Torture

So you are just fine chucking out standards of evidence so long as someone points a finger and utters the killer accusation 'terrorist'?

What do we care about a bunch of sub humans anyway? After all as long as they aren't white and follow the Islamic faith torture is A-Okay!

Go back to your homes, everything is fine. The government is your friend and always tells the truth

NO...not at all. I only hope the standards of evidence are maintained in the highest quality. But I know that most all of the 400 occupants of at least Gitmo are high on the list of organizers of militant operations (primarily in Afghanistan) and hopefully will be recognized as such. I think a great fear is embedded in the military establishment that the evidence is very difficult to establish and preserve when conduction a heated battle.

I do realize that soon these 400+- detainees will need to be examined in the judicial halls.

oh come on, some of these people have already been released without even the suggestion of a charge, if there is no evidence to support a charge why the hell are they being detained for years? You seriously don't think that stinks?

I guess it stinks if you are right and these former detainees were simply picked from random off the streets of Kabul or Tikrit. I don't think it is too awful if I am right and these people were wearing civilian clothing while commanding 200 insurgents firing upon soldiers whilst also knowing the whereabouts of other masterminds of the insurgency.

I suppose the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Has anyone ever presented any documented proof that they were tortured? Besides the pansies who say they were forced to take naked pictures or listen to loud music. Just curious.
Has anyone ever presented any documented proof that they are guilty of a crime?

Or has that assumption just been made, because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, or a bounty hunter said so?

@Trajam12: waterboarding is torture, and US troops and administration admitted having used waterboarding. Oops!

Gotta go with Trajan on this one. I'll believe my government over anyone who was bad enough to warrant a trip to Gitmo to begin with.

@ParkCungHee Good Quote :D

Also, would anybody mind telling me what waterboarding is, because it sounds similar to waterskiing from its name.

From Wikipedia
Waterboarding is a form of torture, which is used to obtain information, coerce confessions, and for punishment and intimidation. Waterboarding consists of immobilizing an individual and pouring water over his face to simulate drowning, which produces a severe gag reflex, making the subject believe his death is imminent while ideally not causing permanent physical damage.
This is the kind of stuff that Pol Pot used to torture his victims. If it recieves the Pol Pot seal of approval, that means its torture.

I still remember in another thread some people said waterboarding was not torture and they would do it.

The Americans do everything saddam did. They even take it a step further, steeling oil from poor Iraqies.

We obviously didnt do everything if we didnt mass murder/execute hundreds of kurds.

Absolutely not. Not even close. Saddam performed far greater atrocities than the US, and with far worse intentions.

LOL I'm all for standing up to my friendly neighbors to the South (Americans) when they do something wrong, but I absolutely hate it when people make up exagerated, insubstantial claims. I'm sure that in the Iraq war, the Americans have made many mistakes and done many bad things, but comparing them to the things done by Saddam Hussein is just rediculous.

I can let your spelling and grammer slide, but this statement is just ridiculous. Rather than point out that the US hasn't stolen a drop of oil (we pay market price for it just as you do) and Saddam intentionally killed civilians, I will just mark it up as a 15 year old that has a bit of growing up to do.

Take a little trip to Kuwait City and visit the Museum from the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. You can usually find a Kuwaiti that will reluctantly tell you about the experience of Saddam's invasion. It was truely horrific (death squads, rape rooms, etc.). To even suggest the US troops and Saddam's troops are remotely similar is disgusting.

My experiences in Bosnia let me understand the significant differences between a military that is generally good vs. one that is horrific. If many don't understand this difference then Western style democracies will perish.
