"Man", you see, is usually taken to refer to gender, while sex is denoted by "male" (although the imperfect nature of the English language often mean that the former is used as an adjective form of "man").

Intellectually, yes, although if I'm entirely honest I can't claim to have fully extracted the internalised transphobia that our culture so lovingly provides us with. I'd certainly like to think that I'd be fine with it, and would strive to be so open-minded.
Ah, but there's a difference between performing androgynous and performing male while doing something femme. "Real men" are men regardless of what they're doing or how they're dressed, because the identity is a self-defined performance, not a prescribed one, and "this is me because I say so" is infinitely more real than "I'll do what everyone else is doing".
