The Death of Hive Balmung

The Arbitrator remembered his childhood on a distant world. He studied under a blue sky with a yellow sun. There were walkways of true stone, not ferrocrete, and trees, of the sort that once grew on Terra. At every corner of the Schola was a statue of some Imperial hero or saint, beautiful enough to make a grown man weep. The Imperial orphans were placed in such an idyll for a distinct reason. So that later on, when they were sent into hell and beyond, they would remember what they were fighting for. The order of the Imperium, and that order was beauty.

At the appointed age, the Schola had sent him to his assigned posting. It was not a generous one. A dying world and an understaffed hive, where every Judge and Arbitrator had to do the work of twenty. The young boy, now a trainee member of the Arbites, read the dossiers and was glad.

Yes, the Arbitrator was happy in his work. An Inquisitor or Commissar he might have been, but moving from world to world lacked the personal nature of keeping peace and order in one place, one Hive. There was certainly merit in fighting a faceless enemy across the galaxy. But that was war. Justice, on the other hand, was personal. There was no feeling compared to what came from intoning the Book of Judgment's sentence, and pulling the trigger on the boltgun that was his instrument of punishment. It was more than joy. It was righteousness.

These streets belonged to him.

I've just got the map to do (resource depletion only) and ork resources to figure out. This will be done tomorrow.

Thought for the day: Innocence proves nothing

WAAAGH!!
Manufactoria 3: Part 1
Reshuffling of the shifting alliances of the Hive had determined that this quarter’s key conflict would be that between the Orks and Crusaders. The first chapter of the conflict would be fought as it was before: between the Mechanicus and Dakka Splatta. The Mechanicus would fight this battle alone, as the crusaders from The Cathedral, the Arbitrator, House Varangian mustered their forces for battle.

Dakka Splatta’s forces seized the initiative this quarter. His armour unleashed a brutal long range bombardment of the Mechanicus positions. This was often not possible due to the terrain of the Lower Hive, lacking the open air or sweeping vistas of the upper hive and spire, but did effectively disrupt the Mechanicus defenders and destroy their fortifications where it could be employed. The AdMech armour could do little to stop them, as they were being held in reserve for a desperate moment. The next assault came from kommando forces who had used the disturbance to infiltrate the Skittari lines.

Occupied by the Sneaky Git kommandos, the Skittari were unable to properly defend their lines. Faced with overwhelming numbers, they fought a fighting withdrawl to their other possessions, hoping to stall Dakka Splatta until the crusaders arrived. It worked. Their new line, outside of Manufactoria 3, held firm. Dakka Splatta’s boyz stopped their advance and turned their attention elsewhere, allowing them to a chance to rest and regroup.

But not all of Dakka Splatta’s boyz were all involved in mayhem, as the crusaders were soon to find out…

Outcome: Dakka Splatta captures Manufactoria 3. Damaged to be assessed after all combat completed. AdMech forces withdraw to Warehouses 2 and Manufactoria 4.

Wasteland 12
The Big Bad Ork Band rallied together into one horde, eager for a fight to appease the boyz. They crashed through the Sump towards Wasteland 12, eager to avenge themselves against the Underalliance. But the Underalliance was ready. Having signed a treaty with General Aerion, which his successors had no way of breaking, the gangers and House Machrius could focus on the orks all around them. They devoted the bulk of their forces to defending their territories in the Sump.

Trandug Murthek was a man very familiar with getting what he wanted. He wanted to hold onto Wasteland 12. A .50 caliber stub round awaited any who doubted he would get what he wanted. Though he called for reinforcements from House Machrius, they were slow in arriving as they paused to invest Refugee Camp 2. The orks were already on the move.

The Orks hit the gangers hard and fast, but Murthek had played this game before. His men had prepared traps and ambush spots all around the area. Their knowledge of the conditions helped them to punch well above their weight class. They were lucky again and caught some of the ork armour in the think Sump. The preponderance of nobz helped the Band to fight their way through anyways, smashing aside the puny humies with their superior strength and firepower. Murthek held out long enough for the Machrius reinforcements to arrive, who worked furiously to blunt the orks. They managed to slow them down, with the assistance of gangers to show them to best paths to ambush them in the refugee camps, but though they did slow the orks, they could not stop them, not with the heavy weapons being brought to bear. The Underalliance retreated up to Refugee Camp 2, leaving Refugee Camp 4 utterly defenseless.

The Orks pushed up after them. They forced the humans back into Algae Storage 4. By now, the orks had exhausted their momentum. Underalliance forces threatened to close in from multiple directions. The Orks bunkered down and enjoyed the spoils of war. closing in from several directions. In order to complete their withdrawal, the Big Bad Ork Band retired to the Sump, confident that they had proven their orkiness.

Outcome: Grimmdurk captures Wasteland 12 and Refugee Camp 2. Refugee Camp 2 suffers 3M in damage. The Underalliance withdraws to Algae Storage 4.

Wasteland 1
Eager for a good fight, egged on by Dakka Splatta and Dok Bok, and accepting tribute from the Big Ork Band, the Bad Motha Trukkas took the only path towards a good fight: Into the territory of the Skulls.

The Skulls were caught off guard. Unused to Ork logic, they expected them to continue their campaign against the other Orks. The Skulls were preparing for more, harsher raids against the isolated Balmung Compact enclave and the beleaguered forces of General Aerion. The Trukkas were able to make significant gains before the skulls were able to mount a proper defense. The Radiskulls were obliterated in two weeks, breaking apart quickly before they were properly initiated into the skulls.

The gangers fought hard, but could do little to stem the tide. Only the tight confines kept the quick ork vehicles from overrunning and surrounding them. The skulls fought hard to keep the people they cared about safe, but those that had no connection to gang were left to die. Many fled with them, though many more were killed.

With the Skulls off balance, the Balmung Compact retaliated with a raid of their own. The skulls could do nothing to stop it. They escaped without significant casualties.

Outcome: Da Bad Motha Trukkas capture Wasteland 1. The Skulls no longer exist as a separate faction. Surviving units have joined the Brotherhood of Iron along with 10M in refugees. The Balmung Compact captures 5F and $10. An additional 10M was killed in the fighting. All other Skulls resources are captured by the Trukkas.

Refugee Camp 1:
The Grenzland Militia withdrew to their camp after their successful campaign with General Aerion. The two ork warbands that had rampaged past them had the Grenzlanders on edge.

They were right to be worried, for soon they were under attack from two ork bands. From the south came Dok Bok, and from underneath came Grimmdurk’s Deathskullz. The two working together by coincidence rather than any sort of plan, smashed the militia to pieces. There was little they could do to prevent the destruction of their forces. The Grenzlanders tried to retreat towards their ally Aerion, but found a devastating surprise waiting for them.

Angered at their losses under his command and having no loyalty to the foreign commander, the Necromundans killed General Aerion, their commissars, and any loyal officers. The Spiders reconstituted their gang and declared their rule over the underhive. They declared the alliance with the Grenzlanders void, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to feed the teeming masses. Instead, they raided the camp and stole whatever food they could find. They killed any refugees who tried to flee to their territory who couldn’t prove they had some sort of useful skill.

The remaining Grenzlanders were rounded up and enslaved by the Orks.

Outcome: Dok Bok captures Refugee Camp 1. Damage inflicted of 4M, 2M of that moves to Hab Block 4. 15M killed in the fighting, the Spiders capture all Grenzland F, all other resources divided between Dok Bok and Grimmdurk.

Warehouses 3:
Now that they had secured a route up, Grimmdurk pushed on to his next objective. The Spiders, returning from their own raid, had little time to prepare. But for the spiders, little time was needed.

The Spiders promised their conscripts that they would assist them from prepared positions deep in the warehouse district. The conscripts, not yet fully trained, but resolute, manned what makeshift defenses they could build and prepared to resist the Ork assault. They were hit hard but Grimmdurk, assisted by some of Dok Bok’s cyborks.

The Spiders however, had no attachment to the conscripts. They packed up everything they could of use from the warehouses and withdrew to the Hab Block, their new base of operations. Fewer mouths to feed would help them in the future, and hopefully conserve their energy and direct the Ork’s fury elsewhere.

The conscripts were soon scattered and beaten. The survivors were enslaved by the Deathskulls.

Outcome: Warehouses 3 captured by Grimmdurk. Suffers damage of $10 and 2F. Hab Block 4 increased income by $5 and 1F.

For the Emperor!
Manufactoria 3: Part 2
Just as Dakka Splatta was pushing the Mechanicus out of Manufactoria 3, the Arbitrator was preparing to show his support for the crusade. Unlike the large force gathering in the west, the Arbitrator’s forces were ready now, and pushed up into the Manufactoria.

They found that there were orks waiting for them. Dakka Splatta had ordered his non-organized orks to prepare defenses. Using huge amounts of orkpower and supplies, Dakka Splatta’s orks were at work. In this sector, the defenses were not extensive, leaving an opening for the Justicars. But Dakka Splatta kept back a strategic reserve just in case. The Bloody Boyz stopped the Justicars in their half-built fortifications. The Justiciars pushed back and made gains, capturing some of the supplies being used to build the fortifications

With the Mechanicus on the run, Dakka Splatta himself moved to join in the new fight. Their heavy weapons convinced the Justiciars to return home.

Outcome: Raid on Manufactoria 3 only partially successful. $10 to be spent on fortifications raided by the Arbitrator, added to his stores, 2 Orks being used to build them killed, but Orks happy at ‘winning’ another fight and able to finish their work.

The Arbitrator:

Dakka Splatta:

Manufactoria 3: Part 3
The Crusaders assembled in the Pilgrim’s Ring, ready to destroy the Xenos hordes. House Varangian was given the honour of leading the host. They were joined by several hosts from the Cathedral as well as half of the Order of the Emperor’s Tears, as well as the Frateris Militia. By this point, the Mechanicus, though already exhausted, gambled on a final attack on the Ork’s flank while the Crusaders pounded them from the south.

The Cathedral and Sororitas assented to Lord Davin Varangian’s command. His plan called for an assault in waves by the lesser infantry while the armoured units attacked what he believed were weak points in the Ork defenses which would be exploited by the elite infantry backed up with PDF units.

Dakka Splatta was ready for them. Finally, he had the fight he’d hoped for. Outnumbered more than 2:1, but with a nearly unassailable defensive position, he dug in with his dakkagun and prepared to splatta some humies.

As the conscripts approached the Orks lines, they had to brave not only a huge volume of fire but insidious traps alone the way. Many were killed in the traps set up by the Orks, but the righteous fury of the Frateris caused them to push on, even while the Balmung Irregulars lost their nerve. They hit the walls, supported from a distance where possible by the technicals.

Lord Davin was disappointed to find the fortifications so extensive that he could find no ‘weak’ spots, only spots less strong. He put pressure on them, committing the Cathedral’s forces to battle. The technicals were destroyed in huge numbers by the Ork tanks, but they provided vital distraction and their speed allowed them to hit wherever was needed.

Eventually a breach was made, but only because of the pressure on the west side. The Hussars and Sororitas led the charge, multi-lasers and heavy flamers blazing. Many were still splattered by the orks. The Mechanicus fought hard against the orks again, also suffering losses from mines and traps. Eventually the two forces met after encircling the Bloody Boyz. By the end of the quarter, they had taken half of the Manufactoria. The remaining orks fell back to other prepared positions. Though their situation seemed dire, their spirits were high, as they felt they were winning the fight and they knew that Dakka Splatta would have more tricks up his sleeve.

Outcome: Crusade suffers horrendous losses. Manufactoria 3 is again contested between Dakka Splatta and the Mechanicus. Half of Dakka Splatta’s fortifications have been destroyed. Man 3 suffers $20 and 2M in damage, risks being completely destroyed.

Manufactoria 7 and Wasteland 2
While the crusaders above them fought for their lives, the Underalliance’s Warlord Gorillian was leading his own crusade to face Dakka Splatta. They found the manufactoria empty, save for a few orks bartering with advance scouts of Dok Bok. They quickly invested the region before heading south to Wasteland 2.

Here, the encountered Dok Bok’s warband in full, flush from victosy against the Grenzlanders. The Underalliance was able to seize the majority of the wasteland before the orks could arrive. He allowed his boyz to skirmish with the gangers while he assessed the situation. Knowing he would be unable complete his goal of meeting with Dakka Splatt, even if he could defeat the large balanced force, and seeing that the wasteland provided nothing he needed. The Dok decided to lead ‘an attack in anuvver direction’, leaving the wasteland to the Underalliance.

The Emperor averts his gaze
Guilds 4
The Balmung Compact withdrew from the region in order to show their good faith to the Inquisitor and the Cadians. The Cadians, however, didn’t enter the territory. Desperate for food from the Inquisitor, they were extremely careful not to restart the fighting. They remained exactly where they were.

But nature abhors a vacuum. Local guild officials organized their own government. The Guild Alliance is friendly towards the Balmung Compact, as fellow hivers, but their goals and loyalties are as yet unknown.

Outcome: Balmung Compact withdraws from Guilds 4. Guild Alliance faction forms in Guilds 4.

Foreign Quarter and Spaceport Decius
Though both Cadians and Compact forces appeared to do their best to maintain the ceasefire, something happened to restart the fighting in the Foreign Quarter. It is unclear exactly what happened, but both sides blame the other. The Compact lines, manned with conscripts, were ordered to advance. They were sluggish in doing so, only the 1st House Regiment’s presence convinced them to attack the Cadians.

While the Cadians were occupied in repelling the conscript’s advance, the real Compact forces hit the Cadians from the flank. The blow was hard, and the Whiteshields buckled. The Cadians retreated to the Spaceport, leaving the 61st and elements of the 65th behind, encircled, which promptly surrendered. Only their discipline of Cadia kept the others from facing a similar fate.

The survivors prepared to make a last stand in the Spaceport. The terrain was poor for defense, but the Cadians occupied several guncutters and the hulk of a trade ship to use their anti-fighter weaponry on the advancing Compact. The Compact troops kept their wits and used what artillery they had as counterbattery fire. The House Regiments were able to use Valkyries to swing around, outside the hive and under the guncutter’s fire, sneaking in elements of the 3rd House Regiment, who quickly took over the hulk and turned the guns on the Cadians positions.

The Cadians saw the futility in continuing to fight. They surrendered, leaving the Spaceport to the Compact.

Outcome: Foreign Quarter and Spaceport Decius fall to the Balmung Compact. Foreign Quarter suffers $4 in damage, Spaceport Decius suffers $5.

Spire Tertias/Spire Heart
The Balmung Compact took advantage of the truce to capture Spire Tertias. The Lady Inquisitor advanced through Guild Alliance and Cadian territory to seize the Spire Heart. Neither force wanted to stop them as the truce had not yet been broken at this point.

Noble Houses 3
The Cadians counterattacked as soon as they got word that their southern forces were under attack. They struck Noble Houses 3 with all they could muster. It was fortunate for the Compact that there was little time left in the quarter for the Cadians to advance beyond. Compact forces attempted to reinforce, but could not reach in time.

Munitorium Command
When word of the continued fighting in the spire reached the Inquisitor, she mobilized her forces. The Mordian forces were elite troops the likes of which the Compact had not yet faced.

The Compact’s forces were returning from Spire Tertias and on their way to assist in the assault on the Foreign Quarter when the Mordians arrived. Though the Mordians were few in number, they had superior firepower, accompanied as they were by warhound titans and super-heavy armour. These machines of death cut gaping holes in the Compact lines, sending the conscripts scattering. The Compact abandoned the region soon after.

Outcome: The Inquisitor seize Munitorium Command. Suffers damage of $8, destabilizing spire Tertias slightly. Compact forces retreat to Noble Houses 1.

On the Homefront
The Mechanicus Working Group and the Underalliance have joined the crusade officially and derive all benefits from it. While the Arbitrator and House Varangian took part in the crusade, they have not officially adopted the ‘crusader’ policies outlined in the last update.

Despite the horrendous losses inflicted on crusading forces, morale remains high for all Crusader forces and any faction who took part in the crusade attacks. Kicking Dakka Splatta out of 5/6 of his territory has convinced the crusaders that they can and will save this hive from unbelievers and xenos. The advances of the other four orks forces are terrifying, but the Underhive is considered expendable to all hivers except those who live there. Besides, the damage done to Dakka Splatta proves what co-ordinated and powerful Imperial forces can do, as opposed to the fractious and weak forces such as the Skulls and Grenzland militia.

The Spiders have secured their food stores for years to come, but they are quickly running out of ammunition and other material needs. They can be expected to seek out some way to resupply themselves.

House Chaku has refused orders from the Inquisitor to provide food and soldiers. Without this aid, the Inquisitor was forced to make good her promises to the Cadians out of her own stocks. House Chaku was not in a position to assist the Balmung Compact during this quarter, but has position its soldiers on the border with the Inquisitor now that it has reformed its military. The Cadians are now entirely dependent on food aid from the Inquisitor.

The Mechanicus were sighting handing over heavy equipment to House Varangian once the two forces met in the southern half of Manufactoria 3.

Strange sounds and rumbling have been noted emanating from the territory still held by the Brotherhood of Iron and the Worker’s Liberation Front. A few have escaped from these zones, bringing tales of unknowable horror.

The Adeptus Sororitas has investigated the invasion from the Arbitrator against the Cathedral. They found many witnesses who corroborated the Arbitrator’s story, and much evidence that their tale was true. However, the mother superior of the sisters demanded absolute confirmation before she ruled against the Cardinal and Deacon she supported and their Cathedral. Deeper probing by members of the Scholastica Psykana revealed that some of these witnesses’ minds had been tampered with. The tampering showed no signs of psychic or chaos energies, only more material brainwashing, but it was troubling. In light of these findings the Order has ruled that they have found no evidence of Eccliesiarchical wrongdoing or taint leading up to the invasion of the Lower Markets.

