The thread for space cadets!

Tonight, Jupiter and Saturn are in conjunction and are as close to each other in the sky as they have been in 600 years. They are calling it the "Christmas Star" and it is really quite brilliant and obvious. I thought I'd have to search for it in the sky but I merely looked in the right direction and it popped out at me, despite being next to a streetlight from my vantage point. Go out and see this once in a lifetime conjunction! (they do say it will happen again in 60 years but then will be several centuries after that)

I was thinking it would be hard to see too, but considering Jupiter is something like the third brightest object in the night sky, I guess it's not too surprising it was easy to see.

Japan developing wooden satellites to cut space junk

A Japanese company and Kyoto University have joined forces to develop what they hope will be the world's first satellites made out of wood by 2023.

Sumitomo Forestry said it has started research on tree growth and the use of wood materials in space.

The partnership will begin experimenting with different types of wood in extreme environments on Earth.

Space junk is becoming an increasing problem as more satellites are launched into the atmosphere.

Wooden satellites would burn up without releasing harmful substances into the atmosphere or raining debris on the ground when they plunge back to Earth.

"We are very concerned with the fact that all the satellites which re-enter the Earth's atmosphere burn and create tiny alumina particles which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years," Takao Doi, a professor at Kyoto University and Japanese astronaut, told the BBC.

"Eventually it will affect the environment of the Earth."

"The next stage will be developing the engineering model of the satellite, then we will manufacture the flight model," Professor Doi added.

As an astronaut he visited the International Space Station in March 2008.

During this mission, he became the first person to throw a boomerang in space that had been specifically designed for use in microgravity.

Sumitomo Forestry, part of the Sumitomo Group, which was founded more than 400 years ago, said it would work on developing wooden materials highly resistant to temperature changes and sunlight.

The wood it is using is an "R&D secret" a spokesman for the company told the BBC.

Space junk
Experts have warned of the increasing threat of space junk falling to Earth, as more spacecraft and satellites are launched.

Satellites are increasingly being used for communication, television, navigation and weather forecasting. Space experts and researchers have been investigating different options to remove and reduce the space junk.

There are nearly 6,000 satellites circling Earth, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF). About 60% of them are defunct (space junk).

Research firm Euroconsult estimates that 990 satellites will be launched every year this decade, which means that by 2028, there could be 15,000 satellites in orbit.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has already launched more than 900 Starlink satellites and has plans to deploy thousands more.

Space junk travels at an incredibly fast speed of more than 22,300 mph, so can have cause considerable damage to any objects it hits.

In 2006 a tiny piece of space junk collided with the International Space Station, taking a chip out of the heavily reinforced window.

burns totally when falling to earth because obviously they will be taking them down .

Are we living in a sea of gravitational waves?

Astronomers might have spied their first hint of gravitational waves made by merging supermassive black holes. For more than a decade, the NANOGrav collaboration has been monitoring radio waves from 45 spinning stars, known as pulsars. Tiny deviations in the arrival times of the waves could reveal the cumulative ripples in space-time caused by merging supermassive black holes across the Universe. An analysis of more than 12 years of data shows preliminary evidence for the effect. The hints suggest “that we are bobbing in a sea of gravitational waves rippling from supermassive black hole mergers in galaxies across the universe”, says astrophysicist Julie Comerford.

Someone has completely misunderstood the problem of spacejunk there

Well, at least when (er, if) the wooden satellites deorbit they will definitely burn up on re-entry.

I would expect Japan to make origami satellites :)
Go radical green!
That is so last year, Red Greta! The UK have already appropriated that cultural icon...

Origami antenna springs up for small satellites
A novel helical antenna that sprang from a container the size of a tuna can is now operational in orbit. Developed by Oxford Space Systems in partnership with ESA, this origami-inspired antenna is equal in length to the shoebox-sized satellite hosting it, part of a growing constellation of nanosatellites providing Internet of Things services around the globe.

I dont have the article but a super Earth ~3x our mass has been found maybe 2-3 hundred light years away that orbits very closely to its sun and the surface is likely molten, but the planet is believed to be 10 billion years old. I think thats about the expected lifetime of our sun.

uh . And ugh , what a letdown . After a week of suspense with this blog telling ever more secret services of America flying helicopters over Los Angeles , because all the weirdos outta there fear BLACK helicopters , today they let it out that it's a man shaped inflated balloon , or like some s_x toy thing on commercial drone thing as a prank , because we also have expert American aviation declaration it can't be done ... Biden brings in all haters of Turks/lovers of Kurds even before getting into White House and Pentagon under a new boss cleans home front : There is no jetpack dude , North Koreans will not invade from fishing boats , flying in the last 50 miles !

What is StDr 56?

No one quite knows what this captivating object in the constellation of Triangulum is. StDr 56, named after the amateur astronomers Xavier Strottner and Marcel Drechler who found it, could be a planetary nebula, made up of expanding shells of gas ejected by a dying Sun-like star. Except that its long, thin filaments are hard to explain, as is its massive size, perhaps as large as 33 light years across. Astronomer Phil Plait is baffled and wants other professionals to make more detailed observations. “Just what is StDr 56? Besides jaw-droppingly gorgeous, I mean. Maybe we can find out,” he writes.

