At the core of Islam is the belief that all Muslims are brothers/sisters. There is a very strong sense of community and Muslims are taught to care more about others than themselves.

It is therefore conceivable that if there is a sustained upswing in religious observance in historically Islamic countries that some sort of European Union-like organization could emerge between Islamic nations. It would serve as a realistic alternative to the strong nationalistic movement that we've seen in the last few centuries. Recall that so many Muslim countries' borders were set by colonial powers, are largely artificial and have created a great amount of friction between the many individual ethnicities in each of these countries. Naturally this sort of governing structure would have to be very tolerant of (non-violent) interpretations of Islam (meeting the needs of both Sunnis and Shi'as, as well as smaller Islamic minorities) and seek to build a foundation on common beliefs and similarities rather than differences.

Also, it is important that non-Muslims' rights be protected and I stress that an Islamic Union would be a democratic organization, and require democratic governments in member nations.

Now, assuming for a moment that such a thing was realistic and occurred, would you all see it as a positive development, or a negative development? Consider issues such as security (terrorism), addressing problems such as poverty and so on.

Here is a map showing the world-wide Muslim population. Green represents Sunni Muslims while Blue represents Shi'as.

I have deliberately limited the poll to two options, because putting a "maybe" or "it depends" option would likely suck in too many votes. Basically just vote according to which option you are leaning towards more strongly and post here with details if you want to elaborate.

Also, would any of you consider an Islamic Union a new threat to the West/Non-Muslim countries?

well, we already have the arab league, even though that doesn't cover east asian muslims. Still, I think that makes more sense than a union completely based on religion...

Negative development.

Next time we invade a Middle-Eastern country we would have to fight all of them (Except Israel).

I've stressed in my original post that an Islamic Union would be a democratic organization, and require democratic governments in member nations.

This means that America shouldn't be invading in the first place!

The Arab League, unfortunately, is not as strong a political organization as it could be.

Remember, the Arab League only relates to Arab Countries, but the vast majority of Muslims are not Arabs.

There is an organization more similar to the Arab League called the Organization of the Islamic Conference which includes most, if not all Muslim countries. It even includes Guyana and Suriname in South America, and Russia has observer status.

Here is a map. Blue are members and Pink are observers.

and have all vote to invade *insert heathen nation*?

no thanks.

i wouldnt support any religious empire.

But why create a large, powerful organization based on nothing but religion, and not taking into account economic realities, cultural differences, etc? Why create a union between countries like Algeria and Malaysia? Afghanistan and Surinam? The most successful blocs we see today (EU, NAFTA, ASEAN) are based around economic zones, not religious adherence.

Besides, saying that countries would have to be democracies to join would pretty much wipe the map anyhow. Who would be left? At my count, Iraq, Afghanistan, Dubai, UAE (I think), Malaysia, Indonesia....a rag-tag group with little in commo (and mostly democracies in name only)...

Islamic nations are too individualistic to have them unite in war, you can see that when it comes to countries like Palestine, you may have had some aggression when Israel formed but it had little to do with sticking up for the Palestinians. You may have countries involved in regions showing covert support, but that's hardly different from any area in the world. And it's more to do with politics than Islam.

As was mentioned this is a political union not a militaristic one, the fact that the vote swings heavily to no, just emphasises the fact that people have little understanding of Muslim countries or the politics of the Region, mostly knee jerk reactions, thinking that there would ever be a solidarity of force in such an organisation, any more than there would in the EU.

I wouldn't have a problem with it personally, but I can't see it happening with the divisions in Islam as it stands. Any more than I cans see Protestantism and Catholicism reuniting.

Really, then whats the deal with all the sectarianism in Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere?

Iraq is one thing, but recall that the majority of fighting in lebanon is between Shias (muslim) Maronites (chirstians) and Druze (um...miscellaneous?)...

No, I dont need to see a unified Islamic union.

That's the problem, relational worth shouldn't be based on religion.

My inherent dislike for Islam made me want to vote NO, but then I realised that the emergence of a sane centre, of something like a moderate centre of power, would be a boon to Islamic countries, as it would go a long way towards delegitimising the loonies. A centre, specially if ideological, always tends to pull things towards itself, and to shape reality into the way it wants it. I don't know how good it would be for the world, but it would very definitely be good for peace in the Middle East, and for forcing Islam to confront and adapt to the modern world.
