The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

#1 thing I hate in Oblivion - The saves are too ambiguous! (Save1, Save2, Save3, etc.) I just accidently overwrote my main save when I didn't want to!

Atleast I have a save from 2 days ago... before Kvatch, and other stuff... :(

Cant you just go back to your last autosave. It should be the last door you came out of. (probaly to late now)

I only have 4 gigs left! (and yes, the autosave was too late anyway)

Maybe I should delete the Civ3 and Civ4 beta files... that should clear out 100 gigs. ;)

You can use the console for named saves. Press ~, and enter Save "name here". But your saves will still be ordered according to the internal index, not sorted according to the name.

Of course, :badcomp: to Bethesda for not adding that for PC.

I usally just use the quicksave, then make proper saves (I don't really have to worry about space at the moment anyway) at the end of the day.

And sadly, it is the end of the day. Why didn't someone put a warning for the addictiveness rating of this game on the box?

Thanks kcwong!
However im an archer so i cant fight the way you advised me.
I usally sneak a critical hit and then just walk backwards while fireing arrows and hope they dont catch up with me. But in oblivion gates they usally do and then they do alot of damage on each attack. I block the ones i manage to but it doesn help that much when you're blocking with a bow.

Im just made brawler in the arena:D

And i've also just got a mithril armour so i will try the main quest soon again.

Anyone got any good tips on how to improve my magic skill. I bought an "open easy locks" spell without realising that I need a certain level of conjuring (wrong spelling) and I'm not sure how to get that level up.

I love this game. it's the only game I have for the 360 so far but it's amazing. been playing it solid. really need to buy a house though cause I'm loaded up and I just HATE to have to sell my Dwarf Claymore :(

I'm heading to Anvil now after a rather fun time at Bravil looting and pillaging to my little black hearts content. I love being a thief

@ steviejay:

To train magic, you need to get yourself into the Arcane University - the only way is to complete the Mage guild recommenation quests.

An alternative is the official plugin (IIRC called Wizard's tower), which contains a spellmaking altar as well.

Once inside, you can create custom spells. From the spells you already know, create one with a cheapest effect - then it will also have a very cheap magicka cost.

e.g. For destruction, create a spell like: 1 pt of fire damage on touch for 1 sec.

Then find a location where you won't accidentally hurt an NPC, and cast the spell over and over. The game doesn't care if you're successfully using it or not... just cast it is enough. And casting a difficult spell won't make your skill progress faster. So with this very cheap spell, you can easily regen the magicka used, and thus can cast it for as long as you want, e.g. walk into a corner and use something heavy to hold down the cast button. You could even cast a damage spell on yourself then heal yourself to train Restoration school together.

Unlock spells belong to the school of alteration... among easiest effects are Shield.

That's the boring and non-RP way to train though. :) Just give yourself more chance to use spells... e.g. cast light instead of using torches, cast detect life instead of using enchanted items.

I have difficulty using a pure archer too. The enemies close in very quickly - the only way I can use bow to kill people is with good sneak. Keep a far enough distance (e.g. you have to aim higher), fire your arrow and back up. The enemies are likely to be unable to notice your presence.

No way to do that in the arena though. :(

Yeah i'll try that. Also i've just learned a "paralyse for 3 seconds on touch" spell. Hopefully i can use that to get some space between me an an enemy, however most of my magica i have to use on restore health spells:sad: ..

Also two questions about the game:

When killing ghosts with a bow, is it better to use a silver bow or is it only the arrows that matters?

When i use a poison that says: "damage health 3pts for 13 seconds"
Will that poison damage health 3pts just once, or once each second for 13 seconds?

If you got your opponent paralyzed, you might as well stand next to him and keep attacking (melee). They will take extra damage until they can get back up. Or you could use that time to run away or heal.

About bow and arrow: You only need either one. Normal bow with silver/daedric/enchanted arrows, or enchanted/silver/daedric bow with normal arrows will both work on ghosts. For enchanted bows, you don't even need charges.

"3pt for 13 seconds" means 3 damage each second, and lasts for 13 seconds.

So true, so true. Its a bug with the enemies not noticing you, and is both advantageous, but a little annoying, because its just too easy then. For the arena, all you have to do is shoot one or two arrows right out of the gate, hopefully hitting the enemy, and then running backwards in circles firing arrows at them. The only disadvantage to that is that you lose a lot of arrows.

That's where my Khajit comes in. Light-armored assassin type character. She'll use a bow and arrow when needed, but can switch to her trusty longsword after the first shot or two - usually only takes 1 shot.

BTW, what's a good way to make money? And I'm wondering how to permenantly enchant an item (not sure if it's permenant - but I don't even have the ability to do that yet - just signed up for the mage's guild).

Spoiler :
Right now, I'm figuring out the clues in the 4 Daedric Cult books. There's 2 versions of book 2 that I found - one's in the sewers.

I'm playing as an archer, though ironically I'm using my sword a lot more. I usually fire a couple of shots (this goes for the arena too) before moving in for close combat.

I'm also not entirely sure how to make proper money, though some more recent quests are being rewarded with special items I will simply never need, so I sell them.

Good way to make money,
Rob the castles around tamriel and sell your loot to sertain someones in a sertain secret guild... nudge nudge

For money you should buy some alchamy tools then buy all the fruits and vegs you can at each mage guild and alchemy store (and take what you can from boxes and plants and stuff) After you buy a bunch of stuff turn it into a potion and sell it back. you can make a nice profit. it also will help increase your alch. and merchant skills.

Yup, alchemy is the way to make money. Start with the 2-gold food ingredients, and make a lot of fatigue potions.

@ Chieftess:
All enchanted items are permanent. For armor, jewellary and clothings, the enchantment is the same as "constant" in Morrowind. For weapons, the enchantment is always "on strike".

Unlike in Morrowind, enchanted weapons won't recharge themselves slowly over time... so you need to use soul gems or varla stones to recharge them.

You can't enchant with some of the effects... and you can only add 1 constant enchantment (i.e. on armors and clothings).

To enchant stuff early, you can use the Sigil Stones you get when closing oblivion gates. Before you grab the sigil stone, you should save the game, and reload to get the effect you want. Some stones that have fortify strength +16, disintegrate weapon, or fortify magicka 50 pts are very nice. My character wears 5 items with Fortify Magicka 50pts effects -- that's 250 additional magicka there. :)

Hmm, I wonder if I still have that stone... (not sure if I do)

Anyway, the house in Anvil is 5,000 gold! Yikes! Kind of hard when I'm just getting 1-3 gold here and there, and the occasional 100 or so from looting of enemies when I'm doing contracts (without being over-encumbered). Of course, the rare enchanted items I find are nice - really expensive!