It’s about the same size as the full Moon in the sky.

after USAF monopolized SW with some lT crowd named the Kessel Run , the Space thing of American has established Section 31 to track satellites and Kobayashi Maru for something ı have already forgotten .

his mission is to fit the thing into mainstream . There is no guarantee that aliens might have 2x5 fingers on their manipulative appendages (with disregarding their moving appendages) and oh , how scientific talking ı look like , so the alien ship is not 10 times the length of its diameter . And it is a pancake , because flying saucers and the thing that it has 3 shifts in a day should be countered it is a just a solar sail of 1 milimeter thick , because like there is no guarantee the aliens originate from a planet that has a 24 hour day . Also we learned it is unmanned , sorry unalienned ... So , what should be the picture here ?

pancake ?

the flying pancake which created so many UFO legends and its service was not anything like this ?

or maybe a star , because Bumblebee and Optimus Prime and whole bunch of transformers were contorting in the garden in order not to be seen in the first Transformers movie ?

2 million pages of secret ClA documents made free so that nobody could find anything in it . Yeah , just a similar thing .

apologies for the consequtive posting thing but this happens to be a thing that should be nipped in the bud .

traitor Ropert has resigned . This being the guy brought in to fix the tactical aviation trainwreck slated to happen in the 2020s , slated to be fixed by the F-35 Footpad and currently caused by the F-35 Footpad . They have discovered flying old jets in service of no other [major] country is not that cheap , even as aggressors in air combat training , so as a parting shot he says they should buy drones . Now that the idiots who run the likes of USAF think they have all the aces in the sleeve , with the orcs lingering outside the realms of enlightened humanity only capable of launching hordes and the current set-up of Top Gun type stuff unable to provide such a realistic exercise . You WlLL NOT be seeing the enemy on your glorious radar sets the enemy supposedly can not notice , hence you will not be running 30:1 or 50:1 exchange ratios . The plan also supposedly includes shooting some of these drones for real . Traitor Ropert was unable to stop the very last executive order of Trump which bans purchase of drones from the enemies of America , with Trump vindictive about his fate and so on and so what . Ropert also suggests purchase of the same set of cheap drones , read something like second son-in-law of PM would love to start producing like on yesterday as a COlN supplement , now that US Special Forces types have gained their share of commissions from purchase of prop types they actually wouldn't want to support them in any peer conflict , because the props "definitely" can't . Signature wise , you know lacking Stealth and stuff that's fit for a thing that will fly against an air defence set up , bolstered in view of the coming drone stuff .

even better naturally follows . ln a move pre-arranged with the incoming Bidon the barrel Administration , they are trying to cut down F-35 production . Accordingly there are various statistics released that say F-35 has a mission capable rate of 60 odd to 30 or 40% , according to different setups , in contrast to 80% expected "these days" , meaning if you have 20 jets based in an airfield , you should be able to send 16 of them to war , like in the first day of a war . No full production orders for the Footpad given yet , because it has something like 817 things yet to be fixed , only 2 less than last year . They fixed dozens but new things came up , is the explanation . The gallant trolls naturally are out in full force to tell that ain't so but anyhow . They are also yet ignoring the issue . That Lockmart will be given new F-16 orders because the F-35 orders for American service is to be cut . No , they are still making a trillion dollars out of the entire programme by 2070 , but can not bring down individual costs to buy that many ... Accordingly the number is supposedly to be taken down from 1760 something to like 1055 or whatever . This you can also explain as linked to the defeat of Trump , but maybe you shouldn't . Because it would involve some obviously ridiculous r16 statement that America , the land of the brave anti-semite , has decided it is not a good time to press claims on a poll tax on the Jews with the expectation that they would be impressed by the threat of extinction because of lsraeli actions and stuff . Don't get used to lax r16 , me posting that much like on everyday , makes it harder to add the smalprint that you are not to bet on anything ı say .

accordingly there are those who are still ignoring the adage that silence is golden . Like proper behaviour to first time offenders , with reminding on how they can check lP adresses because they are still operating on a premise that people they heroically shut up might come back and gloat . Naturally am not that offended , nobody would like expect me to be the lead designer on the T-65 and people must make a living , but really ? And of course they are still topped by those Europeans who can not control themselves even in the presense of the company troll from New Turkey . Who is their friend , right ? As some new person on some forum tells how South Korea is supporting New Turkey even with tank engines and it is not rape , pillage and plunder , which any fool would assign to the newly debuted North Korean submarine nucular missile making their unification like even more costlier as American or Chinese pressure on Pyonyang becomes even more like dumber . Always , but always that second class races can not . Though no word on the 1800 hp tank diesel New Turkey would do , from any of the sides ... Apparently that's a dead end these days with electric drive being all the rage . (Current Tesla tech to drive a 1500 hp M-1 or Modern Armour in Civlll or whatever to its puny petrol based range would apparently need 33 tons of batteries ...) Not to worry , New Turkey will field a nuclear submarine in 2038 . Because they are somewhat behind the curve to fly the Qatari fighter jet in development in Ankara on the 100th Anniversary of the dead Republic as an insult , they are now angling for the 100 years of Kemal's country fielding an export U-boat ...

(the term traitor comes from future possibilities of Lockmart choosing to fight for that extra 700 F-35s)

Listen to all 50 gravitational waves detected

It is an embedded interactive chart, I cannot paste it here. It shows all 50 collisions of massive objects out in space, shown by size, distance and speed. You can listen to a noise that represents the wave, but it is not clear exactly what that means.

2 very different meteorite craters:

Karakul Lake in Tajikistan formed inside a meteorite impact crater

Villagers pose around the crater of a meteorite that landed in Bihar state, India, in 2019

They come from a nature article on what we can learn from chemical analysis of meteorites, but it reads to me as "science works" written in a long form.
