The word we use in Parthnya for this is "pwnage."

Oooh, big bad HA army did some pwnage!

*mumbles incoherently about how crappy RTR is* :p

On a more serious note, what city is that?

Alexandria Herat, I believe. There were a few big battles, it might also have been Merv, or some city in Sogdiana.

I'd forgotten how great Horse Archers are, but I'm just now getting the Kataphractoi I needed so badly. I could end these battles so much quicker if my cavalry could actually charge worth a damn.

Anyway, it's impressive because I keep doing this against heavily armored and well-commanded phalangite armies.

I was using some skythikoi as placeholders to besiege a city in Stainless Steel (yeah, I know, not too terribly difficult...I just got M2TW a few days ago, sue me :p) when the rebel army elected to sally and try their mettle. The below is the result. Because I'm not really all talk.

ITS A TRAP!
I hate Rhodes. The AI never leaves its army in the city and instead leaves a 15-20 unit stack right outside, hidden in the one square of forest so that you can't see and don't have any inkling that it's there. This is especially bad when I'm hunting down the last city of the KH, all they've got is Rhodes, and they left their big stack sitting there while the rest of their country tumbled into oblivion off to the west.

Can someone explain to me how these factions are getting like 10+ full armies? Each settlement only gives one unit per turn, and mercenaries only go for like four units per four rounds or so.

never leave a full army to the AIs control (i had two horse archers who got killed but i had taken a wall and the stupid reinforcements line up behind another wall)

I was expecting to lose this battle; half my army was slingers and town militia. With that in mind:

Look at this.

like for transferring population from one city to another?

And as a garrison in cities what are under no threat for attack.
Not even those of us who are extremely concerned about upkeep do that.

My favorite garrison unit is probably the Europa Barbarorum nizagan eranshahr (Persian archer-spearmen), because a city with stone walls at minimum, plus a few units of those guys, is virtually impregnable. Dual-role units like those are awesome. If necessary, in frontline cities they can be leavened with detachments of pantodapoi phalangitai (the cheapest variant of Macedonian-style phalanx spearmen in the East).

There are only a few multi-role infantry in RTR I can think of; Indian Infantry, the Germanic archer unit, and Theurophoroi (because they're good enough to serve as reliable infantry in addition to be fast enough to be skirmishers), but that's about it. I generally use mercenary slingers or warbands to garrison cities because they're cheap.
