UNITS: Japanese Units Pack

Dom why did you make the japanese rileman so yellow??
my friend told me that westerners say asians are yellow, but we have white skin I think... I think giving him yellow skin makes him look sick.

I would tend to agree (most of the time) with that. Once I had a Shanghaiese gf (very pale skin) who just did not get why we (European-Caucasians) call them "yellow" since I was much darker than her :D

Actually I think it is because of the geographical approach the Europeans had (they came by boat from the South and met Khmer, Cantonese, Taiwanese or people from Okinawa before "the others" and these people tend to have more of a "copper" skin (the same difference more or less can be found between a "typical" Swede and a "typical" Southern Spaniard).
If you add to that the fact Europeans were definitely interested in finding a difference of skin to definitely identify and separate Asians from themselves, well you got the point.

I don't think the skin looks so much yellow as it is tanned. A simple explanation for that is that the Meiji army was comprised of peasants as opposed to the samurai. Thus, these were men who labored for long hours in the sun... The colors of the flesh of this unit are, in fact, comprised largely of flesh colors I've used in lots of units.

Update:

I've redone the shadows. They are a proper shade now. (You can actually see the horse's legs :)).

But I still have to do some in-game testing to get the alignments right... :( So I hope later tonight I'll release the fixed units.

Woo woo!! Merry Christmas, Don Pedro II! Looking forward to those new alignments!

This is a great set of units. If you were wondering what type of units to do next, I haven't seen any "less-honorable" types when it comes to Japanese units anywhere. Maybe more brutish Samurai-types utilizing die-tsuchi (war hammer), ono (battle axe), or Tetsubo (club). Or perhaps peasant warriors utilizing kama or other peasant-type weapons. A great source of inspiration (even if not all of it is strict japanese based) is the CCG Legend of the Five Rings. If you were to check that out, I think the ise-zumi (tattooed men) would be a great addition to civ3.

Maybe for chinese units something like the demon hunters from "A chinese Ghost Story". Also if anyone was looking to make Asian-themed fantasy units, possible asian-styled Dragons or different types of Oni.

I would like to make some Korean and Chinese units, but unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of materials to work with in regards to Korean soldiers (just one pic from a magazine), and I don't have most of the clothing for the models that would be needed.

Yeah, a surprisingly tough nut to crack -- here's one pic of soldier's uniforms from the Koguryo, Silla, and Baekjae Kingdoms (ca. 7th century CE):

Actually... hmm... actually, I MAY be able to come up with some units that look pretty similar to these... but, as I said before, I'm not doing anything at the moment...

In addition to a lot of work and the holidays, I've also been working on the movie and artwork for my mod.

Could anybody tell me anything about these hats and whether they might have been used by military?

If only we could convert Rise of Nations units...

Indeed, there are so very many "UUs" in RON -- do you know if our inability to do so is a matter of technology or law?
