The Biggest, Baddest Unit

Okay, yes, the GDR is a silly unit, but come on, it's a game, people. Stuff like this is allowed to be in a game just for fun.

This is, indeed, an awesome unit.

I'd say we're a lot closer to building giant death robots than getting to Alpha Centauri. Your realism conplaints fall on death ears, naysayers.

I love it when Firaxis trolls their fans.

I see it like how at the end of SimCity 2000 you build arcologies and ready them for launch into space. The only thing that bothers me about this versus that, is that in SimCity building arcologies was always optional. I don't want to be forced to build Giant Death Robots in order to combat ones that are built by my enemies.

What gives? Today isn't April 1st.

I'm not really too pleased. It's just... silly? Levity is one thing, but having something at the end of the game that's just a joke. I dunno. Also, the whole idea of the end game being reduced to pumping out a single unit (Or at least that's what the civ entry suggests) sounds like not so much fun.

Maybe it's meant to be a tech victory in unit form or something? Meh.

Long time Civ and Civ fanatics fan, agreeing with Aramel.

Beyond that, I think it is unfair to firaxis to complain about what the future will or will not have (if this unit is realistic or not).

The solution I propose for those angry among us is to win before future era, or Mod the game to end at the modern era.

Oh no a giant robot the game is ruined forever! *commits suicide*

This thread isn't really anything new about the robot being in the game, they showed and talked about it some time ago with the collectors box and the little pewter pieces (the robot is one of the pewter pieces).

It is not a joke, and it is in the game. This is confirmed and there is no way around it. The most popular early mod very well may be the mod without the robot.

Everyone saying "it's a joke" sound like they are just trying to make a very small joke themselves.

I for one welcome our new robot overlords.

Honestly, I'm glad to see they've added at least one future-era unit. It never seemed right to me that the games really never give you post-1970s units (Civ I even stopped at World War II) even though the game can go well into the 2000s, depending on difficulty level. Yes, it's a little bit of sci-fi fantasy to have walking mechs, but I'm glad they chose to make the future unit unique instead of just be a different flavor version of an old unit (such as modern armor is to the tank).

Giant Death Robot, is just an affectionately named "Mech", The reason they wen't with the title Giant Death Robot is a testament to the developers love of thier modding community, by grasping this totally fun concept into the future tech stage of the game, its not silly, (apart from the name) A Space Elevator can't be built yet, though we will be able to build one eventually, yet the technology was in Civ4BTS, no one complains about that, so why complain about a mech, we have mechs that exist today, and for combat purposes or soon will be, not Giant Death Robots mind you, but thats a possibility for the future of war fare.

I just think its funny how the developers take a suggestion from the modding community, (atleast the name sake) and implement it into the game, and some people find it outrageous. Perhaps you shouldn't be participating here if you don't want developers to look at your idea's ^>^.

It has been confirmed, it is not a joke, GDR/Mech is in, and they have humerously named it GDR and given the proper GDR description in the civopedia. It's no different to some other puns they have put into their games over the years.

Why hasn't Perf commented yet?

To sum it up - a marketing gimmick that has boost up the views in the sub-forum (Civ 5) :)

I could have sworn that views was around an average of 80 a day as of late, and now it is about 135 right now.

To prove that it has become somewhat viral in this whole forum, somebody post one up in the Off-topic section.

I agree, they desperately need something. Can't really blame them. The unit is the secret unit that only shows up as it was said:
Very rarely because it only appears in a game if the game is played out a certain way IIRC.

So why are they spamming the Secret Unit all over the place like this? Instead of keeping the Secret Unit a surprise for players to find, like an Easter Egg?

Is this 2K ruining the surprise Easter Egg unit (for money)? Like telling a 4 year old there is no Santa Clause? :santa2:
