So I know next to nothing about image editing / processing ...

I have a jpg that I would like to turn into a large poster for my apartment. At the shop, they told me the image needs to have at least 300 DPI for this. The jpg has 200 DPI. It seems to me I can increase the DPI, but then the image's print size goes down. I guess I can't just increase the DPI and then have them turn a tiny image into a large poster? Is there anything I can do if I can't find a higher DPI version of the image somewhere?
 
The image file only includes so much information. There's nothing else there. It cannot be increased in size without starting to look bad.
 
While Cutlass is not entirely correct (there are some good algorithms out there) that is the truth most of the time. Like Cutlass said, an image only has so much info in it. When you stretch it, the computer must fill in the missing pixels with some sort of info. Most do this by taking surrounding pixels and guessing a value roughly average to the surroundings. In reality the algorithms, even basic ones, are more complex, but we don't much care about that.

What is important is that if you don't have a good source image file, you wont have a good result. If you don't want a blurry or pixelated poster, I suggest finding a bigger source file.

On that topic, do you mind if I ask what the poster is of? You might be able to get someone to vectorize it for you, which would allow you to print it in pretty much any size. This will only work if the image is not too complex (who wants to spend 20 hours working on a free poster?)
 
Post whatever it is, and someone with a good grasp of Inkscape can try and vectorise it. Do the folks at the shop print .svgs?
 
What's the name of that type of skirt that's been common in the past year or so where the hemline is pulled together like there's a drawstring at the bottom?

They said it has to be jpg or png.

The image is a pretty well-known one ;) but I can't find a place here, online or offline, that sells it as a poster, so I thought I'd have it made myself. No idea if it's complex.

Bubble skirt. They've been stylish for a few years now, because a girl I know in New York bought one 2-3 years ago and was very happy about it, even though she looked silly.

Yeah, that's the one. And I agree they look silly. I was trying to describe it to someone, but couldn't think of the proper name for it.
 
How many girls are on CFC? Just wandering like how many % of people aren't boys, I'm guessing like 3%.
 
Chieftess, Bast, Aimee, Lucy, Valka and Diana are the only female posters I've seen post here whose names I remember. I remember when I was still a noob, there was one poster who was/is the girlfriend of another poster (she vehemently said "yes, I'm his girlfriend").

Forgive me if I've forgotten about anyone.

Of course. Women are happy to be fashonable, it doesn't amtter even when it's hideous, so long as it's fashion.
 
Some girls' legs should be kept out of sight. ;)
