The Civ 5 C&C Off-Topic Thread

I read playboy for the articles

Spoiler :
more seriously, I am making my way through the gentleman bastard series right now (midway through book 2)

What do you guys read for pleasure?

:mischief: Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth and Atlas Shrugged

Okay, not really. I do like lots of fantasy and Sci Fi. Game of Thrones (Mostly just for the dwarf Lancaster), the Dragon Riders of Pern, The Knife of Never Letting Go (Highly recommend that one), and Six of Crows are basically the kinds of books up my alley.

Also, in case you've mistaken me for someone with good taste, I love medieval romances.

Amazing series, I just finished number 3 a month ago. The series only gets better the further it gets. (Still waiting for someone to make the Therian Throne City States in Civ :3 )

Heh, two books I have been recommend multiple times and mean to read. Atlas Shrugged just seems like a mountain of a book (The Wheel of Time series is less intimidating that Atlas).

Be nice if George wrote a novel once in 6 years (besides reveling in new found fame. Less life, more work :p ) I've also heard a lot about Pern. Good enough to recommend? Knife is severely underrated, great writing and story. The end of that series man, the feels...

I'd recommend Mistborn: The Final Empire as its a bloody good novel, and to appeal to you're somewhat uncommon tastes, I say The Demon King (If you don't mind a little fantasy and political intrigue alongside love triangles)

Reading for pleasure? Hah! Next you'll ask who exercises for pleasure! Hah hah! :p

The way things are right now, you might as well start reading this:

Yeah I like them, but I wish the editing was a little tighter. There's a lot of fat imo, the books don't need to be as long as they are.

How dare you suggest such a thing! Deposing the Aristriarch like this would be treason, even if done by the Emperor himself!

I loved the Demon King. Of course, I have not read it in a while, so I'll have to go back and see if it is as good as I remember it. I'll definitely check out Mistborn

As for the Dragon Riders of Pern, it was a solid series, I remembering liking the plot more than the characters, although the characters are serviceable.

Finally, do yourself a favor and don't read Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I'd go as far as to say anyone who recommends that series to you and isn't trolling is no friend of yours. It is a series that pushes Rayn And's Objectivist philosophy with no regard to subtlety, and with all the elegance and finesse of a child throwing a temper tantrum. Plus, it has no technical competency, the author treats the English language like a dog he has to beat into submission

As for Atlas Shrugs, never read it, but I do remember this really funny quote about it, “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Whilst waiting for book five of The Coin and Dagger series, I've read Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy (and spin-off books). Really entertaining, well written and - even if it's nowhere near Kingkiller level of greatness - has some pretty awesome dialogue and character development.

For non-fantasy stuff, just bought a biography on Georg Cantor and an essay collection on Wittgenstein.

Do I have to play Civ Five to look at this thread?

Do you guys ever venture beyond the fences? It seems like a lot of stuff you cover in here is out there in the larger off topic world...

Historical murder mysteries mostly, such as by Bernard Knight, Christian Jacq and Lindsey Davis, but I do have a variety of other fantasy, history, science and occasional sci-fi books.

The pen is mightier than the sword, as anyone who has ever dropped a thick textbook on their foot can testify.
