The votes are in: Jesus wins

Wow weird I started reading this thread and my playlist shuffled randomely to "jesus walks" :p

Maybe the reason everyone knows about this guy, billions follow to some degree or another what he preached, and he has lasted thousands of years is because its the truth? It doesn't take a lot of faith when you look at the facts....

The argument from popularity is a logical fallacy. Full stop.

That's not what he said. He said that maybe the "message" (what he preached) has become popular and survived because it's true. (Maybe still full stop, but the complete opposite of your conclusion.)

Things do not have value because certain people, or a particular number of people believe them. People believe them because they have a certain value, or perceive to represent a certain truth.

I suppose it all depends on whether or not you agree with the Ingsoc principle that reality is only in your mind, that if you believe something happened, then it happened.

It's either Ingsoc (Neo-Bolshevism, Death Worship, whatever), or a concrete reality unaffected by what we think, one independent of those living in it.

It seems that's what's really being argued here, rather than the actual topic :mischief:

Interesting, Bozo, that you start a thread talking about how nobody believes what's written in the Bible, and then another thread talking about how everybody does...

You didn't know Bozo has a split personality? Sometimes the DP side of Bozo shows up.;)

People believe in Jesus but not most of Bible maybe?

Isn't that the thrust of the argument?

Not as I interpereted it. I thought it was more of a "hey, it's kinda cool that regardless as to whether or not what Jesus said is true, he made his point and a huge number of people believe it."

and then a whole bunch of people jumping on him for it

I could be wrong though...

There wouldn't be much discussion if people didn't point out flaws that they perceive.

exactly my point

that's the problem. Too many side arguments that spin off and don't tie into the argument

Actualy, I intended to mention that as soon as you replied

Things do not have value because certain people, or a particular number of people believe them. People believe them because they have a certain value, or perceive to represent a certain truth.
People attach a value to things or concepts and the value we attach is based on the perceived reality of the people at the time.

The majority of people during the 18th Century believed that slavery was right, but that did not make it so.

We are all God's children.
Nice thought. Unfortunately, it's not true, according to Jesus Himself:

John 8:42-44
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

Yeah 99% of humanity is going to hell for being born in the wrong century in the wrong country and under the wrong religion. I certainly don't want to go to heaven, they'll be no one interesting there. Just a load of self righteous people with some sort of superiority complex. Count me out. I'm going to hell thank you very much, where the best most humane people hang out :) Apparently anyone who doesn't agree with brand x is going to hell. Good luck with that.

Where is that stated in the scriptures? The more that is given the more that is required. Sodom wasn't judged by the law for example since it wasn't written yet (even though it was written in the human heart) but they were judged according to how they treat a stranger after the fact Abraham saved their butts a few years back. Yet those who reject the gospel (Christ)are more accountable those who were in Sodom. Thus everyone will get a fair trial.
