Ugliest city in the world?

If you walked to work, then you didn't get to see very much of the city. I live in St. Louis, but I've been to Kansas City quite often. The only abandoned parts I've ever seen were the ones marked as a historical site (abunch of old warehouses by the looks of them to.)

I lived there for almost 2 months. I hooked up with a couple of friends of which one had a car, and the only places I was able to find of any interest was Westport, the Plaza, and some movie theater in a strip mall in Kansas City, Kansas. (we snuck in to see two movies for the price of 1) What was I missing?

To my surprises, all I saw on my one day guided-tour with my school last spring, was lots of big, ugly blocks with windows and ugly colors. It seemed like they had built most of Athen first, and then found out that they wanted air condition. So they had one air-condition thing outside and under EVERY window in almost every building!

Akropolis looked nice though.

You obviously were nowhere near the historical areas. You have to go to the center of town, where you will find not only the acropolis and all of the associated spots at the base, but a wide swathe of neighborhoods featuring shops, outdoor restaurants, and nightlife, as well as a nice park with an original Roman arch.

Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gaudy, ugly casinos along the beach, about three blocks of awful slums right behind, the whole thing backed by smelly salt marsh. It could be a prime excursion site for a communist's propaganda tour on The Evils Of Capitalism.

Hamilton Ontario, its absolutely disgusting there, even Sarnia smelled better. The air is so thick with pollution (much like Toronto) I could barely stay around. Smokestacks everywhere, its a terrible place.

Worst of all though was anything in Shanxi in China

Sudbury, Ontario. Pontypridd in Wales is also an extremely depressing place (although it must have been ten times as bad when my great-grandfather lived there). I hear Istanbul is filled with ugly sandstone buildings that have all been standing uncompleted for thirty years because their builders ran out of funds.

wow how could I forget these 2. If I could use a tactical nuke to wipe out a city but have no effects on the surrounding area, hamilton would be my first choice. Sudbury is just dirty....YUUUCK.

Well, I've seen a lot of ugly cities across the miles I've traveled--then, I've not traveled much outside of the country ( ) yet, but I'd have to say it's... hmm... I can't quite remember the name *exactly*, but I believe it is called something like Atlantic Mine (ironically only about 50 miles from the city I think has the most beautiful view). It's essentially a few shacks, an abandoned mineshaft with rusted equipment, and minerock and stampsand littering the area around it.

It's not just an industrial wasteland--it's about as horrible a thing you can do to a landscape. Obliterating the city would be a kindness...

Come on, it's not that bad! I've been to Prague, and while it was very medieval and overpopulated with tourists, it was still a lot of fun.

Ironically, I've been to Bratislava and didn't find it as bad. If you go to the old center of the city, by the Danube, it's actually quite pleasant.

I've been to Bratislava too, and I didn,t find it ugly at all. Yeah, there are a lot of communist buildings, but as you say, the old part of the city is nice.

The castle at Bratislava looks nice from a distance, lit up and night. But actually go to it and look at the walls of the old town. Theyre in some dissaray, many of them dubbed with Nazi graffiti amongst other things.

Birmingham, england. Been there once, and there was absolutely nothing that i thought "wow, that looks good" there. The most noteworthy thing the the spagetti junction outside of it, which is a system of roads. thats the highlight of the 2nd largest city in england...

Birmingham has more canals than Venice apparently, so it rocks. Their science museum is a rather impressive buidling. Can't say I ventured any further into Birmingham apart from picking up a hard-disk about 14 months back...


Apparently this is a close call between Paris and Birmingham...yeah, I don't believe it either

And let's not forget Campos dos Goytacazes, in the northeast of the Rio de Janeiro state. That city sucks so much I want the city of Rio to secede from the rest of the state. Campos is a huge slum and also home of the evangelical political mafia. That city should be nuked.

Nuke Campos and Rio economy will crash. Secede Rio from the rest of the state will have the same effect.

And the ugliest city in the world is Mexico City, i thougth that was a unaminity, São Paulo in second place off course.

They can keep their lousy oil...
The oil money goes to the State government anyway, which primarily invests outside the city of Rio. Furthermore Rio, the richest city in the state, subsidises crappy places such as Campos. That's right, even with oil money more money goes out from the city than into it.

And there is of course the bonus of getting rid of the Garotinho family once and for all. I stand by claim; Campos must be destroyed.
