The Biggest, Baddest Unit

One thing I felt the need to correct:
The spaceship that goes to Alpha Centauri does not travel faster than light in SMAC at least. In SMAC the Unity leaves Earth in 2060 and arrives at the Alpha Centauri system in 2100, so it takes 40 years to travel 4.37 light years. This speed of about 0.1c is actually theoretically possible with the technology that we have today (using nuclear propulsion), it would just ridiculously expensive.
Still, a GDR would probably be cheaper and easier to make than such a spaceship but militarily impractical as its such a big target. A more realistic future unit would be infantry in mechanical exoskeletons which could happen by 2050 and would have practical advantages (though perhaps there is a chance they exist too in Civ5?). I'm glad the GDR is in, because if nothing else it will add another model to the game that can be used for mods.

wait you cancelled your pre-order because a better pre-order came out..

You might have considered pre-ordering the better pre-order rather than trying to boycot the game.

The requirement of steam was kind of annoying...
The confirmed DLC was quite a bit more annoying...
The new pre-order deal just pissed me off...

Who knows, maybe a better one will come along next week? I'm not going to keep cancelling pre-orders to try and get the best deal. I just said, "screw it" instead and cancelled the pre-order - they'll just have to live without my money.

Now this stupid garbage...
Yeah, I'm definately not buying this.

While GDR description seems like cheesy SciFi (laser beam eyes and other insane stuff), the actual model in picture is not too far fetched. Rockets at side, machine gun at the top, and optical sensor at the center. It looks like something that military could make today, if they wanted. It's not even that giant.

Of course, the effectiveness of such unit would be highly debatable.

Ironman, not Terminators.
and to counter the GDR, the super secret unit is a snowspeeder, with a grappling gun :lol::lol:

Whilst I like the idea of Armed Robots, I think the comedy name and surrounding information about it is out of touch with the rest of the units.

Why not put the name as Unmanned Combat Ground Vehicle (UCGV) or something plausible and maybe - I dunno - some real history of robotic warfare in the civilopedia? ;)

The name of GDR and the description shows thier love and devotion to us, as the idea originated here.

They took a very humerous suggestion for the game and well... I wouldnt say implemented, partly implemented, the GDR ideals are very strong :P, They took the name atleast and the description of a GDR and put it into the game instead of a boring Mech or Unmanned Combat Ground Vehicle.

This confirms that Civ5 is a sloppy love kiss to the modding community & fan base.

Why must people rush to condemn things? Why must haters hate?

This aspect of the human psyche I just don't understand.

Because haters gonna hate.

Anyone who doesn't like GDRs hates fun.

:agree:

Well it is very funny that i posted this..
..three times in this thread before you noticed it and after that you said this:
So yes you are right it is very hilarious

This is... insane.

"Let me count it for ya: It took you 6 pages, 17 posts and 2 infractions, before you mentioned this post of yours from another thread... (Which is after I wrote this: "Making eras optional is a good idea though. I would love to be stuck in classical era...")"

But you know what? Whatever... Obviously this is going nowhere (I tried, I thought there is still hope for you). But alas you're just going to twist everything around.
So be my guest, twist yours and other's words all you want, but as the saying goes: "The word is not a sparrow, once you release it you can't catch it."

So have a nice summer... or what's left of it.

And may the GDR be kind and gracious to you. :please:

While I did post in the Mech thread about how I thought that the traditional "mech" idea wasn't a very good or practical one, I actually don't have a problem with it the tongue-in-cheek way they seem to be implementing them.

After all, I seem to remember Julius Caesar asking me if I liked his salad. I kind of think it's a good thing of Civ doesn't take itself TOO seriously.

There was going be SOME high-powered future land unit--they just gave it an over-the-top name and graphics. It'll play just the same as if they had called it something else.

You are SO funny  You sure are struggling with this one arent you SickFak  Even your name is funny it describes you very well, also i think if you change the last letter from K to a T letter its even better :) Might also explain the body question that you popped up yesterday :)

Well enough with humor, lets get to the point shall we.

Ok once again:

I might want to try them but i also want a chance to turn those scifi units off. I dont know why but this seems to annoy you somehow :mischief:

The point for me is NOT and hasnt NEVER been HOW do they make them optional, as long as i have the option to turn those scifi units off from my game. If Firaxis doesnt give that option then we will get a mod for that.

Now get it?

Its not that big deal for me :) If you now just please stop half reading my posts and making a fool of yourself :mischief: Go get some rest for a change :)

Oh and nice summer to you too Sick :)

Sounds and looks rather goofy. Having a couple of goofy elements is OK, but I hope Civ5 wouldn't have many cheesy stuff like that.

Wait... This is a joke, right? Otherwise this is another reason to not buy the game.

It's so obvious that this isn't even Firaxis idea. Someone at 2k Games probably thought that it would be a brilliant idea to put some Avatar unit in the game as a marketing thing. I can't believe that Sid Meier allows this.

I wanna repeat this, which I've already posted earlier in this thread:

Also, another point. Just because the art shows them with two legs (which is less realistic) does not mean they necessarily must have two.

Axemen in civ4 were shown as stylized versions with huge axes, muscles and no armour.

The artwork is just a stylized depiction of what a possible combat robot mech would look like. It may seem cartoony but so do all civ units when you look at them closely.

No way, you think 2k cares enough to respond to the CFC Communitie's spam?
