So take the strategic genius of Machiavelli (he did military planning too). Also, Napoleon had lots of opposition, he just had enemies that screwed up more times than he did for a long time. That's not to detract from the man's skills, of course, he was the father of modern artillery and the person who made the foundation of WWII blitzkrieg. My original point was that Italy has historically produced more great generals than France, or at least that's the way it's remembered.
