The drawing thread

It has been an unseasonably warm April around here; some foliage is just beginning to bloom, so I went into downtown Chicago on Michigan avenue and did some drawing. I have never been all that comfortable with drawing buildings or painting with water colors, so I thought I would get a little practice at both. I did pencil drawings on site and then went over them with ink. When I got home I painted over them with watercolor paint.

These were pretty quick and easy compared to the other things I usually paint or draw. They are only about 8"x10" (20cm x 25.5 cm) on water color paper. I probably only spent an hour on each one. Not the greatest masterpieces I've produced, but I had fun doing them.
The first one is of a sculpture in Millenium park called "Cloud Gate." It's basically a bean shaped mirror. The second is the entrance to The Art Institute of Chicago. I'll try to get a less crooked photo later.

I'll probably go out into the city and draw/paint more. There are plenty of intresting sites I can think of just off the top of my head.
(The Chicago Theater, The Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza, The Water Tower Building, Navy Pier, Buckingham fountain, Wrigley Field, The Willis (Sears) Tower and the general skyline, just to name a few.)

I didn't know about the sculpture in daley Plaza.

There you go Chuchki! I knew you still had your talents with you! :)

Nice drawing, but i think you should try some other thematology as well. Wolves all the time gets repetitive and there is only so much you can do with them :)

As opposed to 3d cities that use the same buildings as hundreds of other cities before them only aranged in a different order and posted in 10 different subforums ?

Yea those never get repetitive.

...and back to topic, that is a well done drawing.
What kind(s) of pencil did you use, Chuchki?

Yes, those're soft colours. No extreme shades.
Nice eyes, btw.

I find eyes are one of the hardest elements to get "right".

Ergo,

I had posted this painting before on the drawing thread in the OT forum, but this is a much better photo here. It's not a perfect photo, but getting the right colors and contrast at the right angle with a digital camera can be difficult. It's acrylic paint 16"x20".

I'm not sure if anyone's already asked, but are you a career artist?

I haven't been asked that here before, but no. I don't make enough money from it to consider it a career. When I was working full time I considered it only as an occasional hobby. I got let go from my real job in printing a few months ago, so I've been spending most of my time painting and drawing to keep myself busy when I'm not looking for a job. I've never taken any art classes aside from a couple useless classes in high school.

I intend to see if I can be featured in a few art festivals this summer and maybe something can come from it; although I have very low expectations because I know it's extremely difficult to make it as an artist. I also get an occasional commission for a painting, but it is usually for someone I know, so I feel bad about asking for too much money. For instance I worked on a painting that took maybe 20 hours and they paid me $100. Hardly economical. I also really need to get a website.

Great work as always Danny :)

Do you have any concept/symbolic works? With your mastery of the basics (and beyond) i guess you can pretty much draw anything you want, although i remember you saying that you arent good with buildings. However those drawn in your pics don't look bad at all :)

Well, Danny, it's a pleasure to look at such artwork.
