Vingrjoe's Revised Ships Thread

Hmmm.... Something I've always wanted but never asked for is a set of Generic looking made up ships so I didn't have to use real world units as generics. But whatever.

That is an excellent idea something to replace the destroyer, cruiser, battleship, carrier, and submarine from the originals would be fantastic.

IMHO there're already enough excellent specific ships out there that one could pick-and-choose and find something "generic" enough among them.

Best,

Oz

vingrjoe...here is a Civ Specific units_32.pcx and a sound for Attack1 that I put together for your Udaloy DDG unit that I am using. Thought I would upload them in case you or anyone wants them. I put the sound together so it accommodates the two missiles with timing rather than using the single cruise missile game sound which also does not have the initial missile blast off aspect in the sound.

included files:
UdaloyAttackA.wav (for attack1)
Udaloy_units_32.pcx file (Civ Specific Colored)

here is the zip:

I've been playing Russia recently and strangely, Voldacon posted the sounds roughly half an hour after I got the technology to built DDGs, took a break and went to the forums. Intelligence seems to work fine ;-)

I wonder how the overhaul of the other BBs is progressing. Vingrjoe?

Snnzzzz...snort..*blink*...what...oh, hey. Uh, I've been on a break from my units lately. I've been putting some time in on playing TCW and also been playing Guild Wars. I have the Tico' CG half way done. Then I was going to redo the Slava. I have been working on making a new hull for the South Dakota, I was able to get a hold of the hull lines and stations for her. The South Dakota and North Carolina will probably be the last of my ships I will redo, and then I may start on new ships again. My daughter is due anyday, so I do not know how much time I will have after she is born, because that will put me at two kids. Besides, my interest for Civ3 comes and goes, although my interest for CivIV came and went, and hasn't returned.

Vuldacon, thank you for your improvements. Your work is appreciated. That's one thing I don't always do, nor like to do that much, is the sounds.

...you are quite welcome Vingrjoe and I understand about not wanting to mess with sounds. Really, I much prefer to make more units myself but nice units deserve sounds that add to their enjoyment in the game. ...and by the way, the Russians thank you Greatly for the Udaloy DDG. (me too) :D
...Great Updates for your Ships :goodjob:
Congratulations in advance on the new member of your family. After raising 4 sons, I know it will at least "keep you off the streets"

Great to hear I think that will make a very good generic BB replacement.
Also congrats on the upcoming baby!

Hi Vingrjoe

I wish you all the best for your new baby. I have a 3 ½ years old daughter (and looking for a second…) and can really understand your current position ;) .

As a humble “user” of your wonderful units, I could only suggest you not to be too focused in refining existing units. As said, they are wonderful as they are now so you can eventually use your time (if one) for new projects.
There is a lot of WW2 era ships around, and many more will come with SOE5. On the contrary, there are not many modern cold war era units. Even worst, some of the best units we have cannot be fully exploited because of lack of their natural complements. For instance, it is a shame to be forced to build a scenario with a wonderful Ticonderoga CG and a superb Modernized Iowa BB without a decent same era destroyer or frigate or with only few Soviet and Chinese contemporary units.

I do not want to press you in any way but the mod community is now just few units away from having a quite complete and really usable set of cold war ships. I think this situation will not easily occur again with Civ IV, not in the next couple of years, if ever. So, if you managed to have some time and feel like doing more Civ III units, here are my suggestions, in priority order (I had in mind many more but…) :

1) Spruance class DD (same Hull as Ticondergoga CG)
2) and 3) Burke DDG – Perry FFG. These ships could be very useful to model many modern navies. As a matter of fact, Japan has 4 modified Burke and Australia recently decided to build 3-4. Many countries have OH Perry : Australia, Spain, Taiwan (modified). Turkey, Poland, Egypt and Bahrain use ex-US navy ships.
4) Knox FF. Extensively used by US Navy and many other countries (Egypt, Greece Mexico,Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey)
5) Sovremenny DDG (Soviet Union), today used also by China
6) Luda DD (China), Backbone of PLA Navy during Cold War era

Thanks for your patience

Cheers

Vingrjoe, These Updates are for your Iowa Class Battleship Modern and I hope they meet with your approval. This unit is in my Game and I think it is Superb!

wolf_66 I certainly appreciate your point concerning desirable units to either fill in or complete a line of units for the game. That said, I think I can speak for most animators that strive for the Best work and are driven to perfect their work with updates after so much time and effort was spent creating the units in the first place. Vingrjoe has done an excellent job on his units and has always shown that he strives to perfect his work to Top Quality, so of course he wants to apply any great improvements he has learned how to do even better to his existing units. Even though the original units are very Good, his improvements do perfect them and make them better in the game. Anyway, Vingrjoe may need a well deserved break but perhaps he will consider some of your requests when possible.

Vingrjoe, I removed the 1st frame from the Default Flc and the 1st three frames from the Run Flc and Fidget Flc in order to eliminate the Hesitation of the turning Radar and the Run Flc Wake water. This does not change any of your Hard Work and does perfect those areas in the Flcs to loop smoothly. The Default and Fidget Flc speeds were changed to compensate for the changed number of frames and each of these changed Flcs have starting frames that smoothly go with the other Flcs.

I made a new Civ Specific Iowa_units_32.pcx...a little improvement but the Large ships are difficult due to the needed positioning.

Sounds:
IowaAttackAC.wav
IowaAttackB.wav
IowaFidget.wav
IowaDeath.wav

Adjusted .ini Note that the Other Flcs will need to be named according to the New .ini.

All Game Tested and work well.

Vingrjoe, Thank You again for this Fine Unit and all your Hard Work.

Wolf 66, You have been probing my brain ! That's it, I'm going to start wearing an aluminum hat on my head, I don't care what the wife says. I told her people were stealing my thoughts. Seriously, some of those units are on my "to do" list. If I can ever get started on it again. My latest WIP, that I left off on before deciding to go through my units is a Kresta I/II missile cruiser. The model is over 50% done. Thank you for the kind words. I hope I can find the time and ambition to get back to work on things, and not let people down.

I'll have to check out those edited flics, Vuldacon. I think I have the radar rotation loop fixed in some of the other newer ships, but it doesn't hurt to check them out. Again Vuldacon, thanks for your work and for helping out.

Vingerjoe...The changes I made were to the Iowa Class Battleship version 1.5 posted page one, 12/5 on this thread. The main cause for the hesitations was duplicate frames. Since I was placing sounds for the unit, which requires close observation of each frame, I saw the hesitations and corrected them. Simple corrections I made for my own use but knowing that you are busy with other things, I took the liberty of adding those corrections in with the sounds and .ini for your edification.
...Do check them out and I hope I have not "over stepped" my bounds. :)

For the most part I like what you did with the flics. Regarding the sounds, the AttackB and the AttackC, well, the gunblast is lacking punch. On the Modern and WWII Iowas, I did compose custom sounds for the gun attacks. I took two or three gunblasts and spaced them very closely together and added echo effect. Listen to my original AttackB and your AttackB. Mine sounds somewhat more thunderous. Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking your work or effort. Maybe try using my sound file, and adjust the timing as you are with the other files, unless you already did use my sound file, in which case my advice is moot.

The Modern Iowa version 1.5a is now out. The only changes are the Default, Fidget, and Run Flics in which Vuldacon corrected the lag in the rotation of the radar dish. Page 01, post #2 of this thread. Thanks again Vuldacon. :goodjob:
