The Sumerian Empire

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I hope you understood that I will be doing an update this weekend, but the smackdown on 'ol Caesar will take place a little later in the game.;)

I do. Hopefully, it will happen by page 20.

I'm going to try(let's hope I have time) to post a couple of back-to-back updates on sunday that will bring things close to the end of the medieval age. I have played into the beginning of the industrial age and hope to end all this before the modern age.

1080 A.D.
A state of war has existed between Sumeria and Rome since 703 A.D., with no ground gained for either side. For a great deal of that time an alliance has tied Sumeria and the Carthaginians together against the Romans. Hannibal's armies have kept the numerous Roman forces at bay and they have taken quite a beating for it. King Gudea has chosen not to continue the alliance and to leave Carthage to fend for itself.
Foreign Advisor- Your Excellency, now that our alliance has ended with Carthage, would you like me to contact Caesar?
King Gudea- Yes, I'm sure he will be willing to talk, seeing how his piles of legionaries are almost gone.

s413-mercs_last_stand.jpg

King Gudea- Maybe they would have lasted longer if I had let them wear their armor, instead of wearing barbarian furs.
Military Advisor- One good thing is you won't have to pay them the other half of the gold payment.
King Gudea- A lot of gold was save with their demise. Any other mercenaries will probably not be willing to work for us, knowing the situation we put these particular ones in.

Science Advisor- Sir, we are quickly losing ground in the knowledge arena. Arabia has had many scientific breakthroughs in recent years and is very advanced when compared to us. But, they do not yet have working knowledge of gunpowder, though they have recently been looking into it. Abu Bakr's scientists have taken the knowledge of Astronomy, applied it to sailing and have learned to navigate the wide ocean. Also, the whole Arabian empire is generating a lot of gold with their study into economics.
King Gudea- I had heard from the foreign advisor that Arabia, Egypt and Rome have been trading several technologies back and forth. Just didn't know any details on what was being traded. If you and your buddies can manage a breakthru on gunpowder, then maybe we can trade it for some of this other knowledge.
Science Advisor- We have a few more kinks to work out, on a device we have been working on. Once it is working properly, we should have an excellent defensive weapon.
King Gudea- I was hoping for an offensive weapon, but defending the Sumerian populace is always a good thing.

1150 to 1250 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Sir, an Egyptian scientist has introduced the theory that the sun is the center of the solar system and our world revolves around it. Also, an Arabic expedition claims to have circumnavigated the entire world and proven conclusively that it is round.

s436-gunpowder.jpg

The science advisor took King Gudea to a balcony, located off of the throne room. On the field outside the palace were several men, each holding what the science advisor had called a musket. The military advisor gave the men some instructions, then quickly joined those gathered on the balcony. The men on the field loaded their muskets and took aim at a scarecrow, that had been staged a short distance away. King Gudea flinched, as each musket went off with a bang and a large puff of smoke. Part of the arm and the head had been blown off the scarecrow. A large smile appeared on King Gudea's face.
King Gudea- Very impressive! But, is it only effective at short range?
Military Advisor- Once we become familiar with using it, the musket should be effective at longer ranges. There is much future potential in this device.
King Gudea- We should be able to get much in trade for this.
Military Advisor- What? We are going to give others access to this weapon?
King Gudea- Yes we are. For one, there are several discoveries out there we can trade for. Two, other nations will eventually gain this knowledge on their own. Three, we will feel a much greater sense of accomplishment by conquering an enemy with similar weapons to ours, than to slap down a weaker enemy with our superior weapons.
Military Advisor- I do not like it, but I see your point.

King Gudea- I want you to contact Arabia, Egypt and Rome to trade for any knowledge they have.
Foreign Advisor- It will be done, my King.

Later,
Foreign Advisor- Arabia was unwilling to trade anything for our musket. The Arabic scientists are apparently very close to perfecting their own version. We did gain quite a bit from Egypt and Rome.
s437-egypt_trade_gun.jpg

Science Advisor- Sir, the success that we have had with gunpowder is leading to interest in other compounds. My colleagues and I would like to explore chemistry thoroughly.
King Gudea- Your funding will be raised back to normal levels. You have definately earned it!
Science Advisor- Thank you, Great One!

1270 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Supreme One, the Black Death has returned! It appeared in the city of Kabir Forest and has quickly spread to other cities.
s446-black_death.jpg

King Gudea- With the empire being so large and all the trade between cities, there is probably no way to stop the spread. We can at least slow it down. Send out messengers to inform every city of the plague's return. For the time being, have them close their city gates to everything but shipments of food.

1275 A.D.
Military Advisor- Master, Arabia has captured over half of the Greek empire. Alexander had to retreat from Athens and moved his capital to Sparta.
s450-athens_captured.jpg

Military Advisor- I also learned from the foreign advisor that Arabic scientists have developed their own workable musket. Abu Bakr is quickly garnering much land, technology and power.
King Gudea- Alexander may not be up to stopping the enevitable. That's too bad!

