The NRA is getting involved in children's entertainment

This is the stupidest thing I've seen recently:

Using a jarring image to blast increased diversity on a children's TV show, a National Rifle Association online show depicted characters from "Thomas & Friends" in white, Ku Klux Klan-style hoods on burning train tracks.

Host of NRA TV's "Relentless," Dana Loesch went after the classic children's character Thomas The Tank Engine after its maker, Mattel, joined forces with the United Nations in efforts to increase gender diversity and representation on the program and include new characters from around the globe.

Loesch, a conservative spokeswomen for the gun rights group, specifically called out one new character – Nia, a steam engine from Kenya.

"That's where it gets really strange to me," Loesch says on Friday's episode. "Am I to understand this entire time that Thomas and his trains were white? Because they all have gray faces. How do you bring ethnic diversity? I mean they had to paint what I guess they thought was some sort of African pattern on the side of Nia's engine."

The program cut to an image with three trains wearing white hoods and tracks on fire. "Fair, I get it," Loesch sarcastically says. "Thomas the Tank Engine has been a blight on race relations for far too long. Clearly this is overdue."

Is there anything that is off limits for the twisted idiots at the NRA?

Discuss...

The entire premise of the NRA propaganda machine is based on having no shame. I would say no, there is nothing that is off limits. They are an interesting, albeit horrific, organization. I met an NRA nut IRL once and it was not a pleasant experience. I feel sorry for the places in the US where the majority are card-carrying members.

What's there to discuss? Aside from Hero, there didn't really seem to be any/much overtly ethnicy stuff in Thomas. I guess you could say they were English-ish, and the narrow gauge trains were Welsh-ish but whatever.

Idiots are idiots, and painting with a wide brush is what they do. I like the guys and ladies I know in the NRA and am blessed with some of them as family. They'd probably find that a little funny and call the whole thing stupid. Yay infotainment.

The NRA is not what it was a few decades ago. Nominally it is a group that promotes safe firearms training. In practice it has been taken over by the racist and fascist far end of American politics. That and the money. Every time an American is shot and killed, NRA profits go up. So they've become an organization which promotes the shooting of Americans.

Personally I think the guy had the right idea who said that every adult African American should join the NRA, to take over their leadership and redirect it.

Really struggling to figure out what Thomas the Tank Engine has to do with, you know, rifles. It isn't like Thomas the Tank Engine was going to feature an armored train but then backed out.
Also, related:

Its good for the show to have diversity... I guess she thinks its political correctness slash multiculturalism and she's mocking the implication that the show's characters were actually white people instead of being trains. If thats Thomas next to Gustav I can see why he's considered an anthropomorphized "white" train.

I know, right? This is what is baffling me. What possible motive would the NRA have for criticizing a children's telly show? What difference does it make to them? And how does an innocuous train engine relate to guns and gun ownership?

If the NRA tries to change Thomas the Tank Engine I'll get grumpy. That was literally all I watched when I was three. I would get the VHS tapes from the library and at the time they had a limit of how many tapes one could check out. My mom jokes that I went through them so fast the librarians didn't bother reshelving them, they just created a "[Real Name] Pile" for me to pick through every other day.

Is Gustav cattle trucking through the night with RPoland? J

Fixed for J
This is just dumb like the entire outrage over Disney Frozen and how it promoted Lesbianism.

Because racial resentment/paranoia is irrevocably tied up in the American gun-obsession. So it was really only a matter of time before the transformation that cutlass mentions took place. Playing to this kind of nazi stuff is a good marketing pitch for them.

You gotta stop getting your news from HuffPost and ThinkProgress. It's turning you into a very uninformed person. There are actually a lot of black NRA members with an uptick in minorities joining specifically because the NRA itself is marketing to minorities now. Hell, the public face of the NRA right now is Colion Noir, a prominent black YouTuber who reviews various types of firearms. Kinda odd for an organization that supposedly hates black people would actively start marketing to them and even make a black man the public face of their organization don't you think?

So this idea you have in your head that the NRA doesn't want minorities and is actively trying to keep them out is patently false.

Good thing then that the comment you quoted didn't say any of the things you put into his mouth...

What it actually was about, was the NRA's explicit tactic to rile up fears, be quiet every time a black person gets killed for no good reason, which includes supporting views that black guys with guns were obviously criminals that were a threat and thus deserved to be killed, while showing completely the opposite behaviour when it comes to white people. There is a huge difference between how the NRA publically talks about incidents of white people and those of black people. They conjure up a storm of epic proportions as soon as it comes to some white weirdo supposedly getting his 2nd amendment rights infringed upon over some nonsensical stuff he pulled, yet do nothing of that sort when said weirdo happens to be black. They also show the same behaviour even when the black person happens to be much more responsible than the white guy was.

There is also a difference between having some sort of minor effort to appeal to minorities and making sure that you treat everyone the same. Far-right parties that are openly against migration or foreigners in general do tend to have some migrants and foreigners as party-member as well. Just like a party that openly tries to steal voting-rights of minorites do have some of said minorities even in somewhat significant roles (see the Republicans). Having a bunch of minority-members doesn't somehow mean that your treatment of minorities couldn't possibly be bad.

It has already been changed since you were three. That is what the NRA seem to be opposing. If you want to fight changes in this case you are on the same side as the NRA.

Who on earth thought the trains were racially white? Bizarro.

This is an interesting demonstration of how whiteness functions as the 'default' against which other things are measured

Its not that bizarre when a white (light grey?) face is attached to them, but apparently the show's producers thought so or they wouldn't have introduced other trains to better reflect the racial diversity of the audience.

They were drawn as grey by the original author, because steam trains are made of metal.

Edit: If you search google images for some of the old books, some of the faces are quite dark grey, and you can see other metallic parts of the engine chassis in the same colour.

The NRA need stop entertaining kids and start getting their 2nd Amendment rights restored. The signature gun rights cases (Heller, McDonald) have been used to defend infringements on youngsters having guns and the NRA has not put up much of a fight, if any. Their is no age exception in the text of the Constitution.

I guess what's happened is that the original creators were going for 'non-specified' with regards to the identification of the various characters. They decided to add identification, trying to make the world a better place, and then took pains to create a bit of diversity.

Unless NRAtv has a comedy sketch a la The Daily Show, I don't see why they'd even care. But I guess they do.

I dont think the Feds can outlaw guns for minors, that was and has been a state matter. The states would have their militias and age requirements and regulate guns among the population. The NRA can raise a stink but challenging state law is tougher than arguing the 2nd Amendment in federal court.
