The many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XV

Could have been the original BS series that aired around 1980 or so. Do you have a date for the picture?

Sometime in 1979. Id put it between maybe September and December.

Looks like original BSG.

I think it could actually be someone's house, designed to look ridiculously futuristic just for fun. That appears to be a driveway there. Someone with a lot of money to burn...

Either that or as already suggested, a film set. The fact it appears to be in the desert would be consistent with a sci-fi movie set respresenting some barren moon or planet.

EDIT: Should have read the next page, looks like we've got some consensus it's from BSG.

If a co-joined twin was convicted of a crime where only one of the twins was responsible how could they punish one twin without disturbing the liberties of the innocent twin?

This is assuming they cannot be separated by surgery without causing death.

Is it true that "whoan oot deen I" is very bad Cantonese for "Please pass the bacon"?

What's the trend with console games being transformed into PC games?

I took a look at the wikipage of Red Dead Redemption, and it looks like it isn't going to be published on PC (it was said in the discussion page).

Are the games in the future going to be more for consoles exclusively, and if so, why? To me it sounds stupid, since PC is a multipurpose tool after all.

Well there I live there's about 100x more console games than PC games. Which is a real frustration because I refuse to use any modern consoles.

Think of it from a developer's perspective: consoles are standardized hardware platforms with specs that are consistent across all units. You don't have to worry about your product's system requirements. Developing a game for a console means there is no such thing as outdated hardware, software incompatibilities, driver conflicts, network problems, or different operating systems. Your customers buy your product, they put a disc in their drive, and it works - period. (Not that consoles are infallible, of course - but from a software development perspective, it's a FAR more stable, consistent platform.)

That doesn't mean all games will move to consoles and PC gaming will die, but those are some of the advantages to developing for a console. Consoles are also relatively cheap, easy to buy, easy to set up, and easy for everyone to use regardless of their technical skills.

Well yes, it makes sense from their point of view to at least do the development on the consoles, although I'd guess it's not that expensive just to port the existing games to PC (I know next to nothing about it though).

Also, one could think that this is odd development, since the computers have become more similar with Java, Windows dominance, Wine on Linux etc. I mean: wouldn't it make more sense, if the games fr PCs would have never even existed than that there existed more of them when the computers were more diverse?

Personally I like PC more: the interface etc, and most of all because I don't like to buy a different thing for every purpose. I can justify to myself spending 300 e upgrading computer, but buying a whole new item for just playing requires more mental effort.

I do not need 4 GB of RAM to run a browser or create documents.

But you can't create documents with Wii either, and that's the whole point. ;)

Except nobody buys a Wii to create documents. And I'd be lucky to buy an up-to-date gaming computer for the price of a Wii, which would probably cover only the occasional yearly upgrade. If someone's interested only in gaming, there's no sense buying an expensive computer for games you can play well on a console. I don't have to buy a new Xbox every year just to play the latest games, now do I?

Porting from one hardware platform to another isn't necessarily that easy, especially going to PC from console. Again, the PC market is very fragmented with different hardware, software, operating systems, drivers, etc. None of that goes away just because you originally developed for a console.

I'm not sure I understand your comment here, but I think the difference then versus now is that historically there was a greater discrepancy between consoles and computers. That's not really the case anymore, generally speaking.

I understand that it can be frustrating for PC users, but nobody is saying you shouldn't own a PC or can't play games on a PC. Just that the industry trend has been moving toward more development on consoles, because they are comparable to PCs, cheaper and easier to develop games for, and easily accessible even to users with zero technical expertise.

I personally own both a PC and a console and I play games on both. I have to own a PC; that's not an option. I don't have to own a console, but I'd miss out on a lot of great games if I didn't.

Well yes, I guess I'll just have to swallow it. I'm asking this for a practical reason actually: I'm at the moment investigating the ways and price of upgrading my PC, and was thinking if it would be better just to invest in console instead. I'd rather not, but some of those games are very tempting: Red dead dawn and LA Noire for example

Well there's many kinds of computer users. I've had only two in my life time (I don't count Commodore 64 in here, since it wasn't technically mine, and I doubt whether it can be called computer either). My current computer is five years old, and I've bought 1 GB RAM and a 30 euro video card for it. I've mostly played older games and I have no trouble waiting couple years before buying a new game. Rome Total War or GTA San Andreas are as fresh as they can be for me, since I have no better games to compare them to.

From this point of view PC gaming makes quite much sense: I'm investing less to upgrading than most people who don't even play.

....Coffee is only a mild laxative, it's a much stronger diuretic. There's one chemical that causes this: caffeine. When caffeine is metabolized it produces three chemicals; paraxanthine, theobromine, and theophylline. These are the ones that cause the sweet sweet effects of caffeine. Theophylline is the smooth muscle relaxor, and since your bowels are smooth muscles, there you go! There's not much theophylline in caffeine compared to the other compounds, so it's not a very strong laxative feeling. Coffee drinkers feel it more, since they do tend to take in more caffeine than tea drinkers, although if you put back enough black tea, you'll see the effect just as well. Like most chemicals, your tolerance for theophylline increases the more caffeine you metabolize...

After drinking coffee why do I always need to drop a deuce?

Are you sure it's not just the time you're drinking the coffee?

Yes, from that point of view. But weren't we arguing about the current trends by these companies? You are not part of their main market. I am characterizing their main market.