1280 to 1300 A.D.
Over the next few years science advancement began to move more rapidly. The increased funding from King Gudea helped the Sumerian scientists move past their unsuccessful attempts at turning base metals into gold. They quickly accumulated an effective knowledge of chemistry and developed many chemical processes.
s451-chemistry.jpg

After that, they began to study the properties of metals in an effort to design harder and more durable metals. These new alloys helped to make more effective weapons that were stronger, lighter and cheaper.
s454-metallurgy.jpg

1305 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Sir, the Black Death has managed to spread, despite our efforts at trying to stop it. There are eighteen different cities affected by it and thousands have died, including one of our military units.
s458-knight_killed_by_black_death.jpg

King Gudea- I'm at a loss as to what to do. All these millions of people are looking to me for help and I can't stop it. More people are being lost to this virulent plague, than to all the wars we have been involved in.
Domestic Advisor- There have been reports of this deadly disease from around the world. Almost every nation has been affected by it.

The First Crusade

1120 A.D.
Military Advisor- Sir, the crusaders are ready to set sail. Here is a map showing their route and destination.
map-crusade.jpg

Military Advisor- A total of 8 crusaders units, an army general and 6 trebuchets have set out from Port Dabrum North. Against the wishes of the crusaders, I have sent along a sixth ship carrying 2 knight units and a pikeman unit. The crusaders wanted to go at it alone, but I convinced them that these extra units would just protect the trebuchets, while all the crusaders did the actual fighting.
s409-1st_crusade.jpg

1150 A.D.
Military Advisor- With the crusader fleet about halfway across the sea, this is a welcome message.
s414-rome_egypot_vs_baba.jpg

King Gudea- The Romans are on that island with Babylon, aren't they? That will take some heat off the crusaders.

1160 A.D.
Military Advisor- With the island nearly in sight, a terrible storm has hit the fleet with gale-force winds. Unfortunately, the ship that I had sent along was swept off-course. I did not have time to assemble a full crew complement and the captain was inexperianced at sea travel. The storm blew the ship into the deep ocean waters, it was swamped by large waves and the ship sunk with all hands on board. I take full responsibilty!
s416-caravel_lost.jpg

King Gudea- Don't be so hard on yourself. You had good intentions.

1170 A.D.
Military Advisor- When the ships made landfall, the disembarking crusaders had to immediately hold off a War Elephant attack.
s417-ships_offload.jpg

1190 to 1300 A.D.
Military Advisor- The crusaders have razed three Babylonian cities, while the Romans have captured two.
island-east.jpg

Military Advisor- The Babylonian capital has been left all alone on the other side of the island. The foreign advisor informed me the Romans made peace with Babylon, so the crusaders need to get over there to raze it. Shall we get a right-of-passage with Rome?
s457-path_to_khorsabad.jpg

King Gudea- Yes, you can sign us up for one, but it needs to end as soon as possible. No time extensions to the treaty.
s456-rop_w_rome.jpg

1330 A.D.
Military Advisor- The crusader army has arrived at Khorsabad and the Babylonian city is reeling from the Black Death. With so many deaths in the city, there is a minimal garrison.
s461-crusaders_at_khorsabad.jpg

1340 A.D.
Military Advisor- The crusaders have captured Khorsabad and have renamed it Bastion. They are going to build up defenses there and await new orders.
s465-khorsabad_captured.jpg

Military Advisor- Hammurabi was found dead in his chambers, a victim of the plague.
King Gudea- Well done! One down and ten to go!
Military Advisor- Another thing, we did not lose a single military unit during the crusade, except for those lost at sea.

The First Crusade! Hooorah!!! Woot Woot WoOt!!

I kinda got carried away there. When's the second crusade?

I'd take out the ottomans now, or mabey the hittites.

The Ottomans have only 1 city, so are not a priority. The Hittites entire empire is on two islands and I'm not up to doing a sea-borne invasion right now. The Egyptians might very well be next.

Well, history said 4 crusades happened.

There could be one more crusade at most, since the crusaders may very well fall in a hail of bullets-if you know what I mean.

Nice sailing there.

It was the military advisor's fault! He admitted to it. Yes he did.:D

Who is your military advisor? Is it your finger on the keyboard or on the mouse?

To be honest, it was done on purpose as part of the story. Just thought it would be cool to have this big fleet/expedition going somewhere and one of the ships gets blown off course and is lost at sea.:)

Wow! I see your dedication to the story is impressive, indeed. My mistake.

Great story, too!:goodjob:

Sorry, I didn't intend to stay away this long. I got really burned out and took a break from doing this, got into a couple of games that I had shelved a while back and kinda of forgot about this. There was an update that I almost had done about the time that I felt all tapped out. I will dig up those notes and try to post it this weekend. Adding the little bit of 'elaboration' to this game just pushes me to the limit, cause I'm not good at storytelling. Doing a straight gamelog is so much easier cause all you do it report what has happened. Thinking up all the things that Gudea and his advisors say takes me a long time and I run out of ideas pretty easily. If during the rest of this game the 'storytelling' gets a little thin, then I apologize. Whether the second half of this story will have a similar style to the first half, or if it will be a lot closer to a gamelog- I don't know. But, I will attempt to finish it out either way. Again, sorry to anyone that may have been following this.
