In Speech Before Nation, President Outlines His Plan "For a New South Africa"
Picture: President Thato Pillay addressing the nation
The president began with "The past few decades have been hard on South Africa. Public trust is at an all time low. The economy is in a decline and we have no place in the world stage. I come to say that we can fix this. In South African history, every generation has faced monumental struggles. Our ancestors seventy years ago faced an apartheid regime, and the brave men and women rose to the challenge, responding to hardship with courage and equanimity. Can this generation do no less? Then the president outlined the first part of his plan, which he has called A New Economy
"South African infrastructure is a horror. It is far easier to move by boat from Port Elizabeth to New London than to take the roadways. I plan on securing seven hundred million dollars to connect major cities together."
However, the new economy is about more than infrastructure rebuilding. As Pillay notes: "South Africa used to be a world leader in science. The first human-to-human heart transplant was performed by cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur Hospital in December 1967, Max Theiler developed a vaccine against yellow fever, Allan McLeod Cormack pioneered x-ray computed tomography, and Aaron Klug developed crystallographic electron microscopy techniques. Today however, other nations have surpassed us. The reason for this is simple - our universities have suffered, and can no longer build the technical and scientific expertise our nation needs to become a technological leader. In 2013, over seven hundred thousand students attended South African universities, now the number is less than a quarter that. I propose subsidizing our universities and paying for the costs of our brightest and best to go there.
The third pillar of Pillay's economic plan is a government run investment bank to "invest in public works and small businesses, thus driving economic growth"
The final pillar of the new economy is trade. A list of candidates have been offered from Saudi Arabia to the Sahel Protection Alliance, although nothing has been confirmed or finalized.
The second part of the president's plan is called the "New Government". Of this he says, "In order to restore public trust in the democratically elected representatives of this nation, the political process should be made more transparent so concerned citizens can understand the decisions being made, as well as where their representatives are getting money from." His plan also includes capping campaign contributions and ensuring politicians couldn't keep their campaign money after the election was over.
There have also been vague promises of restoring political freedoms lost in the aftermath of the Port Elizabeth crisis
The Third part of A New South Africa has been called "The New Military"
The President says: "Over the past few years, it has become abundantly clear that recent agitation is being encouraged by outside forces pouring in from our anarchy wracked neighbors. In order to secure our nation from these radical anarchist threats, our military must project strength and stabilize the situation abroad. We must become a more active player in the international arena."
Concluding remarks: "Today marks the beginning of a new South Africa."
