Okay to the British, Francis Drake was a great Sea Hero who pillage the Spanish Colonies for gold and stop the Spanish Armada, twice. And I know the Brits are really proud of him but i want to know what the Spanish think of him? So, if there is anyone who is spanish or had a spanish-history education, can you tell me what the history books say about Francis?

Also if there is any French, how about Horatio Nelson and the Duke of Welligton

Strange question... Drake? Not very important in Spanish history, most people dont even know who this guy was. About history books, he is seen basically as a mere but succesful pirate and slave trader at his first years with several failures at "official " missions in his curriculum, and a compulsive liar. A curious personage to be considered a national hero. Of course not in the same league as Nelson.

So then you think it is weird he is a english hero?

And why not the same as nelson

First becuase while Nelson fought face to face against similar forces, Drake speciality was basically piratery or surprisse attack on weakly garrisoned cities. Second, becuase while Nelson was a brilliant militar who won important battles, Drake victories were much less important and his failures are huge and VERY numerous (of course this part is conveniently not very known in UK :cute: ). And third becuase Drake was a ridiculous megalomaniac. So i find offensive for Nelson to compare him with Drake.

I should think most British people haven't got the faintest idea who Drake was or what he did, and of those who know, even fewer would regard him as a hero.

Probably most British people don't know who Nelson was either. The main reason his name is popularly remembered (to the extent that it is, which isn't much) is because he's the chap on top of Nelson's Column.

That's probably true, and to be quite honest, I think someone like Beckham is probably a more worthy hero than someone like Drake or Nelson. They killed or robbed people for a living - the worst thing Beckham's ever done is put his hair into cornrows.

A national hero someone who cries when England lose and lies to his son because he's ashamed of not being on a sports team any more, or someone who maintained absolute composure even at the end of his life, and masterminded one of the most famous victories (and quite a useful one too) in our history?

Oh goodness, it's a tricky decision isn't it?

Bhwaaahahahahaha

Military sucess, especially at a time when the nation is either under direct threat or percieved to be is always a good way to earn hero status. Frankly I don't buy the notion that being in the armed forces means you're automatically disqualified either. It would be more accurate to say after all that Nelson killed enemies of Britain in defense of its policies rather than make him sound like some sort of mass murderer.

Besides you really have to question the judgement of your choice. He married an ex Spice Girl and used to play for Manchester United!

Then, Jamie Oliver?

Oh yes, the topic. Perhaps a better candidate for discussion in the dubious hero bracket with Drake would be Walter Raleigh.

Well, Victoria Adams was the sexiest Spice Girl, at least back then. Causa finita est.

Looks is no garuntee of talent or intelligence ;)

Now returning you to the topic.

I believe I made some points about the topic above the bit about Beckham :p

Oh come on, Lord Nelson is MY national hero, and I'm not even English!

same here, and I'm not Brittish either. Nelson was the Hannabal of the Sea's, in the respect that he took on bigger and badder foes and WON!
