What is with all the complaints about the Giant Death Robot?

It's a GIANT. DEATH. ROBOT.

It's awesome.

I love you Firaxis

Here's an idea: GDR requires uranium. Probably a lot of it. Perhaps the balancing factor is the inability to build the equivalent number of nukes, which one would assume will be dropped on the head of said death robot. Just a thought.

I agree, they desperately need something. Can't really blame them. The unit is the secret unit that only shows up as it was said:
Very rarely because it only appears in a game if the game is played out a certain way IIRC.

So why are they spamming the Secret Unit all over the place like this? Instead of keeping the Secret Unit a surprise for players to find, like an Easter Egg?

Is this 2K ruining the surprise Easter Egg unit (for money)? Like telling a 4 year old there is no Santa Clause? :santa2:

This isn't the secret unit. It was specifically stated that the secret unit will not be in the civipedia. Whatever the secret unit is, it's staying secret for now.

After reading that unit's description, I got a weird feeling Godzilla might make an appearance in the game.

Well thank goodness! But that is almost bad... although I think Mech's are cool (like I remember the classic Earthsiege game), I don't know if I care to have some Mech frenzy in 2035 in every game I play.

It's stretching the gameplay > realism to bounds that just shouldn't be stretched.

Yeah. I'm thinking though, that given that it requires Uranium [which I imagine being fairly scarce], I'm hoping that this thing won't be very cost-effective, to the point where [in my wildest dreams] it'll hardly ever be built, or [at the very least] end game won't devolve into nothing but mechs because only a few will be built. Maybe 1-2 per civ.

I'm also going to be using the first mod that replaces it with something less ridiculous >.>

Apparently, no one has ever won a space race victory because its more likely we will have GDR in some form before we ever go to Alpha Centauri.

Its funny how people will stretch their "suspension of disbelief" for one thing since it has been in since Civ1, but not some other thing that is new. :crazyeye:

Calak has a very, very good point. If you have uranium and are balancing GDR with nukes the GDR doesn't seem overpowered at all.

As far as the secret unit goes I think Godzilla is a good guess. Think of it, he only comes into play if a player gets nuked. That is quite a unique production requirement, and is worthy of secretude.

I do love the blindness people seem to be showing. An automated, fusion-powered walking tank is infinitely more likely than us building a FTL drive, a self-sustaining colony ship, and then leaving to settle another star system!

The amount of excitement here (both positive and negative) seems undue, considering that this unit will appear so late in the game that you (hardcore guys) won't see it in 99% of your games.

In my case, almost all war happens during that last few percent. So having endgame units be sci-fi will make the game feel sci-fi. And if I wanted that I'd play a sci-fi game. Maybe I'll play V differently, but as it is war happens at 3 points of the game, 2 of them optional:

1-- did I start with someone else on my island? If so, rush. the "war" doesn't last long. If not, build peacefully.
2-- I discover cannons first. DIE LONGBOWMEN, EAT HOT BALLS OF LEAD, AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA. This war is against my nearest enemy, maybe nearest 2 if both are weak and small. It lasts a bit longer, but it's still a fairly small diversion from my builder habits.
3-- Endgame is approaching, I have a SOD with plenty of artillary, modern armor, and mech infantry, all begrudgingly built to prevent the AI from declaring war so I could concentrate on building as much as I could. It now occurs to me that I may as well do something with them, and I have them devour the rest of the globe like locusts.

This third stage is long, seemingly dragging on for, well, longer than I'd care for it to, honestly. The empire building part of the game has fallen away and I am now playing a war game. This is a big part of the game. And again, if I'm doing that with giant death robots instead of tanks, it's going to feel very much like a generic scifi game and not at all like a civ game =/

So yeah, once someone makes the simple mod to replace that with something that isn't a joke, I'm gonna be all over it.
