Use of Chemical Weapons in Syria

Well, he's guilty of something (or the US surely thinks so).

How about cruel and inhumane treatment of Syrian citizens?

What will the US Govt be indicted for? Surely it does cruel and inhumane things.

So... there is a new diplomatic push by the Russians and accepted (in principle) by the Syrians to turn over the chemical weapon stockpiles.

Considering we have a law on the books that actually says we can invade to get American personnel out of that court, I don't think we'll be taking advantage of that venue.

Really? I didn't know that.

So one more thing for the US to hang its head in shame about? (Not that I think that's likely to happen, though). It's a good thing their self-esteem started out at such a high point.

Honestly, how does the US so consistently present itself as occupying the moral high ground? It must take a strange kind of double-think that I thought peculiar to religious fundamentalists. Ah...hang on...

:D

It's always party time with the communist party :)

Btw, the Syrian opposition does not include the communists. They are tactically siding with Assad.

Not the case in Iraq - Saddam brutally persecuted the communists.

Probably why we gave him a free pass to persecute a few others.

Exactly -- but more than a few. Saddam was a CIA "client" and they used him against the USSR and Iran. Gulf War 1 was partly about getting forces in striking range of USSR should glaucoma glasnost not work and US had to project force.

You're stating the obvious here man.

Well, it's history. But knowing that it repeats itself, I can't understand why some people, for or against, don't see this as a US power play.

Well.

If we looking at it purely in terms of geopolitics, why didn't they do something about Lebanon? Years ago. I'd have said that would be a far easier target than Syria, and would have given them an easier time with Syria later, too.

Because few people care about history and even fewer care about world politics.

In any case, what would be wrong with a US power play? (Considering the US is doing nothing currently, I would not say it is one now. Even if the US did something I'm not sure I'd consider it a power play and what Obama wants to be is mainly symbolic rather than functional).

And here I thought it was Team America World Police.

I guess we can just ignore all the comments from prominent far-right Christian military leaders that this is a "holy war". Because nothing could be further from the truth.