My Lady, we ask that you cease and desist from continued attacks on the Balmung Compact. We stake our honour on that of Melchoir Trent. He has always been known for honest dealings and loyalty. You must understand that the attacks of your Mordians and the Cadians against the Glorinthian citizens of Hive Balmung and House Chaku reflects poorly on you. It is actions like this that give strength to groups like the Worker’s Liberation Front and the Brotherhood of Iron. We have still seen no evidence that the Compact started either round of violence. Please Inquisitor, return to your zone of control and restore peace to the respectable portions of the hive.

TO MELCHIOR TRENT OF HOUSE TRENT ACTING ON BEHALF OF THE BALMUNG COMPACT AND GENERAL ABNETT OF THE 128TH CADIAN AND HOUSE VARANGIAN

You said unto us, in HIS hearing, that you would uphold HIS peace. Perhaps I misheard. I will settle for that explanation. The others are distasteful to say the least. You will both bend knee to HIS throne and swear on HIM that you will abstain from further violence. Furthermore, as penance you will both send troops to support this HIS glorious Crusade. This will serve to make idle hands active, in service to HIM. We have contacted House Varangian and they agree that this is a good option, benefiting all in the Hive, Hivers and HIS Servants alike. Therefore, we propose that both parties agree to the following terms:

(1) To accept the Good Offices of House Varangian and I, in respect of this matter, with a further third member to be added as required.
(2) To accept the decisions of the Council of Good Offices in in respect of making determinations relating to the negotiations, and the terms contained therein, shall be binding;
(3) To enter into good faith negotiations with the specific aim of restoring borders to pre-conflict levels, forging a durable peace and reducing the scope for further hostilities;
(4) To abstain from further violence;
(5) An immediate exchange of all prisoners;
(6) An immediate deployment of forces, of equal size, to serve in the Crusade; and
(7) An immediate cessation of hostilities, with the area known as Guilds 4 to remain as a neutral place, and point of transfer across the borders.

In exchange for this, I undertake to allow trade to continue to flow through to Balmung Compact and furthermore agree, in principle, and contingent upon the good faith evidenced and the progress of negotiations to hand over the Munitorium Compound to the Balmung Compact. However, distasteful we might find the notion of bartering Imperial property; let it be known that we place HIS peace, HIS justice and HIS good government above such things.

TO THE ARBITER

We agree, and shall pending resolution of certain issues, assist.

TO OUR GLORIOUS CRUSADE

We shall send such troops as we can to assist in this matter. Providing certain issues are resolved...

House Varangian is willing to sign the Lady Inquisitor's treaty if the Balmung Compact is willing. It is becoming widely known that they favour the Compact in the conflict in the spire, but even more so they support peace.

Before everyone gets any ideas, I'm not in the Spire.

The noble council of the Balmung Compact finds these terms acceptable and commends the wisdom of the Lady Inquisitor in requesting a deployment of forces to the Crusade.

It proposes that a more precise quota be set, along the lines of half a faction's current armed forces. This shall achieve two objectives at once: both of putting Imperial forces to their rightful purpose and of demilitarising the Spire, which should go a long way towards preventing any future incidents while the investigation continues. If it was, as is supposed by some, a simple result of restlessness among some of the soldiers, then this should aptly remind them of their priorities and teach them comradeship; and if it was a result of ill intent on the part of General Abnett or some other person or faction on either side, this deployment shall nevertheless effectively deprive them of the tools with which to incite and wage civil war.

It would also like to inquire as to the possibility of the Cadians withdrawing from the lawful property of noble houses (Noble Houses 3).

---

Melchior Trent would like to personally thank the leaders of House Varangian for their part in resolving those current complications.

Yeah, sure, when the Compact, House Chaku, and the Guilds Alliance withdraw from the territory that we have bled for years to defend. We will agree to the deal. We continue to ask the Inquisitor for food to sustain the faithful.

We ask the Inquisitor for more detailed instructions regarding the Crusade and what is required of us.

Disturbing rumors have come to my precincts from the Underhive. Among these, rumors that, either a loyalist general and his officers were brutally butchered by their men, or that a villainous traitor and his underlings were justly liquidated by their loyalist battalions.

Often, we find proof of guilt or innocence in men's actions. If, as I suspect, General Aerion was a vile traitor best left buried in the depths of the Underhive, you will submit to the command of my trusted ally, Commissar Zaytsev. In return, I will allow your units to repair and reinforce themselves with my resources.

You will not find me as lax a master as General Abnett. We will restore order to this Hive, and you will be justly rewarded. Waver in your loyalty, and the Emperor himself will not save you from my wrath.

The Emperor Protects.
