Vingrjoe's Revised Ships Thread

Update 11-18-2007

A recent request for a unit I made, brought to my attention that the previous format I used in this thread made it burdensome to find my units for download. So I now have listed all my unit download links on the first page of this thread. I will continue to update page one, as I go through and edit these units. Just click on the unit's name to download the files.

Wow, Vingrjoe, the new layout looks excellent and is much easier to use. Thanks for that (and the awesome ships!)!

11-21-07 Update

The Des Moines CA has been cleaned up and the new file uploaded.

vingrjoe... You are one Dedicated Dude! You are perfecting even the most minor things such as little shadow "jumps" that most people cannot see.
...I am sure after all the Hard work you have put into your Great Ships, you want them as Perfect as you can get them...so I both understand and applaud your Serious Dedication to Excellence. :goodjob:

I assume you render with the Water Color Background and also apply shadows separately? Do you use Anti-Aliasing?

Thank you for the gracious words Vuldacon.

What I do is render the animation in layers. For example, the multiple layers for an AttackA animation would consist of:

-Hull with shadows on the water plane-no civ color, AA is on
-Topside (superstructure) layer with no AA against background, civ color is only in the Topside layer to prevent civ color anywhere else on the ship.
-Topside mask, alpha white and black mask
-Radars, no civ color, AA on
-Radar Mask, alpha white and black
-Effects (gunblast, explosions, etc) no Civ color, no shadow colors, AA on
-Effects mask, alpha white and black

I then combine the layers and merge them. I then apply the final palette.

After this, I check for holes in the animation. IOW, any transparent colors that shouldn't be in or on the ship.

I run it through Flicster to make the animation. I then open the new FLC and then export it to 8 seperate FLCs. I go through each FLC (directions E, N, W, etc) and then look for any blinking pixels, especially on the edge of the ship. They show up the most on the edge of the hull because the hull is anti-aliased with the water plane. I correct every offending pixel I see. Once all eight directional FLCs are inspected and corrected, I open up the INI file in Flicster, and make the final version. It is one very long process.

Yes, it is generally necessary to do post editing work with a good Graphics Editing program to improve animations to a higher level.

The procedures you use to get better end results at least are one way where you can gain more control over your work. Time consuming but pays off with Excellent End Results.
Because Anti-Aliasing does cause all sorts of "Shadow Glitches" and you have eliminated them from your Ships, I thought you were using "procedures" such as you are doing to gain the Better Results.

There are no shadows and smoke shades around Original Game Units and I have often thought that there must be some Special Programs that were used in combination with layers to gain the results. Separate Unit and Shadows anyway.
...we can get the same results if wanted enough but it, as you know, will generally be a much more lengthy group of procedures to gain it needing to use Anti-Aliasing.
Dark Maps and Water tend to show the shadow/smoke shades around units from Anti-Aliasing more than just land units against normal or light maps.

Your Ships are Superb vingrjoe and Magnificent to use in Games.

Is their still progress one these units?

Redback, I am working on another ship for El Justo's TCW at the moment, the French AA cruiser De Grasse. I just picked up on it after almost two months of a modelling break.

I don't have too much time on my hands these days, so any work to do on these ships will come slowly. I've been preoccupied with real life and I have been using my comp time to play other video games lately.

If you look in my first post of this thread, you will see the ship list. Any ships without the asterik symbol have been redone. The ships with the asterik symbol are still on my to do list. All I can say is patience please.

Wauw! I googled the ship....nice one. I also found out that u made a Sovietsky Soyuz class battleship in the past. But where did u put it? Can't find it :(

Thanks for bringing that one to mind. I'll have to put that on the "to do" list as well.

EDIT: I added a link to the Sovietsky Soyuz on page one, post one. Wow, the darn thing is over three years old.

When I finish my Fuso, would you care to take it and do something with it?

I'll take a look at it when you're done and see what I can do with it.

jatibi, I checked out the site and liked it. I'll check it out in detail later. There is ont thing I found at first glance that is in eror about Napolionic 3rd rate ships-of-the-line. Most, if not all, 80 gunned vessals were 3 deckers and the website states that all 3rd rate vessals are 2 deckers. However, most 3rd rate 64 or 74 gunned warships were 2 deckers and they made up the bulk of the 3rd rate ships in the fleets of the time so it is an easy mistake to make. But that didn't stop me from saving it in my favorates. thanks for the website.

Please do not hyjack my threads.

jatibi, I know you were just trying to be friendly, but posting links like that in a thread, just causes people to make posts unrelated to the subject matter of my thread.

Ambrosia, you could have PM'd him what you posted instead of spamming my thread with it. Please do think ahead next time before you post. Thanks.

Please forgive me vingrjoe, no offence was intended. And for how long it took me to reply to your post, broke the 1915 snowfall record so I get little or no sleep (Hm no sleep, reminds me of some of my deployments as a ranger).

I didn't know I could PM but as soon as I saw your post I went looking for info no how to do just that. I found the info that I was looking for in the FAQ section. It states that there is suposed to be a selection in the post that I wish to reply on. It also stated that a moderator needs to activate this function so I can use it. But when I looked to see how to contactc a moderator I couldn't find out how. I know I have to be missing somthing but I don't see what. I want to get this resolved so any help would be appreciated. I wil hold off on any PM appropriate responses until then.

thanks
