.

The high performance SMP and GPU clients also get work units with tight deadlines, so if you interrupt them for significant periods the results will be too late and will not count.

Heh! Igloo I see your gonna make me work for that number 3 spot :p

 Yeah, I think I'm going to take and keep #2 for a while. :D

Here's the "foldgarden", I installed the fourth 9600GSO yesterday afternoon and it's reporting between 14.5-16K points per day (via fahmon software) depending on the work units, with all four overclocked:

Not much to look at, really...

 Yeah, I think I'm going to take and keep #2 for a while. :D

Yeah, I was only keeping it warm for you. Now my paltry four core SMP Mac can sit back and relax while all these upstart GPUs take the strain :)
