The Biggest, Baddest Unit

In my case, almost all war happens during that last few percent. So having endgame units be sci-fi will make the game feel sci-fi. And if I wanted that I'd play a sci-fi game. Maybe I'll play V differently, but as it is war happens at 3 points of the game, 2 of them optional:

1-- did I start with someone else on my island? If so, rush. the "war" doesn't last long. If not, build peacefully.
2-- I discover cannons first. DIE LONGBOWMEN, EAT HOT BALLS OF LEAD, AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA. This war is against my nearest enemy, maybe nearest 2 if both are weak and small. It lasts a bit longer, but it's still a fairly small diversion from my builder habits.
3-- Endgame is approaching, I have a SOD with plenty of artillary, modern armor, and mech infantry, all begrudgingly built to prevent the AI from declaring war so I could concentrate on building as much as I could. It now occurs to me that I may as well do something with them, and I have them devour the rest of the globe like locusts.

This third stage is long, seemingly dragging on for, well, longer than I'd care for it to, honestly. The empire building part of the game has fallen away and I am now playing a war game. This is a big part of the game. And again, if I'm doing that with giant death robots instead of tanks, it's going to feel very much like a generic scifi game and not at all like a civ game =/

So yeah, once someone makes the simple mod to replace that with something that isn't a joke, I'm gonna be all over it.
Tanks are still in the game, and if you so choose you can still conquer the globe with artillery, tanks, and the various modern units.

however, if you so choose, you can play a bit longer into the FUTURE era and use GDR.

Missing the point. The point isn't that I especially enjoy tanks-- in fact, I don't enjoy war much at all, I just do it at the end-game because 1-- it'll help my score, since Civ seems to think that anyone who isn't a sociopath bent on world domination is Ethelred the Unready =/, and 2-- I feel like it's a waste to build the SOD and not put it to work. What I was saying is that I go to war when the game starts drawing to a close. Since it'll now be drawing to a close with a ridiculous joke unit, that's what I'm gonna be fighting with =/

Still hoping it's rare that they're built, and still fully planning to jump on the first mod that gets rid of this crap.

I do love the blindness people seem to be showing. An automated, fusion-powered walking tank is infinitely more likely than us building a FTL drive, a self-sustaining colony ship, and then leaving to settle another star system!

Or flattening the Rocky Mountains to turn them into fertile grassland *cough* Civ2 *cough*

Ok, so now apperently this is real now. I am really dissapointed. Honestly, I don't really want the game anymore.
Unless you are gay, you don't deserve to walk this earth with balls enhancing your shadow (assuming you are naked).
GIANT DEATH ROBOTS

Seriously, the naming is the most awesome tribute to the Civfanatics Community imaginable and as long as it really is balanced out well, I see no compelling reason at all why it shouldn't be in. Well yeah it may be unrealistic - a little - but, as said before:

You know CCCV it may be in your interest to finish your games earlier, because how quick you finish also determines you score. That is if you are so worried about what rank the game gives you that you will completely act against your own preferred playing style.

Quick side note, kinda disappointed no one has commented on my awesome name selection. though I feel SiLL and Perfection enjoy it as much as I do. :goodjob:

Why are you folks surprised by this? There is a mini of that guy in the Super Duper Deluxe 100 Bucks Edition.

Most of us were assuming it would be that super-secret unit that you'd only see rarely and under specific circumstances if you do everything just right. We didn't think every game was going to end like some kind of anime movie.

Haters gonna hate.

Anyway, I for one wel--- wait, someone already did that one.

Okay, yes, the GDR is a silly unit, but come on, it's a game, people. Stuff like this is allowed to be in a game just for fun.

This is, indeed, an awesome unit.

Yes, it's a game, but it's a game I don't want to play. I'm strongly thinking of waiting for Civ 5 Complete for sale on E-Bay for $15.

If the developers are looking at The Matrix Revolutions, apparently, to inspire the Giant Death Robot, why not include an economic victory condition inspired by the corporation that was too big to fail, AIG? Personally, the name chosen for the unit strikes me as simply silly, unbecoming of a successful series like Civilization.

This is not realistic. There is not much strategic use for a bipedal combat robot. Heck, there isn't even much use for any kind of bipedal robot. It says it has a kung-fu punch but where are it's arms? The purpose of this kind of robot is to be more mobile. However, two feet won't get you very far. I think it is much more likely to have a quad-pedal robot like a giant death robot. I think spider like robots would be combat unit for increased mobility in the future, not Giant Death Robots. I'm guessing we will have hovercraft too. If your going to put a future unit in at least balance it with others. Also, since when does a machine powered by fusion use uranium? Greg said this was an official part of the game and should be balanced so hopefully a modder can mod something to take its place. They could make a new animation and would only have to change the civilopedia entry and nothing else.

The uranium fusion thing is bothering me and other aspiring physicists. 2k Greg, if you are listening, write it down on Firaxis's list of things to patch. It should be simple, and it will make you guys sound smarter. ;)

Meh. Call to Power had GDR's in 1999.

It's been done.

I'm not sure if you were intending that as an insult or not, but he actually is gay. :p

I don't really mind; I usually played Civ IV with mods that added future techs w/ bots, clones and nano-thingies anyways. (And games usually don't last that long anyways; unless I feel like trying those units again.)
Only thing I don't like about GDR is it's name.
Giant Death Robot? Come on!

A starship built by AD 2050 is 100 times less realistic than a giant death robot.

(Even a giant death robot that thinks Uranium is used for fusion.)

Nah, the uranium is to power the death ray cannons, the fusion is to get the thing moving ;)
