I'm interested in following this story to find out if indeed the relationship began when the young man was 16 (in which case it is child rape)

Dude wut. Child rape and statuatory rape with an otherwise consenting older teenager are two very very different terms. Maybe I missed something in the article but "child rape" carries a very different connotation than what possible things transpired.

At the time I wrote that many details were unknown. The legal definition of what counts as child rape varies by jurisdiction and at the time I didn't know where this happened (though I didn't qualify my statement to reflect that).

In any case this always raises the thorny question of what people think is acceptable. It is possible to have consensual sex with a 13 year old which many would see as child rape regardless of consent. But those same people might think consensual sex with a 15 year old is ok. It's a matter of opinion and law.

There is also the nitty gritty of human sexual maturity and hormones, which develop quite naturally before social maturity in many cases - social maturity itself being overrated in its influence over one of our most basic instincts all too often.

It shouldn't matter what they are in their personal lives. But very young children shouldn't be exposed to homosexuality, so if they can keep their personal life away from the children they are working with, its fine.

I think it was actually a telephone chat line, probably for hook-ups. I think the article said it was 1993.

AOL and Prodigy existed in 1993. They were on the internet yet to my knowledge (though I suppose they may have had email gateways, I just don't remember), but they had discussion groups. Also, there were BBS systems all over the place, many of which were connected to FidoNet, and even if not hooked up to Fido still had local discussion groups right on that local BBS itself.

In short, what I am trying to say here is that online activity existed before the internet made its huge explosion.

Yes I remember it, but back around 1994/95 I still only knew one person who had AOL, I think it's more likely it was a telephone chat line.
