Thread to Report Issues with new xenForo version 2.2

I think the laugh react is great, tbh.
It's great when it's great. It's toxic when it's toxic. I don't want OT to become the cesspool of Facebook news article threads (or at least not go further in that direction).

It's already a cesspool. This just makes it a little more fun.

Okay, I will admit to using the "haha" (as it's called on FB) to mock people... on FB. There are some people with whom I interact there who really are that stupid, with making up "alternative facts" that are so easy to disprove, and ranting over some astoundingly dumb things.

I don't do that here. If I'm angry at someone, I will either say so in words, try to work it out in PM, report the post if I think it violates a rule, or put the person on ignore.

If I think a post is funny, I will use , :lmao:, or :rotfl: or possibly :mischief: or :p (whichever seems appropriate).

So I do agree that the FB-style "laugh" emoji isn't a good idea here. We have lots of alternatives for expressing friendly laughter, and unfriendly laughter has another term on this forum: it's called trolling.

FTR and FWIW, I quit using FaecesBook over 10 years ago, so I had no idea that this particular emoji was (mis)used that way over there.

So over here, I've basically been using it to mean "That made me laugh, thank-you", which for me is qualitatively better than the default basic "I liked this post" thumbs-up.

So... TIL, and I guess, I shouldn't use the laugh-reaction in future... :(

Well, there are several good laugh smileys. It just takes the extra step of using them in a post.

I basically ignored FB for many years (just the occasional birthday greetings with RL friends). But a couple of years ago when provincial politics started getting first frustrating and then critical to keep up with, I started reading and posting on my MLA's page.

Then other stuff happened, which led to a few political groups, and now FB is part of the daily routine. It has to be, since we have cabinet ministers who love making announcements late on Friday afternoons, either on Twitter or FB. I don't do Twitter.

Nono ok so - it's used for both. You've used it in the intended way. People can tell if you used laugh for something funny. But it can ALSO be used as a dislike button and a very toxic one at that. Which is already creeping up in OT.

It requires context, and I'm very, very sure the people you reacted to understand what you meant, since they have the context!

My argument is that when it is inevitably used as a worse dislike button, it's very, very tough for moderators to understand the picture, and I think just allowing it as a pseudodislike isn't a good call either.

But yea, really: you're probably good!

I echo Angst. It is absolutely being used that way, and it is pretty upsetting when it is done. It's not like older iterations where someone had to manually, personally troll you and you had the opportunity respond or report in kind. Now you look like an obsessive person if you bring it up, because, while the message is very clear, the communication is nonverbal. This was already a problem previously under the original likes system: OT is now a subforum of very strongly sorted cliques whose distribution is extremely obvious from who likes what posts. But the new software now gives a means to directly antagonize across cliques, which can only make things worse.

It's also a very good way to do a subtle PDMA though, so at least there's that.

I recall that there was a discussion as to whether "liking" a post containing mod text constitutes PDMA.

There are so many ways to manipulate the argument over this and the use of emojis... if it were possible to trace the timestamps of every element of such posts, it would be possible to tell if the "like"/emoji occurred before or after the mod text was added.

This is true. The plain ‘like’ button already had a possibility for sarcasm that made it quite pointless because only the sender of that message could know for certain what happened. With the added fa(e)ces it's just added confusion.

It's why I rarely use the function. If I want to express something I have posts. Even if I want to troll somebody, I prefer the personal touch of the artist.

As a separate issue from the above, what's the definitive answer on the destructive dumbing down of the subscriptions page?

Regarding the reactions: We have been discussing various things, most not yet decided.
What we decided though was that we should not let dicks prevent us using this feature.
If you notice such a trolling reaction, then please report. We can delete reactions, and ultimately we can revoke also the right to use reactions for specific users. Therefore reporting is extra important, do that we can identify repeat offenders.

Imo the haha & love smilies (i still prefer that word over emoji) look somewhat childish.
While i think CFC has a more mature audience than sites where such smilies are used.
In short..they are not fitting and should be reconsidered.

As mentioned before, this is a “feature“, not a bug :/.

@tjs282 please check the sub.

(sorry, I couldn't resist... :mischief:)

It's better than it was. :yup:

I much prefer to call them smileys. Once upon a dozen years ago I belonged to a smiley forum. The archive there had over 10,000 smileys, made by various artists, and we were constantly encouraged to make more, experiment, post ideas, and could make custom requests.

But the reaction emojis aren't the same. They serve different purposes and are very different styles.

Sad to hear that, but no Biggie.

Yes, they are enabled. Maybe I need to reinstall Chrome or something.

Yes. They could be useful when writing long Posts, and having all the Civ6 yields, combat...etc. Icons as Smileys would help making Posts more friendlier to read and stay thematic with the Game (instead of having to use the Civ5 ones - I'm planning to have all the explanations and details of the 4XP Features (more infos in my signature) here on CFC, so would be very useful for me).

Thanks for the quick answers!

Yeah, I guess we should discuss the smileys again .
See:
-Dunno if the attached set covers what-all @Zegangani is looking for -and they're probably too large as is- but leaderheads DO see some use, in my experience, and I could probably be talked into a little more work, if I thought they'd see use...

Not gonna reread thru 20 pages so sorry if this is a repeat.
I agree that the love smilie looks ridic and should just be a heart and that the lol smilie is a bit over the top.
That said, this seems like a universal problem with the direction emojis have taken, and I'm sure many civ 6 players enjoy cartoonish graphics
Personally I despise the expanded emoji list. Kinda loses the character of the limited but long-term emojis we have. The vast majority of them are completely useless (EVERY FLAG OF THE WORLD?) not to mention some are.... problematic
🖕💋👅🗣️👙🍆💦🌬️♋
Take it with a grain of salt though, I'm the type of person who hasn't upgraded my iphone in 10 years.

We have a middle finger smiley?:rotfl:
Also, the smilies seem more finicky to work with. Like certain ones don't always appear on the same line, they go down to the next line even though i'm trying to put them beside each other.

Alright - I trust you guys know what you're doing. I'll try and report things then!

The Civ 5 Smileys are nice actually, but there are a lot of Civ 6 Stuff that have their own Unique Icons (not covered in CFC's set of Smileys) + It would be nice to have a Unique set of Civ6 Icons/Smileys (finally after 6 years since its release) which fit together design wise as well as thematically in a Civ6 Post.

And yes, Leaderhead Smileys are very popular, especially on the Civ Discord Servers, the cartoony Civ6 ones can be very expressive.

--------------------
I can easily provide the individual Textures of the Civ6 Icons (cut and ready) if you want some help with that. Just tell me the size, resolution and format needed (and the limit of how much you can add, if there is one). I would certainly be happy to help implementing the Civ6 roster of Icons (most of them if it was up to me lol).
