had a feeling for running some Civ IV here in the holidays and rolled this map with my usual setups (Fractal, Emperor, Epic, NoBarbs), and landed my self with a fairly tough map, and failed spectacually, eventhough i usually win slightly over half my Emperor maps

Spoiler start and settings :

Looks like a solid start... I am not comfortable on epic speed, but I may give it a go, but not any sooner than monday.

I'd settle on the phants 1s. that way you get a 2 hammer cap as well as the corn.

Seems alright so far.

I ended up settling 1E of those pigs. Then I noticed huts were on, and went silly. Gold, XP (woods2 pseudo-scout), and writing on turn 20. I really like that the Ottomans can immediately start researching pottery.

The neighbors aren't very nice, but they're manageable.

I will give this a shot. Been playing too many nooble/prince 1 city games lately. Need to play one at my default difficulty.

Depending what the warrior reveals, probably settle 1s on the phants.

Played til 155BC, Surprised I'm still alive and in this game actually.

Spoiler :

Settled 1S on phants.

Tech order. Hunting(popped hut turn 4 and got it)>AH>min>BW>myst>pottery>writing>math>mason>construction. Currently teching Currency to try and right the economy. Im +12 @0 slider.

Meet Shaka-Toku and Alex all by 3350BC.

Settled Erdine and Ankara and Bursa to block Shaka.

Though about rushing him but just seemed to late. I then sat back and waited for the DOW. I built spears and axes and fortifies border cities.

975BC Shaka declares and I lose 1 unit total while he just suicided on me.

750BC GS pops I settle for the research. I'm dragging at this point.

625BC I take peace Shaka.

305BC Shaka redeclares. Also GS pops. I think long on this and decide to bulb Alpha. Not optimal but I was @10% breasking even and long way away from math here. My goal here was Beeline to get WE and cats to take on Shaka.

275BC Trade aplha and math to alex for HBR and IW.

155BC I stopped here construction is in. Time to build up units for Shaka. I am still at war with Shaka.

Only problem I see here is Alex. I only have 5 cities. Have settler for 6th waiting til I got construction. He is in place to saettle north of capital. I have room for 8-9 cities peacefully I think. But war is inevitable here.

If anyone could guve advice it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

I will play this game a bit once Hannibal is out of the way. I do tend to shadow Mikes games. ;)

Are barbarians turned off?

EDIT: Nevermind. I see that they are.

Good Gravy. Playing Epic speed, I usually play normal. Well, had to learn sometime.

Well I lied, apparently I don't play the same version of the game that you do.

Hmmm. Definitely haven't been playing Emporer. Too much military, 4 cities, wrong research path = crashed economy. Turned the barbs back on in my game, but missed the GWall and it's turning into a mess. Huge map...bleh. Won't bother finishing, but it was good practice and I know what I did wrong.

Combination mistake of (a) researching writing before pottery and..

Spoiler :
(b) settling 3rd city on a copper rather than waiting an extra 10 turns for my capital border pop to get the copper close to the capital. Took out Shaka by 1400BC but the large military helped kill my economy. Doesn't help that Toku has an insane 2 gold capital. But if I had taken pottery before writing, then masonary, then GWall, I would be in a good position to win by taking the continent.

Thanks for posting the game.

edit: moved spoiler content all in spoiler tags. oops.

Spoiler :

Shaka wasn't worth killing my economy early, so I grabbed the nice cities, then abused him with axes. And I got a greed quest on his horses, and because my efforts were rewarded with 6 unupgraded chariots.

Oh yeah, I gifted a crappy city to shaka and tokugawa early.

Is it hard? I took out 3 cities in the first two turns of war, then killed his stack while it attacked one of my cities. I imagine I would have stalled before I could take Shaka's capital at higher levels. I think if I stayed with my pre-war cities, I could just do the popular strategy of turtling until liberalism.

No screenshots for now, but tech situation is good, except for tokugawa somehow having bureaucracy already. Sued shaka for peace a little early, but got iron working and horseback riding. Forgot I was ottomons and don't have mathematics yet.

Spoiler :
I'm just looking at the screenshots and it doesn't really seem that bad. You only need to worry about attacks coming from 1 direction. And while the tech rate might be quite poor, the important thing is that where you relative to everyone else. Just settle border cities on some hills, make sure that you have a good army and you'll probably be alright.

Spoiler :
the place where i gave up was when i got told that someone researched Liberalism when i was still trying to get paper (being 'round average on my island)

Woah huge map size and no barbs??? Doesnt that up the difficulty to immortal level really? Might take a while to complete this. :)

Okay no barbs will make it a bit easier.

This got a bit silly.

Spoiler :

I expanded to 4th city. I then started churning out axes. Stealing Shaka worker did not make him happy. After many minor skirmishes and 3-4 of shaka outter cities destroyed he made a fatal error in sending 3of of his 6 archers from his capital towards his second left. I took out the second city and 3 archers. Then with my 2 axe cr3 great generals and 5-6 units I took his capital. I am thinking i have enough units left to try and find Toku who now has 5 cities. Minor issue is where is the economy going to come from. Hmmm.

Played on, I'll spoiler just in case people are playing.

Spoiler :

I played til about 1300AD. Lost Lib race by 4 turns. Which didn't bother me all that much. But when I met other conitnent, it was different story. Cathy had vassaled 2 people and had 20 cities herself. While I only had 12. Me and shaka been at war back and forth. Economy is in tank as our lands aren't the greatest. Was planning on taking coninent with Jan's but I'm so far behind Superpower Cathy it's going to be to tough. Vikky is even pulling ahead here also. I decided it was a loss from here. Cathy is in WHEEOHRN also and I am .1 of her power. .3 of Alex on my continent who has Toku as vassal. Good luck to others trying. I'm sure better players then I can win this.

Spoiler :
That is the problem with huge maps. The Ai expand too much and become stupidly over powered. Its also one of the reasons people dont play low sea level. Not sure I would have the time to complete such a huge map really.

With Shaka destroyed Toku would only just fill the empty void.
