FWIW, I fixed shin splints for myself by eliminating isolation calf exercises from my workout, and adding an exercise for the anterior tibialis (reverse calf raise.)
That merely stopped exercising your shins. You'd have been better off continuing your exercises - after a few days off to relieve the pain, of course - with a superior shoe, or perhaps a foot wrapping.

How do you take a body temperature without a thermometer? It was one of those electronic ones and it broke. It fell in the luckily, clean toilet. When I fished it out it wouldn't give temperatures anymore.

EDIT: Actually, what really happened was the cat knocked it off the counter and into the toilet. I'm really not that clumsy.

You can't take them accurately without a thermometre. The best you could do would be the old 'hand on the forehead to check if it's too hot' trick, which only works if your hand is at a normal body temperature.

do you have a kitchen thermometer?

No.

I ended up landing myself in the hospital, though. (This was several hours ago. I'm home now.) They gave us a cheap thermometer there.

EDIT: No, I didn't go to the hospital just for the thermometer. They gave it to me because they had to stick it ... someplace. Obviously I'm going to have to sterilize it before using it again.

Ok so I started running for two weeks fine - now my knees I think are wrecked
So my question is. What can I do to keep up the exercise which excludes running and strenous use of legs?
Drink more milk, especially at bed time.
I think I will definitly buy some good running shoes. Any good brands you recommend?
I recommend a running shop. No brand suits everyone. You should try on a number of pairs and decide what suits you best. Generally the shop staff will make you run in them, either on a treadmill with some fancy technology to analyse your gait, or at the least by watching you as you run up and down the street outside.

I used to destroy my knees every half-marathon I ran, but I was running in normal trainers. I got running shoes and they merely ached, and now I've a nice pair of running shoes and running doesn't do my knees in at all.

So with all the talk about running, what is it I'm doing wrong if I get pain in my lower calf while running?

In addition to what cheezy said, it may be your running style being slightly different but stretching well should stop it. Of course if you've got a strain you should leave it a few days.

I word "redneck" insult?
Yes - from wiki:
Redneck is a derogatory slang term to refer to a poor white Southern farmers in the United States.[1] It is similar in meaning to Cracker (especially in Georgia), Hillbilly (especially in Appalachia) and White trash (especially among blacks).[2]

Does anybody know of a program or website that can calculate international itineraries and/or give driving directions? I should mention that Google Maps and Yahoo Maps don't seem to be able to do it in Europe, with the exception of the most developed European countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, UK), and I'm mostly interested in the rest of Europe.

Some 4 years ago, I used to have Loxane Way Home Europe, and I loved it (used to give me the exact distances between the departure and destination points, as well as between any other points in between, directions accurate to the very traffic lights one would meet on the way, time approximation based on changeable settings, and details about all the cities reachable in between), but I left my copy of it in Romania, and it was already a couple of years old when I last used it - which is why I'm not sure how up-to-date it is right now.

I would prefer a freeware program/website, although it's not a disaster if isn't. :)
