That's a Very Nice Pope You Have There - An EU3 AAR

Welcome to my Papal State AAR in EU3: DW, v5.1. I'll admit I still have not played passed 1540 in any game, but that is about to change. I've committed myself to play this save until the very end of the game with no exceptions (except reloading to prevent from being destroyed).

At the moment I have no special goals or intentions, except to unify Italy and become a world power. Whether or not I will form Italy or not is unknown. I hope not to, but if I am in dire need of cores I might.

So enjoy the reign of Pope Remake XX

Ok so I actually played about 10 years before deciding to turn this into an AAR (thus there are not any pictures for these 10 years). So this is going to be me explaining how I got to where we start...

I start by adjusting research and building one LMI. My mission was the conquest of Ulm Ferra. I take my 4 (?) unit army and attack Urbino and annex it. Meanwhile, Urbino is allied with Modena. I quickly conquer them as well, however since they are in the empire I vassalized them instead of annexation.

My next quest was to get the manpower (and the provinces I needed to control the Holy See) from Southern Italy. Thankfully, two years after the war with Ferra, my prayer was answered. Aragon attacked Naples. For another year I waited. The Aragonian army destroyed the Napelease army and ended up declaring white peace. I immediately struck before they could rebuild and took Abruzzi and Apulia. Along with this I ended their alliance with Milan (who thank goodness didn't honor it against me) and made them release Epirus.

Finally I used my extra magistrates to get me some nice cultural tradition and some 5-6 star advisers: trade tech, production tech, and infamy.

That' pretty much catches you up so here we go... the war with Venice.

I've prepared my troops on the border of Naples for my second invasion when:

:cringe: was my immediate thought; as well as !!@!*#!*& I'm dead. I have perhaps the richest nation in the world at war with me and my economy is still pretty crappy. How do I end this ASAP? :hmm: That's when I had a revelation. Vince = CoT>CoT = $$$>$$$ = [pimp]. It would be the greatest rags to riches story to date. We could get an inspirational movie written about it in 600 years. However, is a 600 year saving bond worth the risk? I think so. TO WAR!

I start my 9k and 5k armies marching towards Treviso (assuming the Venitian navy will prevent me from reaching Venice itself). A few weeks later...

Well that was too easy, where's the Venetian army... or fleet for that matter? Oh well no matter. Just continuing the siege and allowing the OPM Mediterranean allies of Venice to besiege some of my territories. Then even worse news comes in.

KHNt2.jpg

:suicide: Now I have two extremely wealthy nations at war with me. Way to not care for your people God. Oh... and the Venitian army shows up from the Balkans and drives me out of their capital. This war just keeps getting better and better. So much for that movie.

Remember when I said God didn't care about his people? Yeah, well I lied. He cares, a lot.

WOOHOO! Time to throw a "war's over" party. With Milan to at least take care of Genoa, we'll be done in no time!

Oh... looky here, the Venitian army thinks they can beat mine hmm. Well they were WRONG!

VaSoU.jpg

I love my army. :love: As I continue my siege of Treviso, a 1k Milanese comes to join me. Two months later the Venetians come marching back. I wish they would have learned their lesson the first time. :nono: ... ... WAIT WHATTT? Assaulting settlement?! NOOOOOOO! STUPID MILAN! GAHHHHHHH!

Wtu1D.jpg

Venice chased my entire army down and destroyed it. Thanks again Milan. That movies never happening now. I should get a "Ruined Dreams" casus belli against Milan. Paradox, get to work on that.

As I am about to declare peace:

Oh hey, awesome! However that still doesn't help my military-less nation. The war had started so hopeful, but it was anything but.

Still angry about that movie Milan. I'll get you for that! I swear by my fancy white clothes I will!

Reading with interest.

The Papal States can't form Italy, but it can form the Kingdom of God (which requires you to be with territorial control of all of Italy*, but not necessarily the cores**) in vanilla DW.

*Including Istria and Central Savoy, but not Naples.

**Last time I checked.

Oh, ok. That solves that question.

You get a lot of free cores as west india man wrote when you enact the decision...
Code:
				add_core = 101		# Liguria
				add_core = 103		# Piedmont
				add_core = 104		# Lombardia
				add_core = 105		# Parma
				add_core = 106		# Modena
				add_core = 107		# Brescia
				add_core = 108		# Verona
				add_core = 109		# Mantua
				add_core = 111		# Friuli
				add_core = 112		# Venezia
				add_core = 113		# Ferrara
				add_core = 114		# Romagna
				add_core = 115		# Pisa
				add_core = 116		# Firenze
				add_core = 117		# Siena
				add_core = 118		# Roma
				add_core = 119		# Ancona
				add_core = 130		# Istria
				add_core = 1774		# Treviso
				add_core = 1862		# Cremona
				add_core = 1875		# Cuneo

...and a nice modifier for +10% manpower, -0.05 badboy, +1% prestige and 0.5 magistrates...

...but the papacy will be removed from the game.

Remember to exploit your always 100% Papal influence combined with number of provinces to always be Pope. To excommunicate they need to have bad relations with Pope so excommunicate them and everyone gets free DOWs

That's the plan.

I just played and annexed Naples and added Tuscany and Mantau as vassals. I may not post an update for it because nothing exciting happened (it was was just quick sweeping up of minor armies and waiting for sieges to end).

I'll be watching. :scan:

Did you use the holy hand grenade on venice?

I've played at least enough for two more parts, but I have to get up at an inhumanly hour tomorrow and will be gone all day. I hope to have several parts up on Sunday.

While I lack DW, I'd say spamming excommunication would be a great way to help prune the big nations of Europe. Especially the likes of France or Austria, keeping them far the heck away from Italy.

I'll be following! Should be interesting to see the gradual unification of Italy.

1412-1428 may be tomorrow, depends how long it takes me to crop all these pictures.

Welcome back readers! Before we begin another chapter of our adventure I bring you some current statistics of our blessed nation:

Spoiler :
NOTE: My pictures got all scrambled in the upload process so some events may be out of order. I will try and remember events and put them chronologically, but there are no guarantees. Also, apparently a few ones are lost, but thankfully not important ones.

My goal was to unify Italy correct?

[Insert picture of DoW against Naples]

All of Southern Italy will be mine!

Nay and YEA! A chance for revenge!

Anywho, back on task. Sieges appear to be going well. In no time, they'll belong to the papal state.

Oh, I don't care WHAT you say peeps, the POPE decides what to do around here, son.

PWNed son. To celebrate this victory we need to create a holy rap! However that will be for another day. This was after vassalizing the remaining Italian OPMs.

The next wonderful opportunity for expansion comes from Provence...

Like a cat we pounce!

What's this? Milan declares too? Not in our alliance??? Well, so much for annexation.

Sieges are going nicely, but poor France.
