TIL: Today I Learned

Kinda like how I felt, I suppose, when back in the 90s I shockingly saw a Star Trek TOS episode I'd never seen before. Or was it early 2000s? No, I think 90s...

I still remember a night back in the early 2000s when I saw a new TNG episode after having seen every other episode at least three or four times on rerun. I don't know how I missed it the first time. Or second, or third... :)

One word.

Netflix.

That is all.

I was going to say that Netflix wasn't around back then, but TIL Netflix was founded in 1997. Never knew about it back then, though.

I was thinking you could use it now and make sure you indeed have gotten them all.

As to Amazon Prime...there's a difference?

free two day shipping

Indeed. I've had Prime far longer than they've offered the video streaming with Prime membership. Got it for the shipping, so I consider the streaming of tv shows, movies, and now music as totally free perks since I'd have it for the shipping regardless.

50+ lb laser printer? Sure thing, two days, bam, free shipping! AND best price for the printer I could find as well.

TIL the Humboldt Current is a thing. It's basically like an anti-Gulf Stream for western South America. Nice, cold water all up and down the coast.

TIL the Humboldt current is not where I thought it was. That would be the California current.

There is cold water up and down the west coast of all the continents, by the way. And something like the gulf stream on the east coasts.

TIL this about Queen:

She once woke up to find a stalker in her bedroom.
On July 9, 1982, a 31-year-old psychiatric patient named Michael Fagan scaled a Buckingham Palace drainpipe and sauntered into Elizabeth’s chambers. The sleeping monarch awoke to find a strange man perched on the edge of her bed, dripping blood from where he had cut his hand while wandering the palace’s dark corridors. Initially unable to reach the police, Elizabeth engaged Fagan in conversation for at least 10 minutes, listening to him chat about his personal problems and relationship with his four children. Finally, a footman roused from his slumber seized the loquacious intruder. It turned out that Fagan, who was ordered to spend six months in a mental hospital, had also crept into the royal residence weeks earlier, making off with a bottle of Prince Charles’ white wine.

The Queen certainly knows how to talk to people.

The Queen certainly knows how to talk to people.

It is getting more interesting:

Fagan entered the palace through an unlocked window on the roof and spent the next half hour eating cheddar cheese and crackers and wandering around. He tripped several alarms, but they were faulty. He viewed the royal portraits and rested on the throne for a while. He then entered the postroom, where Diana, Princess of Wales had hidden presents for her first son, William. Fagan drank half a bottle of white wine before becoming tired and leaving.

I knew of the incident, but not of those specific details. I wonder if anyone (or everyone!) on the palace security team lost their jobs because of the affair.

TIL that the historian Charles Beard was in fact shamefully naked-faced.

That reminds me of the story that the Victorian intellectual John Ruskin was so disgusted by his wife's profusion of hair in the nether-region that he refused to have congress with her again.

TIL Louisiana came under Spanish rule for a time before coming under American control.
