TIL that Hydras sleep.

Studies of sleep are usually neurological. But some of nature’s simplest animals suggest that sleep evolved for metabolic reasons, long before brains even existed.

That is really interesting. I shall have to give the paper a proper read, but it looks like it has features of higher animal sleep, like prediction of the change from light to dark and compensatory sleep.

You might also enjoy the podcast of an interview with Eve Marder on plasticity and neuronal resilience in animals that was released a few days before the article I linked to.
She explains the concept of central pattern generators very well, and also on how animals cope with temperature changes, among other things.

Sadly it's not known how he came up with the 1:2000 probability :)
Everyone knows that the probability of your enemy dying in any given year is 1 in 44.72136 :p

1/8 * 356.25 = 44.53125
44.5 ^ 2 = 1983.032

I am not yet sure how he got the number, but I think I may be on the right track.

Well, if an enemy lived for up to n years, he could die in either one of them, so 1/n for each year. But if you had two enemies, the chance of dying in the same year would be 1/n^2. Specific day isn't important, but maybe circles are? (360/8 = 45). Or this is less convoluted, and he just assumed that one can reasonably be an enemy for up to nearly 45 years :)
That said, it is Godel, he was worried that TPTB were trying to poison him, so it is highly likely this is more convoluted. I wonder if there is context in the letters to his mother (who wasn't a mathematician anyway). Maybe he just used the simplified version for his mother, instead of going on about the precise number of the alien.

(edit: he said :"within the course of half a year", so replace "an enemy for up to 45 years" with half of that :P )

TIL: How Kim Kardashian got her start. We can blame Paris Hilton.
“And … at the time Kim was Paris Hilton's closet organizer, they were best friends. And he started using [Kim] as a model for [his clothing company], Famous Stars and Straps.” She said that she asked her then-husband “not to use” Kim Kardashian as a model, given her ties to Hilton, .....”

This story is trashy gossip column stuff with lots of names you may not even recognize.

I wonder if we are allowed to say a computer is "sick" (as in something is not working right)? Would it be different if something is "sick" as in good?

Furthermore, my car is not calibrated, isn't calibration check offensive for it?

How long until we cannot disable a service?

Well, that is new to me.

I guess, policitical correctness has gone insane.

ba-dum tss!

I do wonder if anyone was actually upset by these computing terms. If they were, it is a relatively easy change to make to make people feel better.

"Sick" as positive, is pretty recent, I think. I doubt it was there in the 90s (?). But it is part of a known trend, and a subset of variations of it, to have the next generation use the opposite term for slang than the previous one did, eg "hot" became "cool".
Most such opposites do carry the potential to connote the same thing, although at times how you get there can be convoluted and tie to different orders. "Sick" may tie to "mad genius" etc, but if you wanted to replace "wicked" (provincial english slang) with (say) "gentle", you would have to tie to the connotation for "refined".

How long until we cannot disable a service?

A mate of mine was trying to persuade me that this was all written into his contract. A clause about not referring to master/ slave drives and another about sanity.

He didn't fool me.

There is no such thing as the sanity-clause.

I remember when South!Korean censors in GunBound implemented an automatic text-blocker with an index of ‘bad word sequences’ so the entire South America could not complain about problems with the computer because ‘computadora’ includes ‘puta’ (slut/whore).
