It’s as predictable as the change of seasons: even before shopping malls start playing Christmas muzak, Religious Right leaders and pundits like Bill O’Reilly are fulminating about the supposed “War on Christmas” and how retailers who choose to wish all their customers a “happy holidays” are part of an evil plot to purge Christianity from Christmas and American culture.

So we’re looking forward to the Liberty Counsel screed against Republican presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich, whose busy self-promotional Gingrich Productions has just sent a “Holiday Dash” email encouraging people to buy one of Newt’s books. No mention of Christmas, no Nativity scenes, secular winter snowflake background – definitely “naughty” according to the Liberty Counsel’s criteria. In fact, it looks a lot like a Walgreen’s ad whose “happy holidays” theme was sinister enough to encourage the American Family Association to call for a boycott.

It's a good thing we are going to pass a law that will allow President Obama to indefinitely detain Americans at war with America. This is a serious attack on the very Christian foundations of our great country. This isn't a mere coal-in-the-stocking offense - waterboarding is certainly called for (though we shouldn't go so far as to torture Newt). We should also look at who Newt has been pal-ing around with lately. Perhaps Newt will give out names for the naughty side of our national naughty or nice list.

Newt better be careful - America is arming itself for this year's War on Christmas:

Data derived from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) shows that November 25, 2011, Black Friday, had the most background checks for firearm purchases in a single day (129,166) with a 32 percent increase over the previous NICS high (November 28, 2008).

A well-armed, well-regulated militia is good any time of year. :)

A wall of seperation between church and statist?

Let's all agree to dispense with the term "statist" because it has just as much meaningfulness and validity as calling everyone who disagrees with you a fascist or a socialist, except less, because statist literally doesn't mean anything.

Why? It's not like they're going to revolt, give them bread, sex and 250 TV channels and they're fine...

(1.) You're thinking about the comment too much. Just try to enjoy it for what it is. :)

(2.) Gingrich is among the most fascistic/socialistic candidates in the GOP field. I stand by the comment.

That's more sex and 180 more channels than I have. Maybe I should join a militia.

...and Godfather's pizza.

Especially in Mexico. If there is one country that needs more well-armed militias, it's Mexico.

"The Gingrich that Stole Christams" - that's hilarious JR!

That said, some people don't like change - and some do. There certainly has been a concerted effort to water down sacred imagry in recent years. And some are offended. When we went to parent-teacher conferences and christmass concerts in recent years, the Christ child and angels are out - witches and goblins and Obamas are OK though.

Why do you need that in a school? If believers want that imagery, it is still available in their tax-free houses of worship.

While I firmly believe in the separation of Church and State, I was pointing out the incongruity that witches are acceptable and angels are not. Double standards.

How about churches? Is there a double standard there in regards to witches and angels?

Not at all. In the Church there is a clear rejection of Satan and all his works, including the seduction and manipulation of witches.

It's like you're asking if there's a double standard between how we treat doctors and murderers. We do treat them differently, but in this case it's deserved and not a double standard.

Angels can be fairly seductive and manipulative too, according to accounts in the Bible.

That might be a sensible charge if the witches are of the Wiccan kind or something. Considering they're probably of the fantastic kind, this makes as much sense as saying that Santa Claus is a religious icon or that the Wizard of Oz is a religious tale.

Satan seduces and manipulates witches? Then churches should care for the witches of the world, I say.

O'Reilly is fighting on the wrong front.
Why can't these people notice that Christmas never was the chief religious holiday in December in this country. If there's a war on Christmas it's coming from the Mammonites.
