i think the reason that a lot of people are talking about VTech is that when you go to school, you expect to be safe...in Darfur or Iraq, it's troubled and people are less shocked by those deaths

Deaths are deaths, murder is murder, wherever you are. I agree that it is a shock to hear about something like that on American soil, but to say, as CivGeneral did, that you do not care about non-American deaths/murders is shocking, IMO.

EDIT: Here's an interesting fact. The CFC Newsfeed front page has 45 topics, 20 of which are about the VT killings. That's almost half. :dubious:

^^ i don't mean that i just care about VTech - killing anywhere is horrilbe, obviously. But people in a war zone live constantly with death, but when you go to school, its supposed to be a safe environment. that's why that hostage taking at a school in Russia (a year/two years?) agowas shocking. It was little kids and their parentls, expecting to have a nice day back at school

Regarding putting numbers into perspective - even if we restrict ourselves to gun deaths in the USA, with a rate of over 10,000 per year (IIRC), surely this means that about 30 are murdered from guns every single day?

Of course, it stands out that it all happens in one place. But I mean - consider the London 2005 bombings, and then imagine if 50 dying from terrorism a day was normal in the UK.

It isnt THAT shocking considering the vanity and self obsession of America and Americans. If this had even happened in Mexico, Americans wouldnt give a ****. If this happened in Canada, maybe, but only if it was in the anglo sections.

What changed your attitude all of a sudden? After 9/11 the world was sympathetic and compassionate to the United States. Now they dont even care what happens to our own people.

i NEVER liked america. plain and simple. funny but you coudnt give a s**t about people in darfur but you expect me to sympthise with the americans? yeah right.

I don't think it's strange that people are more likely to care about and discuss things relevant to their own countries. Note also that the large number of posts on it is down to the gun control debate (and possibly other issues, like what in our society causes people to do this).

I think it's rather odd to suggest that someone is "self-obsessed" because they are interested in issues regarding their country that affect them, but not as much as with other countries. I mean, would you seriously expect America to change its laws based on an event in Mexico?

it is when people claim to have universal value for life and then only care about life in america.

Which posters said this?

I don't think that has anything to do with the number of forum posts on the topic.

Dafur is different. That conflict does not involve the massacre of inocent American Civilian lives.

I care and give compassion for the people in Virginia because they are part of the wide college/university community. Whereas in Darfur are neather Americans nor are they part of the American College/University community. To be frank, I dont care about thoes whom are in Darfur.

But to be fair, mrt144, it isn't just coming from America:

to be frank, those americans deaths ment NOTHING to me. just like those who died in darfur mean NOTHING to you.

Go ahead and do that. There's no need, though, to start fussing about "OMG LOOK I HAEV TEH RIBBON THEREFORE EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE INTO A BETETR DIRECTION". Action instead of avatars ;)

But did CivGeneral also claim to have a "universal value for life"?

There's nothing strange about caring more for people in the same country or community as you.

Ah, I see what you mean. No, he did not, but the Catholic Church probably does.

I can understand someone caring more for people in their own country, for example: they are more like that person, and of course it means that they are reminded of bad things happening where they are. It could be them next! :scared: But what I can't understand is saying that you do not care about people who are not your fellow countrymen and women.

Perhaps it was just a slip of the "tongue" (typin' fingers). :)

Actualy, I do .

And I'm not going further in this argument since nether of us will convince the other .
