I'd actually already seen that, but I can't find any *definition* of it.
96% polyester and 4% elastane, convertible dress.
Ok. That's not weird.

You blame me for your voyeuristic habits? I… wait until I learn German well enough to insult you in a non-infractable way and then you'll see!

Question for people who've been in a lot of earthquakes:

do they make noise? like rocks rumbling? or is the only noise the sound of stuff on the surface getting smashed about?

I do not recall any rumbling that could be separated from the sound of the buildings I was inside of shaking. I haven't been outdoors during a perceptible one however

I hope I get to try the earthquake experience once. Mind you, not the ones where you get trapped under collapsing buildings and stuff. Just a mild rumple.

Or you can just go to a seedy motel with those coin-operated massage beds, or sit on top of a less-than-balanced washing machine.

No dice. It's gotta be real plate tectonics or nothing!

Sort of. Not noise in the traditional sense, but you feel the vibrations and the pressure. At least with the smaller earthquakes I've felt. I've never felt above a 5.

In my experience there's no sound at all. That's why they are so scary. Everything just moves, or looks slightly askew, and you get seasick. Except that you don't know when it's going to stop or whether it's going to get worse. The uncertainty makes you feel completely powerless, helpless.

I suppose that with earthquakes strong enough to cause visible damage you'd hear the rumbling of things breaking or falling. But then the noise is the least of your problems.
I googled them, looked at a few photos, and my conclusion is that they have to be among the ugliest pieces of clothing I've ever seen.
I think I agree.

Well, I won't wear one.

Why was Laforge a redshirt in the first season of TNG? What was his job function? I get he wasn't the chief engineer yet but everything he did was engineering related so I don't get why he was a red shirt at all.

Also could the actor see through the visor?

1. He was probably in the command track at the time (think of Sulu and Chekov in TOS; both of them eventually ended up in command roles - Captain and First Officer, respectively).

2. His function on the bridge was navigator, though that's not a term used in TNG. It was supposed to be a mark of TNG's modern enlightenment that the Enterprise could be steered by a blind man. I don't know how well the actor could see through the visor. It must have been an unsettling experience to have to move around the set with that thing over his eyes.

3. See #1. Lots of Starfleet officers start out in one track and later transfer to a different one, as they may gain new skills through formal training, on-the-job learning, or it may be the captain's policy to try some new crew in a variety of departments until they figure out where the person fits best. This was true in TOS, TNG, and Voyager (not sure about DS9; at least O'Brien moved up from Transporter Chief to the equivalent of Chief Engineer on the station).

As I understand it, the only time LeVar Burton couldn't see at all was when they put the white caps on his eyes, but I don't know how they managed that bit.
