Tipping at an Indian resturant

I think what percent you tip varies from region to region, so what would be standard in one place wouldn't be somewhere else.

I stopped dining at the resturants in my town because a majority of the waiters were people in high school who were downright rude. And do high schoolers really need so much money? I doubt they're the breadwinners of their households. But my main problem is the rudeness. And being made to feel obligated to tip poor service is rude in itself. That's exactly what they do and why I stopped eating out.

And to tie some loose ends, I ask, where does it stop? Do you tip the guy who puts gas in your car? When you're on the parkway, do you tip the person at the toll booth? Do you give President Bush a tip??? He, if anyone, really deserves something special for the great things he has done for this country.

I see the problem already. You're eating at crap restaurants. Don't go to Olive Garden. Eat some real Italian and believe me you'll be happier with the service, food and ambience.

It's not the number of times someone shows up it's the whole experience. Did they make you wait too long then make them aware. Heck you may get comped.

One more thing don't ever buy a beer from a beer vendor at a ballgame cuz you won't see that guy ever again. I start every year giving the regular beer vendor at the Sox and Cubs games a $20 right off the bat. I get free beers all year long and I continue to pay him well. It's a symbiotic relationship. What comes around goes around. Don't have such bad karma this early in life ew0054.

No one puts gas in anyones cars anymore; they are all self service.
Whats a parkway?
Hell no, President Bush doesnt deserve crap from me. Great things? Where have you been the past 5 years?

The people who are waiters are bringing you your food, drinks, and providing you service. If you go to Burger King they aren't serving you so you don't tip.

You don't tip the guy who gives you gas because it is something extremely simple to do. You don't tip the person at the toll booth because he doesn't give you anything, and you don't tip the president because that would be bribery;)

Italian food.. that reminds me of somethign funny

There was an expensive italian resturant near my college that got busted a coupelof weeks ago for drug charges. As I have been told, people could order drugs with their food!

I'm glad I have never been to that place!

Thos are good words to live by. I shall take heed

In New Jersey there is no self-service. I guess you haven't heard of the Garden State Parkway... it's like an interstate, but more fun to drive on because you get to go through toll plazas and meet people.

and you don't tip the president because that would be bribery

What? Clinton got "tips" all the time ;)

I can't beleive I forgot that I worked as a waiter during the summer in Europe. Being a waiter is not as easy as it looks, and the pay is really low (I was getting 20 Euros for 6 hours). Though the tips weren't as good as the ones waiters get here, they were still better than nothing, and every time I got a tip, no matter how small, I felt like I had satisfied someone. By giving waiters tips, it makes them feel good, and they know that they are doing their job correctly, and to keep on working.

Of course I remembered who tipped me, and made sure they got better treatment next time they got, so that I would get even more tips. :)

Well I can't think of many things simpler than carrying food and putting it on a table :)

What about ensuring that you are as happy as possible? What about keeping true the spirit of the restaurant?

Ok I will admit that I have had bad experiences at resturants. Rudeness, as I have described, has always been the top one of them. It totally ruins the night.

I guess you can't quantify the amount of happiness just like you can't quantify current flow from the positive terminal of the battery (imperialistic morons).

You will have a more dramatic impact by saying it bluntly that they were rude. If you are unhappy ask them what would they do if they were you?

If you're going to tell a waiter that they are rude, you should wait until after all your food has been served. That way, they can't do anything to it.

Sad but true. Point well taken.

Don't move to a big city then ew0054. 20% is normal. Anything less than 15% is a slap in the face.

This isnt necessarily true. Its probably true at more expensive restaurants, but at your local IHOP, 15% is just fine.

In the US, the waiter/waitress salary is BELOW minimum wage. It is designed for them to make a normal wage WITH tips. The federal gov't requires them to claim at least 10% of their sales as tips. Tipping more is nice and in some areas of the US 20% or more is standard. Not tipping in a nation where tips are part of the standard income as a general rule is immoral in my opinion.

There are some nations such as Germany where the tip is included, though rounding up is normal, or Japan where the wage is set so that tipping is not required, in fact tipping is considered rude.

So you just screw over those who are? I was a grandfather at 37. I was the breadwinner of the house at 18 yrs old as is my son-in-law who happens to still in high school due to going part time so he can work full time. I never did waiter because of jerks who didn't tip. Of course the same jerks paid $15+ per hour for advanced math and computer tutoring, so that's karma.

In switzerland I usually don't tip much, just round up to the next round number, since here service, by law, is already included in the price. If i get very good service, I tip more to show them my appreciation.

In the US, as tips/service are not included I usually pay 15% or more, I'd feel bad if I didn't. Of course, if the service was bad, I'd tip less/not at all.
