Tech tree statistics and ingame tech tree.

Most tech renames come from the asymmetry between the pedia descr and the tech name. Some of them are redundant (Mind Uploading and Whole Brain Emulation are synonyms), but I will accept pretty much all of the revisions. Animal Husbandry is more about agriculture. Pastoralism is older and was widely practiced by nomadic cultures, not sedentary ones. Nocturnalism makes sense as a biological adaption. Nocturnalism is preq of Prehistoric Warfare, so Ambush Tactics was a reasonable rename under this lens. Dualism is vague. Dualism refers to many different philosophies about the duality of nature, including substance dualism. I'm fine with Heritage, but the asymmetry between the pedia descr and the tech name is still there.

Because of Megafauna Domestication. Felid, Equid, and Camelid are more general.
The Megafauna Domestication tech is for the Rare Riding animals, the what If kind.

The changes to the 3 I mentioned really have nothing to do with it, as they are the more common riding/burden animals. Along with Elephant.

Imhpo the changes were just cosmetic. I can change them so I will type of decision making. Don't mean to offend you but that is all they are.

Well then pedia entry should be changed, not tech name.

I'm not sure if you reverted some Pepper's renames - this google doc doesn't contain all renames like Advanced Metallurgy -> Titanium Manufacturing or something like that.

By the way your changes were conjoined with Billw text fixes, this means your commit was recommitting Billw's tech text fixes too.
I noticed my renames (hunting related techs) were recommitted too lol.

I can identify the ones I'd draw a hard line on later. The rest is all up for discussion, and potentially each could be brought up and voted on. I can make a new thread for each one, one at a time, and get us all to vote after some proposals and considerations.
 
To be honest, I don't see any on that list that I see as definitive improvements. Some I'm neutral on, and some I disagree with. Generally I'd say it's best to avoid renames unless there is a strong case for it and something close to a consensus.

To comment specifically on a few, I would very much like for Artificial Planets and Artificial Stars to remains as they are. Astronomical Engineering sounds too much like Astroengineering, which is mainly for Dyson spheres. For Fusion, "Fusion Reactions" could refer to things like the hydrogen bomb, or electrostatic fusion for making medical isotopes, that we've had for a long time already. If we really want to change the name, maybe call it Fusion Power instead, since it really is about power production.

I was under the impression that the Consciousness tech was about the period in history where (allegedly; I'm not sure anthropologists are firmly in agreement here) people began to realize that they have subjective experiences of the world that are distinct from objective reality. It was a critical basis for symbolic and abstract thought.

Aside from that, I don't have strong opinions.
 
Camelid includes Llamas.

Llamas have always been under the Camel Domestication umbrella.

Like I said at the beginning it's a nitpick. These changes imhpo are just cosmetic. An exercise in "I can change something so I will".

And what is the point of changing Chopping which is an act, to Choppers which is a person? The Tech is not People, but rather the act of using a tool to cut down a plant. Another pointless silly change, again imhpo.

Two of them are embarrassingly stupid: Law Codification and Weaponized Ions (although 'Ion Beam Weapons' I would agree with)

I see a few in there that are obviously better, for example Food Preservation -> Canning. Food Preservation was invented thousands of years ago, it didn't start with canning things. Dualism > Moral Dualism is also good, there are a few meanings of dualism just within philosophy itself.
Changes that disambiguate or improve precision (when they don't imply other technologies that we don't have, e.g. Line Fishing implies we have other Fishing technologies, but I don't think we do?) are good as far as I'm concerned.

And the exploration of the concept, philosophically speaking, is what the tech represents, Moral Dualism being only one portion of it.

You're probably feeling a bit bashed right now but you'll also notice that many renames have had some support as well as many others being criticized. Funny enough, this is actually a fairly intense subject as far as opinions go and stirring the pot is often ill advised (lol). I get WHY you suggested many of the renames and I think anyone who looks through it closely is going to have many points of agreement AND disagreement throughout the list.

I think we may need to narrow the discussion to one at a time here and start up a distinct thread for it... I know I have executive authority but I would prefer we all come to at least some consensus on some of these.
 
We may need to focus on per era. I try to revise and revert tech name changes if the majority say that tech should be renamed or not. It's more or less democratic, and the above criteria (buildings that are enabled, pedia entries, units, art, representation, and immersion/realism). Any one of these is subject to change and even negation if there are good reasons to do so.

Pedia entry never should be reason to change name of tech.
Instead pedia entry should be changed.

Better idea would be to revert tech renames commit and just discuss it on era by era basis.

127 techs were renamed.
 
Best to start with the author putting forth the reasoning and argument for each change. Perhaps google doc might be best for this, people can add a column with their name, and give their opinion.

Good idea, especially that around 13% of techs were renamed.
