Unit Previews: Pikemen

What's the difference between the two? Not to be mean or anything, but they look the same. Great, of course, :D
:hmm: look at the shadow, I haven't been getting much feedback so I think I'll just stop waiting and start rendering, I'm going to use the sharp shadows since no one seems to care either way and it cuts my rendering time by 90%

Thin shadow, most defiently.

Good thing I went with the sharp shadows since it took me 8 hours to render only 2000 frames  , woulda been DAYS if I went with the smooth shadows

anyway, both are completed and can be found here

Ok, time for another preview :)
This is a generic Halberdier, I based the model off goldflash's pics and added a halberd. This my most complex humanoid model I've ever made so the render times may rival the dwarf and viking halberds...combined :(

Comments and suggestions are ALWAYS welcome :)

 Try this one on for size: 2 hours just to render a single direction on a 10 frame attack animation (for my Tesla tank) and times that by 8 (16 hours for 80 frames @ 180x180 resolution :crazyeye: ) The YAT-97 had similiar render times (about 1.5 hours per direction)....And people wonder why it takes me so long to get my units done.

Love that Halberdier....

A good start! :)
It looks like he's a tad large compared to the original pikeman, I wonder how he would look if he was smaller?
Maybe it would be better if there were bigger contrasts between the colours? I fear it might be a little bland at civ size...

Thanks for ALL the feedback everyone :cooool:

Things I will change -
- make the stripes on his arm larger
- change the red thing on his head to blue
- fix the sword so it doesn't stab him when he runs

well, the only reason he looks larger is because of the stuff ontop of his helmet, same thing with the tupi guy :)

I may make the upper armor a bit lighter, as well as the strap, I'll have to see how it looks :)

yes, but OFX is a free program, it not supposed so complex it takes a day to render stuff  :)

It shouldn't be taking that long! Rendering a 24 frame run animation in OpenFX takes mere seconds for me, even with all the ray-tracing on.

... I hate to ask this ... but ... does your computer make toast as well? :crazyeye:

Hm, on second thought I think that the stripes should be larger and in the other direction. I e up and down, as that's more historically correct.
The other two changes sound good.

No it's just that..... Well, here's a few quick stats for the ol' attack A animation on the tesla tank (the twin beam attack): Total polygons: 22,088,
Number of animated radial lights (not including the main environmental lighting): 3, number of animated volumetric textured objects: 5 (volumetrical textures, which are used for particle FX in Bryce take up the most video memory and take the longest to render, btw).

Now here's a few stats for my comp: Sony VAIO notebook with a P III 1GHz processor, 384 MB of ram, 8 MB of video memory , 30GB hard drive, 2 USB ports, 2 PCMICA slots (one of which is occupied by a SCSI card), Firewire/DV input, Video output & headphone jack (so you can hook it up to a VCR or TV), high-speed ethernet card and 56K modem. I also happened to buy it 3 years ago this month, so it's quite obsolete.

Fortunately, my Ork Looted Russ is comparatively low-poly, and it has only taken about a minute or so to render all the animations thus far. :)

ok, that sounds good, although maybe a bit hard to do, but I'll try! :D

@rendering times - I'm going to start rendering tonight and I'll get back with some stats, just so ya'll can point and laugh  :D
