Shouldn't Spain have more territry in the S. West US? The first expeditions into the S. West were very early. Now, IIRC, by the time the Russians started colonizing Alaska Spain had already secured all the way to San Francisco quite a long while before.

No, the first mission that eventually grew into the city of San Francisco wasn't even founded until 1776 in OTL.

It was okay. They sort of edited the end to make it more palatable. Henry Fonda and John Carradine are excellent, though.

San Francisco may not be appropriate for Spain to control at this point in time, but much of California and the South West should be in Spanish hands.

I don't think so. They only barely explored it, with expeditions of treasure hunters occasionally venturing north of Mexico to find rumored gold. The Missions brought in the real settlements, and those were first built in the late 18th century.

However, the world *is* more advanced at this point in time.

Being more advanced does not mean putting up Missions earlier. The Spanish crown sent expeditions to Alta california also because of the Russian threat which presented itself in Alaska. In this TL, there is no russian threat, and no pressure on the Spanish crown to send more expeditions northwards.

Other pressures, perhaps simply for extra resources, do (and did) exist, though.

In the South West US, I am not sure about California, the area was useful to the Spanish because of First National (Native American) labor. While you can not expect real cities to have grown up in the area, the Spanish most certainly did control the South West, and I believe southern California. I mean, the French colonies were very sparsely populated, but they are shown as being controled.

If you take a look at the map, they DO control the southwest and southern california. Any more north would be unrealistic though.

Also, California was more useful than the Southwest. The southwest's harsher climate and more volatile tribes made it a less desirable location to set up settlements and/or send expeditions.
